I have just downloaded and executed boinc_5.10.28_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh .

There is no boinc manager in the BOINC directory. Contents (after executing the boinc client once) are:
all_projects_list.xml binstall.sh boinc boinc_cmd
ca-bundle.crt client_state_prev.xml client_state.xml gui_rpc_auth.cfg
lockfile run_client time_stats_log

Running SuSE 10.3 (as a VMware virtual machine under Windows XP) on an Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor.

Any ideas?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I bet you got the version without the manager.

Due to a policy change, there are two releases. The one that appears on http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php is the one that is a CLI only package.

Try http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php and grab the ubuntu one. I'm not sure how it will work on Suse, but it does work on Fedora 7.

Thanks, you are correct. The main download page offers only the cli version without mentioning that! I followed the instructions in the release notes wiki page which do not mention a cli-only version.

The ubuntu download works as far as the "Connect to a project" dialog. I won't be checking the client any further as I only want the manager on this virtual machine. I do get the message:
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "gnomebreakpad": libgnomebreakpad.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
but this does not stop the programs starting up.

I've sent a note to David and Rom about this. I've also tagged the Release Notes page for editing so hopefully someone will take a shot at updating that.

Hi,
for OpenSuse 64bit you can find the downloads here:
http://www.rechenaugust.de/boinc/index.html

For the case that you are running 32bit OpenSuse, i have added the 5.10.32 version as 32bit. I couldn't test this, so please test for yourself...

Why Berkeley is now only supporting Ubuntu I don't know... what was wrong with the old method of building a distribution-agnostic version?

I hope they go back to that.

Basically it boils down to time. Now that Rom is handling both Windows and Linux builds as well as coding, something had to give.

The reason for the policy change is that
it's proven difficult/impossible to make
a graphical version that will run on the majority
of recent linux distributions.
Rom has spent a lot of time on it,
at the expense of more important tasks.

We're maintaining a graphical version for Ubuntu
because it's the most widely used distribution.
Package maintainers for other distros are welcome
to maintain distro-specific versions of BOINC.

Augustine has been building platform-agnostic versions recently, perhaps he could be persuaded to volunteer to do it officially?

I wanted to point an openSUSE user towards 5.10.21, but the FTP site doesn't have any more recent versions than 5.10.19, is this no longer being maintained?

Just to let you know that 5.10.21 resolved his problem (being unable to run under openSUSE 10.3 64-bit).
