As I do not. If you do, please tell me and why, perhaps you can change my mind.

Until that time: Brrrr, David really doesn't have artistic feelings.

I kind of like it, it seems more professional & streamlined to me. When I make presentations on CPDN & BOINC, it always seemed a little goofy to have the old "jagged cartoon" BOINC logo ( example ). I think this new logo will fit in better with university & corporate logos on slides, presentations, websites, etc.

The logo looks like it's 50% [U|Ku|Xu|Edu]buntu's hand-holding logo and 50% a large processor's fan(s).

I think that the new logo is a bit on the stoic side, but I also thought that the old logo was a bit on the frivolic side. Of course, de gustibus non est disputandi.

I agree with Carl that the new logo is more professional, but I think that the community will want to continue with the more familiar logo. It's akin to using "tú" instead of "Usted" in Spanish.

Don't like either logo. IMO neither logo conveys anything that relates to distributed computing or its objectives. However, I'm artistically challenged so I couldn't offer up an alternative design.

I'm not loving it.

But I'm not a big fan of unannounced change (like my opinion would have mattered anyway).

I guess it will grow on me in time. It was a huge shock to log onto these forums the other morning and see that new logo. I thought I was in the wrong place for a second.

For those who want a different or more professional logo to use in their presentations look at the following:

I like it. There is a sort of flow in to the center, and I like that symbolism. It does look professional.

But if you don't like it, which of the others in the list do you like better (and why)?

I don't know that I don't like it. I just don't like it right now. It's more the sudden change I guess.

Like I said, I think it'll grow on me.

But out of all of them on that page, I do like the one we've got now the best.

I find the new logo much better and more professional, especially the orange and the dark blue combination.

At first sight I did not like the logo, but now I start loving it. :D

The old logo was just some kind of ink blot with the letters BOINC on it.

Now you can interprete those blue arms as seperated things (e.g. computers), which unify into one whole thing (i.e. the orange circle). That's exactly, what BOINC is! :)

I think the new BOINC logo is pretty decent and does convey a more professional as Eric Myers stated. But that is my opinion and comes from a guy that sometimes finds himself wearing unmatched socks...

:-) I understand that the blue and gold colors used in the logo are the UC Berkeley school colors.

coincidentally it seems to be Oxford's colors too! http://www.ox.ac.uk/
as well as the U of Washington: http://gohuskies.cstv.com/trads/020398aab.html
so it represents some boinc projects at least! :-)

I'm glad Berkeley eventually chose a logo from the competition entries. A couple of months ago I thought they'd forgotten about all the superb possibilities. Here's an active link:

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/logo.php

I did also really like Markus Beck's selection, but there could only be one winner. Thanks from me to all the contributors.

The London Olympic logo cost £400000 (yes, the zeros are correct). A comparison with the new boinc logo must be the ultimate proof that price and quality are not always positively correlated.

Does anyone know whether crunchers are allowed to use the logos that didn't win? Some of them would also look very good as boinc-buttons on members' websites.

I did get an answer from David on why he didn't make it a poll, but he chose the entry:

The last time I ran an informal poll,
there were N logos and each one received 1/N of the votes.
So I had to make an executive decision.

The new graphical identity is not just the web site logo.
It's also a set of icons (16x16 up to 128x128),
a black-background version for the screensaver, etc.
The artist (Michal) produced all of these, and they all look good.
None of the other logos have associated icons.

Also, the logo is more professional-looking than the old one,
important for getting companies to use BOINC.

Well, I am in the "middle of the road" feelings about the new BOINC image/icon. It does have a corporate look to it wiich I like, but, it is lacking something in the artistic area. I say, we should have a contest on that image/icon for BOINC and vote on it. A mass mailing should go out to all the members of BOINC telling of the contest and the voting.

As I do not. If you do, please tell me and why, perhaps you can change my mind.

Until that time: Brrrr, David really doesn't have artistic feelings.

It's already been chosen by Dr Anderson and as he was the original founder of boinc, and so few people bothered to vote last time, I can't blame him for choosing himself this time.

Only the projects, not boinc, can send emails to their members. At least one project has a policy against sending mass emails.

But I think we can still use the logos that didn't win for non-official purposes. Does anyone know for sure?

OK really, this is an absurd thing to say. I can vouch that David & I & Tolu from CPDN went to the Salvador Dali Museum in St Petersburg Florida (when we were all at the SC06 conference); and David was appreciating the art long after I was just waiting in the gift shop! :-)

The favicon for this site needs to be updated too, it's still the old yellow and black B.

Told Rom about that, he'll be fixing it later on.
