Boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe need to be allowed through your firewall on TCP and UDP ports 31416. Boinc.exe needs separate access to the internet on TCP ports 80 and 443. See also this thread for further info. Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. (Kleiner Scherz) |

Hmm, instead of opening the ports for the programs, why not add the two executables boinc.exe and boincmanager.exe to the exceptions in the firewall? Also, can you check if your router is blocking BOINC connections? Add the ports to the router's exception list if possible. |

I'm having an issue with boincmgr retrieving status. It spins and finally says ERROR when using the simple view. In the Advanced View I see nothing. No messages. Running a fresh install of Fedora 14 with all updates. I tried disabling the iptables with no change. This has to be a Fedora 14 issue because boinc has been working just fine on Ubuntu 10.10. Ideas? |

Just a quick follow-up. I have Ubuntu running on one box and Fedora on the other. Both install fine but Fedora is never able to retrieve status and connect to a project. I only run rosetta so it is not a difference in projects. Up until installation of Fedora that box ran Boinc and Rosetta just fine under Ubuntu. |

bummp: How do you have BOINC installed? From the package manager or just downloaded and running to your home directory? It almost sounds like boinc (the client) isn't running. Can you do ps aux | grep boinc I'm not sure if that's the right thing to grep for, but it works for me (with boinc manually installed to its own user account). Kathryn :o) |

Kathryn, tis true! the boinc client is not running. I don't know why. I installed from the Fedora add/remove software feature. I have de-installed and re-installed no good. However, downloading from BOINC and manually installing works just fine. Go figure. Thank you Kathryn. |

Well, I spoke too soon. It ran the first time after the manual install but after a reboot I'm back to the same issue. What starts the client in Fedora? In Ubuntu, running the manager starts the client. I have never had to manually start the client. I tried a yum install for both and that does not work either. A manual start of boinc client does not work either. Ideas? |

I'm not sure what yum is doing. I've never installed it that way. If you want to BOINC to run in its own user account, these instructions are the way to go. It's all CLI stuff, but things like creating the account can be done though the GUI if you prefer. The init.d script you need is in there too. There was a wiki page on BOINC/Fedora but I can never find it when I want it. It might be something as dumb as chkconf boinc on (don't quote me on the syntax or the actual command) to get the core client into the start up routine. And me personally, I don't have the manager running unless I'm checking up on it. I open a bash shell and do `boincmg` and that'll start the mananger. I just emailed Eric about that link with a possible necessary addition. Pots back if you get stuck. I can't promise an answer but I'll do my best to find it. Kathryn :o) |
