As near as I can tell the main features used by the T4T web app exist in IE8+.

I think I might fiddle with it a little bit this weekend and see if I can work out the kinks. I suspect it is just some small tweak needed when referencing an element in the DOM.

Whatever is wrong doesn't appear to be fixed in the IE10 platform preview.
66) Message boards : Questions and problems : What's the point in rebooting after install? (Windows) (Message 41932)

Thanks for your reply Ageless.

Installing BOINC makes Windows limited user accounts.

Actually it does not on my computers (Windows 7 x64). BOINC installer did not create any user account (I use the command net user to list all users).

Windows requires this reboot, to finalize the making of the accounts.

AFAIK there is no need to reboot after creating a user account. Neither http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-user-account nor http://www.itechtalk.com/thread16618.html say anything about rebooting. When I create a new user by myself, Windows does not ask me to reboot.

The permission structure of the BOINC Data directory is such that it required its own set of groups to manage it. By default, the admin account installing BOINC is added to the boinc_admins group. In order for that change to take effect you would either need to logoff and then log back in, or reboot.

Overall it was less error prone to reboot as that was already built into the Windows Installer technology than to logoff/login.

There was a bug in the build system that was fixed in trunk. to build the manager, just cd into the clientgui directory and run make from there.

.38 disables all GPU detection when installed as a service. It appears that AMD and Nvidia are trying to push GPU processing into large scale grid systems. I figured it was safer to disable GPU detection for everybody than try to figure out that system/driver combination was working/not working this month.

We'll re-enable it after the big shake up is completed and we understand what the new way of doing things looks like.

As far as Windows 8 is concerned, any major tweak to BOINC will more than likely come after Beta 1 is released. This release of Windows 8 was primarily meant for those who are planning on rolling out Metro applications. I would expect quirky things to happen until they lock down the APIs for beta.

The compat builds use static linking, the others use dynamic linking.

Basically attempting to statically link the UI causes problems of its own. Each distro/window manager uses different widget libraries. If you compile wxWidgets so that it works with one something gets messed up for the other. Statically linking everything, including X, and you get something akin to Gtk 1.x visuals running on a Gtk 2.x/3.x system.

The latest situation, at least with FC15, appears to be related to OpenSSL going 1.0 somewhat recently, the build machine is still Ubuntu 10.04 LTS which uses OpenSSL 0.9.8.

Those messages are from the lower level libraries like x-windows or gnome. In order to get rid of those messages you'll more than likely need to build a custom BOINC Manager for your distro. That way BOINC Manager will be built using the versions of the libraries on your machine.

The Login screen uses the screensaver from the Default registry profile.

Just change the screensaver specified for the default user registry hive and it'll change which screensaver is used at the login screen after a reboot.

One manifestation of this issue appears to happen with machines that have both an Nvidia card and a ATI card. If this is your problem uninstall one of the cards.

Both vendors do not support running both at the same time and do not look like they are going to fix the issue anytime soon. ATI has been made aware of the issue.

I have created a test executable to try and help narrow down this crash, it can be found here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/aticrashtest.zip

When running this under the 'Command Processor' on Windows, you'll see the message 'CAL has CRASHED during initialization.' when the crash has been detected, otherwise you'll see 'CAL has been successfully initialized.' if things worked properly.

If you see the 'CAL has CRASHED during initialization.' message could you email me at 'rwalton @ ssl . berkeley . edu' so I can forward your email address to the guys at ATI.

I am curious which models of GPU are affected and that OS is being used. Feel free to email that or post it.

Thanks in advance.
