I am attepting to install version 5.4.9 (currently running 5.2.13). I continually receive the message that the installer can't find Boinc.msi. Any suggestions on the cause?

Try re-installing v5.2.13 then uninstall it before installing v5.4.9

I loaded 5.4.9 and could not connect any longer. It told me to select a default connection. When I go to the connections tab there was nothing to select because I am connecting via a home network and not dial up. I uninstalled and went back to 5.2 and it works great.

I also loaded 5.4.9 (over 5.2.13) and have had problems ever since. My Task Manager says "System Idle Process 99%, yet Boinc Manager as localhost says the project is running. If I restart my WinXP system, the Task Manager says it is running again but the system will only run for a little while. Later the process stops and when stopping and restarting the service, Boinc Manager says I have not entered the correct password. I then select Advanced, Select Computer and enter localhost (a series of dots appear in the password area) and then Boinc seems to start, but again the Task Manager does not show it as running.

Anyone know what the 'localhost' password would be?? (assuming that is the problem). Since nothing seems to be working I may need to go back to 5.2.13 since 5.4.9 seems to have problems.
Sincerely,
Dan

I believe the password can be found in the BOINC folder in gui_rpc_auth. I don't know if that is the problem or not. Did you "Add or Remove Programs" first from the control panel the 5.2.13 before installing 5.4.9? Have you set up firewall permissions if applicable for 5.4?

Thanks for the response...I have just pasted the password from this file back into the password prompt for localhost and still no changes. The Task Manager still says System Idle Process - 99%, yet Bonic Manager says my project status is Running (the cpu time is not changing).

When I upgraded to 5.4.9, I installed it over 5.2.13

Regarding firewall permissions, they have not changed - if 5.4.9 requires something special, I was unaware of it.
Sincerely,
Dan

Regarding the Boinc service, should the Boinc properties Log On as section be set to a specific local account or can/should it be set to the 'Local System account' and 'Allow service to interact with desktop'??

I just made this change and reselected 'Advanced, Select Computer' (in Boinc Manager) and the CPU started incrementing and Task Manager started displaying my task file again.
Sincerely,
Dan

Hopefully the change you made will continue to work for you. Other than that I'm out of suggestions. Perhaps one of the more knowledgeable volunteers here can help you if you continue to have problems, if the problem continues post back.

I also have been having problems with this version. Specifically, I get a message stating that the activities are suspended. The thing is, I did not suspend them, nor do I appear to have a way to resume them. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi,
I have a little problem with 5.4.9-gnu when controlling a remote machine (select computer ...option)
When I suspend the network activity, I can still download new work but can't upload it (I experienced that on the LHC project with very short Wus).

More: I noticed that when I suspend network activity, the activity is really suspended 5 min later.
As Boinc 5.2.13 was working well, and I've changed nothing in my network config, I suppose the problem comes from the 5.4.9 version...

Haven't seen the first problem but I've noticed the several-minute-delay also on Windows, on my local machine. This started with 5.4.9, just never got around to reporting it until now. It can be annoying & it's not consistent; sometimes the response is immediate. I've learned to watch the messages tab for the "activity suspended" message before doing whatever I'm trying to do that prompted me to shut down net activity in the first place...

It's not a bug, it's a feature.

From Ingleside's post here:

If there's currently an active upload/download, or you've just connected to a projects scheduling-server, it can take upto 5 minutes before client switches to "network disabled".

Also, if you manually hits "update", the client expects you knows what you're doing, and therefore tries to make the connection.

The change in behaviour was for the benefit of users that isn't permanently connected, and also has "only work when idle", so when they does make a connection the client will actually use this, and not just sit idle doing nothing waiting on the computer being idle for N minutes before starts upload/downloading anything...

Anyway, v5.6 should have separate network/crunching, meaning can example set preference to crunch during the night and connect during the day. If the 5-minute delay will be kept, no idea...

Ouch, my first total crash with 5.4.9 on WINXP SP1:
Popup: "Boincmanager is not able to connect to boinc"
Looks like after some "no new work" hammering as older versions blow up boinc:

I am running Bionic 5.4.9 on WIN2K SP4, 2.53G Celeron with 1G ram.

When the screen saver kicks in all I get is the bionic logo with a percntage graphic or a blank screen. How do I get the screen saver to show the correct graphic of the globe?

This is not isolated to the CPDN tasks. The same thing happens to SETI, Einstien, and Predictor when the screen saver kicks in. The "show graphics" option from the B-manager shows the correct graphics when it is avalible. Then again that is only about 70% of the time. Even on tasks where it had be previously avalible.

Any ideas on how to make screen saver mode work 100% of the time? Please, no work arounds that entail disabling or curtailing the screen saver.

I am running Bionic 5.4.9 on WINXP Pro SP2, 2.8G Intel with 512MB ram.

Like BalboaCZ i am having the similar problem as he is.

When the screen saver kicks in all I get is the bionic logo with a percntage graphic or a blank screen. How do I get the screen saver to show the correct graphic of the globe etc.?

This is happens to SETI, Einstien, Predictor, and the BBC Climate Change Experiment as well when the screen saver kicks in. The "show graphics" option from the B-manager does not even show the graphics when it is avalible, this is 100% of the time. Even on tasks where it had been previously avalible.

This has happened only since i started to run Boinc 5.4.9 after i updated to this version from the previous one.

Any ideas on how to make screen saver mode work 100% of the time? Please, no work arounds that entail disabling or curtailing the screen saver.
