Rom knows about this and will try to get a build VM that will not break things for other distros (notably Fedora and OpenSUSE). Right now he's using a Ubuntu LTS VM. I don't any more than that.

I'm not sure what yum is doing. I've never installed it that way.

If you want to BOINC to run in its own user account, these instructions are the way to go.

It's all CLI stuff, but things like creating the account can be done though the GUI if you prefer. The init.d script you need is in there too.

There was a wiki page on BOINC/Fedora but I can never find it when I want it. It might be something as dumb as chkconf boinc on (don't quote me on the syntax or the actual command) to get the core client into the start up routine.

And me personally, I don't have the manager running unless I'm checking up on it. I open a bash shell and do `boincmg` and that'll start the mananger. I just emailed Eric about that link with a possible necessary addition.

Pots back if you get stuck. I can't promise an answer but I'll do my best to find it.

bummp: How do you have BOINC installed? From the package manager or just downloaded and running to your home directory?

It almost sounds like boinc (the client) isn't running.

Can you do
ps aux | grep boinc

I'm not sure if that's the right thing to grep for, but it works for me (with boinc manually installed to its own user account).

I just partitioned and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit alongside my Windows 7 64-bit installation.

However, I may have accidentally installed the 32-bit BOINC program on Ubuntu. How can I check and make sure that I have the 64-bit BOINC client on both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7? Both BOINC clients are 6.10.58.

Thanks in advance.

How did you install BOINC? If you used the Ubuntu package manager, I have no idea. If you downloaded the .sh from Berkeley, just look at the file name. The 64 bit version will be named something like boinc_versionnumber_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh. The 32 bit version will be named something like boinc_versionnumber_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh.

You actually have to create a BOINC wide team. It doesn't happen automagicaly....

Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding the issue.

Sounds like the core client is crashing. Check task manager to see if boinc.exe is running. Look for stderr.txt in your BOINC data directory to see if there is any information in there.

(Sorry, best I can do. I'm a Linux gal and haven't dealt with BOINC on Windows in the last couple years)

What it sounds like is that the core client is either not starting or crashing.

When you're getting the can't connect to local host message, open a terminal windows and type
top
and then hit enter. Do you see BOINC anywhere on the list? It might be called something like boinc-client (I'm not an OpenSuse person, so I don't know for sure).

Have you tried uninstalling the ATI drivers? That's the thing that changed. If uninstalling let's BOINC run, then we've pinpointed the cause. And I'll try to find someone who knows the distro (and ATI cards) better than I do.

RAC (recent average credit) can still go up. It is updated when credits are granted. Since many projects use some sort of redundancy, there is usually a time gap between reporting work to the server and getting credit. Go to whatever project you crunch for, and you'll be able to see a list of work you've done recently. Some will have the credits pending. When your "wingmen" return the work and it goes through validation, you'll get your credit. RAC will then be updated. It's also a decaying average. Off the top of my head, I don't remember the formula (Jord probably does :-p) and I'm too lazy to search for it.
