Just wondering. Is there ANY non-beta research project within the BOINC community in medicine, biology, physics or chemistry that can use AMD\ATI GPU cards?

A know a few beta projects but there seams to stay in beta forever.

Check out the Choosing Boinc Projects page for projects that say (AMD/ATI GPU), Shame there's no 'last updated statement on that page' or look at the Project list page on the wiki site, (last updated 6 October 2011)
In both cases you'll have go and look at the Applications page of any project you're interested in to see if they're developed AMD/ATI apps in the mean time.

Einstein has AMD OpenCL apps.
Seti has AMD OpenCL apps.
Milkyway has always had AMD apps. Now sporting both CAL and OpenCL apps.
Collatz Conjec ture has had CAL and OpenCL apps for ages.
GPUGrid has AMD OpenCL apps.

Does WCG have any AMD apps these days?

Thank you Claggy & Angeless.

I shold have said 'science research project'.
The only 2 of intrest seams to be Einstein & GPUGrid and I think that GPUGrid ONLY works on NVIDIA cards and Einstein seams to have some problem with the ATI\AMD cards as reported un their forum.

EDIT: World Community Grid is in Beta test on some applications an have been fo a long time.

GPUGrid has AMD OpenCL apps.

I'm afraid not. GPUGrid is nVidia only, and cuda only (not OpenCL), according to their applications page.

They are associated with donate@home, which has functioned as their AMD/ATI testbed, but I don't think many people regard it as a "non-beta ... medicine, biology, physics or chemistry" project.

Make your own mind up at AMD GPUs are now usable at Donate@Home, a different project from GPUGrid.

PrimeGrid also has an OpenCL ATI/AMD app for their Proth Prime Search (Sieve) search,

GPUGrid has AMD OpenCL apps.

I'm afraid not.

I got that info from someone posting at WCG:
GPUGrid builds an AMD based version of their ACEMD app every time a new SDK is released and has worked with AMD but for the biomolecular processing done at GPUGrid AMD is about 10x slower than NVidia. So it's not that they don't want to utilize AMD, it's just that at this time doesn't make sense, kind of like trying to get non parallel apps shoehorned into a gpu.

I never checked into it myself as they're not an area of interest to me.

WCG just finished a BETA test rather successful: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.55

During that test I produced only valid results on NVIDIA GT240, ATI Radeon HD 7770 and the AMD A6-4400M APU.

IMO the GPU-application going into production on the WCG Help Conquer Cancer project can't be far away anymore.

POEM works great on my Radeon HD 7770s. It uses OpenCL, and seems to be about twice as fast on AMD cards as the comparable Nvidia cards, with less CPU usage, though how important that is depends on how fast your CPU is. (There is some evidence that you can get more from Nvidia cards if you are willing to use more CPU power, but on my E8400 Core2 Duo, the HD 7770s work better than Nvidia.)

It is mostly protein folding research, but they have recently slipped in some other projects (pentacene for OLEDs, for example), and might broaden it some more.

Yes I'm runing POEM using an app-info file to make it increse the load to 80-90% on my single 6970 card, i7 box. I'm also have a dual 5870, Q6600 box but POEM does not work well with cards in crossfire. And regarding high end ATI\AMD cards and high end Nvidia cards the Nvidia cards seams to work much bether with POEM than the ATI\AMD cards. I hoping thet the HCC gpu application will be finish the beta test soon where it seams to work just well but most of the beta test seams to go on forewer.

I think that AMD changed the architecture a lot between the 6000 series and the 7000 series. Running a single work unit (limited by my CPU, not the GPU), I get about 95,000 points per day on each of my HD 7770s, which is one of the lower-level cards. I assume that the higher-end cards would get proportionately more if you have the CPU to support them.

But it looks like help is on the way for HCC gpu. The last beta was largely successful, and there should not be many more tweaks to go. I get an average elapsed time of 2.86 minutes per work unit there with each of my HD 7770s, supported by only an E8400 Core2 Duo at 3.0 GHz, which I think is pretty competitive from what I have seen. A CPU upgrade next year will help even more.

The main strength of the high end ATI\AMD cards is their exelent Double-precision floating-point in hardware capability, to bad that the only projects that use that strength is Milkyway and a bunch of non-science projects.

Hi,

The website of World Community Grid says that they have one project that will run on a GPU that supports OpenGl..

A relevant forum post is at:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,33980

hope this helps,
Jay
