Hi, I just upgraded my boinc to version 6.12.34 (Linux) and upon starting the manager I see there's no longer a Messages tab available. Why is that? It was really useful to me |

It has now become a window, available through Advanced->Event Log, or CTRL + SHIFT + E. It was hidden as a lot of (new) people would see all messages as errors and uninstall BOINC and be gone. So the messages are somewhat hidden, at least no longer prominently available. |

Being new to Ubuntu, I'd like detailed instructions on installing the upgrade. It is a xxx.sh file and I can not get the synaptic package to install it. Are detailed instructions available? Or can you provide them? |

On the topic of this thread, the Message tab or Event Log, just a few observations: When the BOINC Manager (BM) is open and the Event Log (EL) too, there's no way to alt-tab back or click on the BM window to get it on top. The Event Log is... period. Working around, move the Event log window out of the way. or size it to fit nicely below the BM window, you can still operate the BM completely. Now the second not so likable part: Minimize the BM window and the EL stays on screen, no way to minimize. No idea what the developers thought, but they've missed an opportunity IMHO to have both minimize simultaneous and pop back up, so the advanced user can watch both the tasks or projects tab activities whilst monitoring the effects in the message log. A small positive, which Is how I'm now operating under Linux: The said EV fitted below the BM, exiting the BM closes both windows. On restart of the BM the EV pops up in the same place... which is for that part how I like it, as user. And for those on pot or other substances to broaden the mind: In Ubuntu set the EV to follow you around in the different workspaces and you'll have something to figure out to get back to the BM...Alt-Tab was found to be the quickest, but if minimized, no way Jose... you'll first have to go back to the workspace before as Alt-TAB would otherwise only reopen the EV, and flips you back into the original workspace. When the BOINC Manager (BM) is open and the Event Log (EL) too, there's no way to alt-tab back or click on the BM window to get it on top. I can switch between BOINC Manager and the Event Log window with ALT+TAB. No problem here. Now the second not so likable part: Minimize the BM window and the EL stays on screen, no way to minimize. I can minimize the Event Log window first and then minimize the BOINC Manager window. I can minimize the BOINC Manager window first and then minimize the Event Log window. It must be a very special Linux Ubuntu, stock 11.04 OS that is the problem then... let me send note to Linus. (I did mention the OS did I not?). One more: Middle button mouse click on the top window frame brings up the pop up menu with Maximize and Minimize grayed out. Not even the mouse right click, programmed send of the window into minimize state work. Carry On. --/7-- |

It must be a very special Linux Ubuntu, stock 11.04 OS that is the problem then... I wouldn't be surprised. From Download All, bottom of the page: Linux info Yep, this means that any weird things you see on any other version of Linux, including the newer Ubuntu versions, can be a thing of those Linux versions. By the way, I did forward your plight to Rom. But in the mean time, I told you what I see in Windows. Where it works without problems. |

In my book 10.04+ means anything 10.04 and higher, of the official releases of course. 11.04 was released in April and 6.12.34 in July. BTW, unrelated, and reported on the alpha mail list, without much interest. The "http error 0" reports continue to flux in for 6.12.34, making it impossible for WCG members to contribute either fetch or report work. Downgrade to 6.12.33 and things works without a hitch. The release notes for 6.12.34 suggest there were no network related changes, i.e. rather puzzling. --//-- |
