Could you include the VirtualBox version, included in the package?

Due to problems with work-fetch for Test4Theory with the 4.3.0 and 4.3.2 versions of VirtualBox, the version included is 4.2.16

When using the BOINC + VirtualBox installer, and:
- When you have a version of VirtualBox installed already and it is 4.2.16 or higher, the installer will just install BOINC 7.2.28
- When you have a version of Virtualbox installed already and its version number is lower than 4.2.16, the installer will install VBox 4.2.16 and then install BOINC 7.2.28

I think the request was to show the VirtualBox version number that happens to be included in the bundled installer.
Right now, a user on that download page has no way to know which version of VirtualBox is included.

They do now when they read the Release Notes. :-)

By the way, I think the installer gives you the option of installing VirtualBox. It doesn't require you to install it. I'm not 100% sure on that, but if I recall, there's 1 dialog that says "required", but then the next dialog is an "optional install".

If you can confirm it is optional, could you update the release notes to reflect that?

I installed BOINC + VirtualBox over the 7.2.28 (+ VB 4.2.18) I had already installed, thinking it would tell me that I had BOINC installed already and that it would give me: a) an uninstall option, b) a repair option or c) tell me that there was nothing to do.

But no, it gave me the full BOINC installer as if 7.2.28 wasn't installed.
It didn't show an option of install VirtualBox, though.

If you use the bundled installer, and did not have 4.2.16+ VirtualBox installed, I believe the installer gives you the OPTION to install it.

Perhaps the release notes could be simplified to say:

When using the 7.2.28 bundled installer (BOINC + VirtualBox):
- If VirtualBox 4.2.16+ is not already installed, the installer will give you the option to install VirtualBox 4.2.16, and then will install BOINC
- If VirtualBox 4.2.16+ is already installed, the installer will just install BOINC

ISSUE with new BOINC 7.2.28:

With BOINC 7.2.28 my GPU have high usage and too high temperature (achieves more 75 degree Celsius).
I decided uninstall 7.2.28 and continue using the BOINC 7.0.64. This 7.0.64 version manages the GPU load in effective way, and I have no problems with high temperature.

For Boinc 7.2.28 and the old BOINC 7.0.64 I have set the options with the same parameters.

I'm using a GeoForce GTX 660 in a Windows 8 with Core I7.

Appreciate any comment of this problem preventing of use the new version.

The new BOINC version is not causing your problem.

Regarding your problem, I recommend installing eVGA Precision X. It will work even if you don't have an eVGA GPU. You can then set a custom fan curve so that the GPU fan will be at maximum before 70*C, in order to keep your GPU below 70*C, thus achieving maximum boost clock.

You will have to do additional testing.

The new 7.2.28 version of BOINC doesn't "load the GPU more" or "make it hotter". There are some bug fixes in the Task Scheduler where older versions of BOINC sometimes left a GPU idle, and now the new version has fixed that, so perhaps that is what you are seeing. Also, different types of tasks work a GPU in different kinds of ways.

In addition to using Precision-X to monitor the GPUs and set a fan curve, you can also use GPU-Z to get a quick glance at the current GPU status, including GPU Load %.

If you continue to have problems, and you believe it is related to BOINC itself, please post in the Questions and Problems forum.

I wonder if this could be because the (temporary, erroneous) application of CPU throttling to GPU applications has been reversed?

Something to cover in that 'additional testing', perhaps?

I know what you meant, but I don't think it'll do it that way as why would the installer with VirtualBox included give you the choice to install VBox or not, when you can just download the installer without VBox if you don't want it?

If it is already installed, it should just skip the part of the installer that installs VirtualBox and proceeds to install BOINC.

The reason it works that way is because a person may want to use the same installer, installing BOINC on 10 machines, but only wants VirtualBox on 3 of the machines.
Right now, I believe that IS possible to do, using only the bundled installer.
I'm going to retest again to verify; could you also perform that test?
And, if I'm right, could you update the Release Notes to indicate that VirtualBox is optional, even with the bundled installer?

I'll hold off on that until I get an answer back from the developers, as now the installation process is confusing, to say the least. I went and uninstalled my BOINC 7.2.28 and VirtualBox 4.2.18, to then start the BOINC + VirtualBox installer.

Up pops a message box:

A text saying "BOINC requires the following items to be installed on your computer. Click Install to begin installing these requirements. Pending: Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2.16 (x64)"

So, I click Install.
Up pops a message box:

"BOINC optionally uses VirtualBox 4.2.16 (x64). Would you like to install it now?"

That's what I call confusing the user base. Since when is a requirement first required, but a second later optional? So I have emailed the developers on this and asked for a clarification, and I am not going to update the RNs until I get an answer on that. For all we know, a new installer will be released which fixes the above and either make it both optional, or both required.

By the way, and I am sure you know about this, the BOINC User Wiki can be edited by anyone with an account. Think there's something not right? Ask David for an account and go edit.
