Woke up, came in to my computer room, (I call it The Closet), and found SETI boards not functioning... Thought my internet speeds dropped again, until I came here...

SETI down, AGAIN!!! :-/

Setting to Suspend, Main and Beta... Back to Einstein... Again...

D'OH!!! :-(

No need to suspend, might as well crunch out those last few precious work units. After all there aren't going to be any more for a while.

I agree, according to this graph all workunits have been send. So Seti@Home is now dry, only resends will be available when S@H is back up again.

I wonder if the download servers are still at
208.68.240.21
208.68.240.13

As I can contact them as well.
208.68.240.16 I think is the upload server.

Well, this is Café, but I don't see a point in Your post Gary Charpentier. Nothing about S@H.

Yep, .13, .16, .20 and .21 are responding, but master database seems to be offline.

Rules:
1) This is the BOINC development board. Their posting rules apply. Their moderator(s) enforce. We are their guest.
2) This isn't the Politics Forum on Seti, consider it the Cafe Forum lite.
3) Have fun. Yes, that is an order! :-)

Original first post of this thread.

I see it as Gary having 3. The only problem it might be having is the pixel size, as not everyone likes to download 1024x682 size photo's on their device. So if you can make them smaller, Gary, that would be nice.

I'll tell you what seriously worries me if it is Oscar, the master database server, that has problems.

How about it being revenge of Mark Sattler? Can he not have invoked the secret Trojan he stored in the UEFI of that machine... ;-)

Let's just hope I can report all my work before the 20th of November, because from that day onwards my GPU is too busy rendering the world of Kyrat. Maybe even one or two days prior to that, depending on when Nedgames drops FarCry4 on my doormat. :-)

Having seen the first Let'sPlays on a PS4, I can't wait. Gorgeous gorgeous world.

I reckon some serious decisions will need to be taken in 2015. They simply cannot carry on collecting the data at the rate that they are, doing nothing with it, and expecting the kit to cope. I'll support Seti until the day I die, because of the lifelong friends that I have made because of it. But I have no problem at all also running WCG and their stuff when Seti is off line. Pragmatically I'm more likely to help find a cure for cancer than little green men.

I do agree, with my whole heart, with You Chris S.

I'll tell you what seriously worries me if it is Oscar, the master database server, that has problems. I asked Matt 3 years ago if there were any limitations on the size of an Informix relational database. He replied that no there weren't, and if there were, Seti was way away from that. I heard that Eric K has already found some limitations.

Why can't the master database be split into 5 year chunks, and just the current chunk get updated and backed up? The database has got so large because of the advent of GPU crunching, which the original infrastructure was simply not designed for. Also Nitpicker was supposed to second sift those promising candidates so the dregs could be dispensed with. That has not happened either.

Unfortunately, you can't throw out the negative results as you suggest doing. Those negative results are used by ntpckr to decide if a location in the sky is interesting or dead. Which is also the same reason you can't split the database up into 5 year chunks.

I reckon some serious decisions will need to be taken in 2015. They simply cannot carry on collecting the data at the rate that they are,

collecting what data? Oh you forgot we are out of data ....

We will see what we see, it is the way it is.

Yes some decisions need to be made. Perhaps the database can be split into two parts to save space. Part 1 being the items needed for ntpckr to run and part 2 being the misc stuff of who and which computer crunched each work unit. You do remember the promise to name the cruncher if found.

The painful issue is changes to the scoring algorithm. If they make any then they need all those individual pulse counts, etc. to be in the ntpckr database so new scores can be applied to each work unit.

Unfortunately this isn't accounting where you can close the books after some period of time, this is science and the books never close.

Finally I don't know where the Lab is putting the data from all the other Seti experiments they are running. If it is all getting collected into one database to be searched, then complexities are seriously multiplied.

In any case this pause while they get the green bank data ready is a good thing. Time to consider if a different design might be better going forward. Heck take it to a database class over in the CS department as a classroom exercise and see what they come up with for a design. You know how some profs love real world examples.

Up to your old tricks again I see. Why can't you come up with an "original" idea of your own? That was brought up on Eric's thread several days ago!

By the way, Kilroy has joined the party :-)

All other pages, and also Beta pages, are giving the standard "down for maintenance" message.

Still got 58 Multibeam and one Astropulse v7 in cache. So if I run 24/7, which I don't, then that's around 18 hours of work still to go.
