I found bandwidth throttle settings at 0kbps for upload and download. I assume that's the default, and that it means no limits? 68.81.215.166 02:06, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, that's the default. Yes, it means no limits. But you're asking in the wrong place. This talk page is to comment on the main page, for example to suggest how to improve it, not to task for help. Use the forum for that. Nicolas (talk) 21:34, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
In this case, it was for both. I wanted to know for myself, but I thought that was very useful information to have in the (rather sparse) main page. Now that it's confirmed, I can go edit it in, so the next person isn't left wondering, too.68.81.215.166

Use at most CPU time

On a dualcore system, does the "use at most % CPU time" preference refer to CPU time on a single core? If I choose "use at most 50% of processors" and "use at most 100% of CPU time", will it only load one core? This could be more clearly defined on the help page. --88.113.9.13 06:14, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

defaults?

what are the defaults for all settings?

Format of the Day-of-week CPU usage pref. override

It would be worthwhile to describe the format of the Day-of-week override in the manual.

  • Is 00:00-12:00 a correct range?
  • Does it accept AM/PM?
  • How to describe an empty range (if this is consistant with the Every day setting, 00:00-00:00 means no limitation for the chosen specific day)?

Thanks a lot! --Shlublu (talk) 16:55, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

This page should also discuss how to turn off specific days? I have been experimenting for years and can't seem to get the preferences to work correctly.

  • What should happen when a day is checked but nothing entered into the time field corresponding to that day.
  • What is the functionality if the time entered is 00:00-00:00? Does this turn the day off or is that the same as no restrictions?

Disk and Memory Usage

The relationship between the three disk usage parameters needs to be clearly described on this Wiki page.

This Wiki page suggests that you can pick any one of the three disk space parameters and everything will be taken care of: "You can limit the disk space used by BOINC in any of three ways: 1. Maximum disk space used by BOINC; 2. Maximum percentage of total space that can be used by BOINC; 3. Minimum disk space to keep free. The Default is 100.0 GB."

From my own reading it appears that you can 1) set a maximum amount of disk space that BOINC can use for itself and all of its projects -- subject to the limitation that 2) the disk space used does not exceed more than a given percentage of the available disk space -- subject to the further limitation that 3) a minimum amount of disk space is kept free.

The effect of a disk usage parameter value of zero should also be stated. On the SETI@Home Preferences page I can set "Disk: use at most ??? GB" to 0 (zero). Likewise, I can set "Disk: use at most ??? % of total" to 0 (zero). However, "Disk: leave free at least ??? GB (Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored)" cannot be set to 0 (zero). (So, the statement "Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored" is incorrect.) I assume that "Disk: use at most ??? GB" = 0 (zero) means no limit. Is this also true for "Disk: use at most ??? % of total" = 0 (zero)?

Finally, The BOINC FAQ Service (English) <http://tinyurl.com/25tff37> suggests that BOINC can distinguish between space on a partition/slice and space on the physical hard drive on which the partition is situated. It states that "the minimum disk space to keep free" is the space on the physical hard drive. If this description is accurate, then this Wiki page should also say so.

If a BOINC authority confirms my descriptions, I'll edit the Wiki page.
