Considering that a great deal of the kit used is fairly modern, I'm wondering why it is that S@H closes for maint 'every' Tuesday.

Something there must be pretty rocky for a weekly down for main routine to still be in place.

I was thinking same thing, with new hardware and servers in colo, why S@H still have this weekly maintenance?

Why?

In My Humble Conclusion: Funding. No money or personel to observe/maintain/develop S@H 8 hours/workday...

So I think it's better to concentrate to S@H at least half day of the week to do maintenance, than doing critical/important work "with your left hand when doing your real job"

Gives me time to hack my old phone. Anyone know how to log in on a Samsung Gio GT-S5660 when one's forgotten the pattern, and after having tried multiple times now is asked to log in on their Google account, only for that applet to continuously state that either the account name or the password is wrong?

Apropos, neither the account name nor the password is wrong. I just signed out at Google and back in with the exact same name and password. The Gio is on the LAN, I just appointed it its own IP address, so it should reasonably be able to go out to Google.

Possibly 4 hours?:-) That's the 'stated' time S@H is supposed to be down.

Regards,

The modern equipment reduced the length of the outage from 3 days to 4 hours. What they're working on is not the hardware, it's the databases. Parts of them have to be manually cleaned up or they will get too big for the software to handle.

Perhaps a quick whip around for a new vacuum cleaner might be in order:-)

Regards,

Part 1, compact the DB's (flush the pipes)
Part 2, make a backup of a ton of data.
Part 3, apply any security/bug fixes
Part 4, deploy (on Beta) and new applications

It's been six hours now, since I was able to phone home the last time.
Humans.....sigh...

:-)

Yeah, well, lately the four hour outrage has been running more like six or seven. Still beats three days.

Guess I missed the three day thing... I've always remembered the four hour thing; six to seven hours now...

The 3 day outage had nothing to do with backups and DB compression, if you remember the forums came back in a few hours as now.

Here is front page message from 5th October 2010

Weekly Outage and Initial Catch Up
Every Tuesday morning (Pacific time) we begin a 3 day data distribution outage to focus on science processing and development plus any needed systems maintenance. The upload/download servers will be offline during this time. The web site (including the forums) will only be offline during the database maintenance and backup portion of the outage. On Friday, you may experience connectivity issues as the servers catch up with demand.

Thanks Bernie. That must have been just before I returned to the project. I was gone from the project for a few years following my separation, bankruptcy, and divorce. I'm glad to be back, though. :-)

I have to admit, this is the longest ban I have ever endured, and the most painful one.

I am losing my way here.

Much longer, and I don't know where I shall go.

Pitiful meows now.
This has gone on far too long now.

I cannot go on struggling like this.

It has to end one way or another.

Hold on my friend, I can understand what you're going through. A lot of people are pulling for you and you darn well know that! Everything will be alright (my favorite sentence to my kids)

I'm gong through minor withdrawal!!! My withdrawal is only minor, because all of you are here posting. So, since I still have communication with you all, it isn't so bad. :-)

My computer finished two of its three AP 7.05 GPU tasks... I unfortunately missed seeing it crunch them; so, I don't know how long it took my GTX760 to finish them... I hope I get to see the third one go.

The cricket graphs just indicated a shutdown of downloads. Perhaps this is the beginning of the end of this weeks extended outage.

I know I have seldom logged on here, but I may as well start now. :D
