I'm brand new to linux and am still getting my head around the command-line style interface (thought my DOS days were over, heh.)

I've got boinc up and running, however I don't see any options for adding boinc to the list of screensaver options, nor does anything happen when I click the "show graphics" icon from the boinc manager.

Any suggestions?

The screensaver does not yet work in Linux. You can view the graphics, if the application has graphics, with the "Show Graphics" button in the Manager. But no screensaver yet. Sorry.

Can you give us a link to one of the errored results. It's hard to determine what's going on without that information.

Well, I'm not sure what you mean by a link, but I'll give you what info I have:

edit: OOPS, mystery deepens. It runs ABC@Home just fine. OK, so it only relayes to QMC?

Go to your account at the project with problems, computers under this account, the computer in question with the problem, tasks, copy the link to one of the tasks with the problem and post it here.

Yes it does, although I must say I have never seen the error 127 before. ;-)
The BOINC version that you are using, did you download and install it from Berkeley or through your package manager? If from Berkeley, could you please install the recommended version 6.2.15 (from here).

I'm running 6.2.1.2, and I honestly cannot remember where I got it. I've d/l'ed 6.2.1.5, and will install it.

edit: Oh wait. I've got an even dumber question. Now that I've downloaded the 6.2.15 version, I can't figure out how to install it. I admit I've been corrupted by Windoze, but dang! This should be simple. Please help a PC!

4 digits on the version number... must be installed from the package manager. Berkeley releases always have 3 digits.

There's one user on the QMC forums reporting issues with Ubuntu.

My suggestion is to post over there. If you don't hear from Martin or one of the other admins in a few days, I'll drop them an email.

I don't understand. I don't crunch QMC. I don't even read their forums. Do you mean you've gone to the QMC forums and have discovered other Linux users are having troubles, that there is a fix but you don't know how to do the fix? In that case you'll have to help me out a little by providing a link to the QMC forum where the problem and the fix is discussed. Sorry, I don't have time to hunt around for it.

There is a fix, but the cause is unknown, and the "fix" is a workaround that uses techniques that are far too advanced for my meager Unix skills.

Or do you mean there is a problem with QMC's system? If that is the case then just set QMC to No New Tasks and wait for them to fix their problem.

The 4 digits is a typo. His task details, for example this one show the version as 6.2.12. Ubuntu repos could be sending version 6.2.12 though.

Also, and I should have noticed this earlier, his task details show

Amolqc-preRC1-501: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So, CycloneRanger, that's your problem, you're missing a shared library named libstdc++.so.5 or else it's in a directory that's not on the search path.

A shared library is like a DLL in Windows.

Why are you missing it? Well, the standard answer is that you've never asked Ubuntu's package manager to install anything that needs that library. If you had then Ubuntu would have installed it for you. However, so many applications need that library, I am surprised you don't have it already. In fact, I rather suspect you do have it and the QMC app is falsely reporting that it's missing. So let's do another check to see if you have it or not and then decide what to do from there. Open a terminal and enter the following command:

 whereis libstdc++.so.5

Then post here and include the response from that command in your post, please.

libstdc++.so: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6

cp /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 will make the copy.

I think that should be

cp /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5

(if I recall correctly) since the .6 version is the source.
