I am attempting to install BOINC on the PDC (GC) server. It fails to install and returns the message "Failed to create the 'boinc project' account" Cannot BOINC be installed on a domain controller? Is there a way around this?

Cannot BOINC be installed on a domain controller?

Yes, BOINC 6.x cannot be installed on domain controllers (which doesn't mean that it doesn't run there, just the installer doesn't work).

Is there a way around this?

Yes, several. The simplest is to install BOINC version 5.

Another is to copy an elsewhere installed installation to the domain controller.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Great! Where do I find version 5? On the website I see only versions of 6.

Direct links to version 5.10.45, 32bit and 64bit, can be found in the BOINC 6 Release Notes, under the section explaining why it can't be installed on a domain controller.

Does 5.10.45 recognise GPU's?

Installed W8x64 and Boinc 6.10.45 (as no other Boinc version would install) - so trying to test the only version of Boinc that works on Win8 (and DC's) :(

280.26 NVidia driver installed without a hitch, no probs during install and looks good in Device Manager, but not getting tasks from Einstein, which says I don't have an NVidia GPU (obviously restarted a couple of times).

Thanks,

No, the first one that does - and probably only NVidia GPUs, in case you wondered - is v6.4.5

As you've discovered, the problem with domain controllers is installation. Later versions apparently run OK, if you position the files manually, though obviously there's not much experience with Windows 8 yet.

The latest 6.12.38 will install on Windows 8. Still not on a DC, still because of those pesky roaming accounts. But other than that... see for links to the installers, the last post in this thread.
