I believe the only project that supports GPUs right now is ATLAS@home.

Not according to their applications list: http://atlasathome.cern.ch/apps.php
You are correct. Don't know where I got the impression.
Best walk by http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php to see which projects do support ATI/AMD GPUs (this will also show in the Attach to Project wizard in BOINC Manager).
I did not make that clear. I was referring to the projects I was already running. But I will review that list anyway. Thx.

Does "CAL: ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 7700/" the zero in bold refer to the device # or the # of GPUs?

The device number according to the hardware group they belong to, ATI/AMD, Nvidia or Intel:
If you have multiple ATI/AMD GPUs, they number up from device 0 to whatever.
If you have one Nvidia and one ATI/AMD they both number device 0.
If you have one Nvidia, one ATI/AMD and one Intel GPU, all number device 0.
Great! Thx.

Thx, you two. I took that out of cc_config.xml. At least it is detecting my GPU now. I have waited 4 years to see that status. Previous to this I was running WXP and as you know, it requires specific Card/Driver/ADK combinations to make it work.

Checked the event log and found: No usable GPUs found
Installed the AMD 3.0 SDK for my AMD drivers using AMD-SDK-InstallManager-v1.4.87-1 [Required reboot]
Checked the event log and found: No usable GPUs found
Searched the web for a solution. Read many articles in the forums titled "No usable GPUs found".
I don't believe BOINC is installed as a service because I use BoincTasks to start/stop.
Ran the clinfo utility as instructed in the BOINC Faq to Determine OpenCL capability of GPU and CPU. Seems to see it fine.

When does the coproc_info.xml get generated? And is it used to determine the # of GPUs?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx.

5) Message boards : GPUs : Can I force BOINC to use CAL with my HD4850 instead of OpenCL? (Message 49822)

Post:
04-Jul-2013 18:52:22 [---] OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 4700/4800 (RV740/RV770)
(driver version CAL 1.4.1664,
device version OpenCL 1.0 AMD-APP (851.4), 512MB, 495MB available, 2048 GFLOPS peak)

As you can see, the card is only OpenCL 1.0

Thanks

Ageless, I realize your help is voluntary and it is appreciated!
The point of this post was to show that the HD4850 is not OpenCL 1.1 compliant. That is why I was asking if BOINC could use the CAL app on my card instead. Otherwise, this card can only contribute to the Milkyway project. Since I was experiencing problems there, which are currently unresolved, I was looking for another way to utilize this card.
In this thread I'm not trying to resolve the problems with the Milkyway project, because as you may be implying, that would be duplicating your effort.
Given the information you have just provided, you are saying CAL is a dead end.

Originally, I was trying to make use of my HD4850. At that time, I wasn't interested in running Milkyway. Realizing the HD4850 was unsupported, I purchased the HD5570 for $45 new. Then, I ran into problems finding AMD drivers to satisfy both cards. Once resolved, I started looking for projects that could use the HD5570. It was during that time that both cards started taking on work. To simplify things, I set the client to ignore the HD4850. I got the HD5570 working and then ran into problems with the card becoming inactive (GPU is missing) because it is my secondary display adapter and I was not interested in using it to drive a display. In order to clear the status of "...missing", I reset the project. After that, the DistrRT project stopped sending me work.
So I got frustrated and when back to the HD4850 and hence turned to the Milkyway project.

Now I'm back to the current situation. Trying to find work for my HD4850, which is sitting idle.
In my opinion, it's a shame AMD didn't setup separate driver paths for each card. But I guess they didn't want to support people trying to run a non-crossfire setup.
So I hope I have expressed myself clearly and you/others can see what/why I'm trying to do.

Basically, for the projects where GPU0 did not meet the requirements [OpenCL 1.1], I disabled it. Then I enabled it for the Milkyway project.
Every thing was running fine for a few days and then I stated seeing computation errors. So I suspended the project.
I don't know what is causing that problem, but after doing some reading I thought, GPU0 only meets the requirements of one project. Then I looked at the CAL version and thought, what if I could get the projects to use their CAL exe instead by using the Anonymous Platform mechanism.

Understood.

I just noticed that the SDK 2.6 is installed under C:\AMD\Support\streamsdk_2-6-RC3_win732.

I wish I knew why the SDK that came with the Catalyst 12.1 package has a version of 10.0.851.4.

If BOINC detects one of my GPUs correctly, will it automatically start doing work?
I have it enabled in the BOINC Manager options.

By default the Catalyst 12.1 package loads the following packages:
CCC 2011.1205.2146.38999
AMD Catalyst Install Manager: 3.0.859.0
AMD Display Driver: 8.930.0.0000
HDMI Audio Driver: 5.18.0.5511
AMD APP SDK version: 10.0.851.4 <<< Out of sequence?

So I uninstalled the SDK and installed
AMD APP SDK Runtime: 2.6.831.4 [2.6 SDK]

Prior to that, I uninstalled everything in windows and restarted in safe mode. Then I ran Driver Fusion (Disksweeper) and then CCleaner. Then I restarted XP and installed the drivers. When I uninstalled the AMD APP SDK: 10.0.851.4, there was no way to determine what to clean. So I just installed the new SDK 2.6. Now I guess I will have to start from scratch, clean everything and intstall the Catalyst 12.1 package again.

I don't how to determine the minimum driver the HD5570 can use.

If BOINC detects one of my GPUs, will it automatically create the data directories needed?
Should I add anything to the cc_config to aid in debugging?

Thanks

I've reviewed the FAQs and I have some questions:

Could you explain the option "<allow_multiple_clients>0</allow_multiple_clients>"?
The BOINC client runs on my local machine, that I understand.

According to the log file, BOINC detects both GPUs but doesn't use them. I realize I'm telling BOINC not to use the 1st one.
This line in the log file concerns me:
clGetPlatformIDs() failed to return any OpenCL platforms

AMD says the all GPUs have to use the same drivers. This makes it hard for my legacy card HD4850 and the HD5570 to coexist. AMD/ATI could have used a better directory structure.
AMD suggests running the CCC 13.1. But if I do, the installer won't load the APP runtime.
Has anyone found a way to load separate drivers for each GPU?

Do I need a client for each CPU, GPU?
Do I need to setup directories or will the BOINC Manager do this for me?

Thanks in advance.
