SETI is coming back to life as I type. Forums are back online and the project is supposed to start work on a limited basis soon.

CPDN main project - continued outage of kraken

Milo has not had constant access to the machine that the kraken data must be transferred to. This is why the data transfer is taking so long. The Server status page is here.

Thank you for your patience.

Thank you for your patience.
The RCN team.

It's baaaaaaaack!

The server is up and running again after a serious
hardware problem. New workunits were created
meanwhile. See RadioRCN.

SETI website/database/forums came back online in the last hour. The project is still offline as far as new work is concerned. The staff said it was a MySQL DB crash and error messages said that the DB might be damaged. The did a recovery all day today. They are staying offline tonight and will try for a restart in the morning California time. The main DB server is still damaged/being replaced so the older backup DB server will be running as the main DB server if they manage to come fully online in the morning.
Good luck SETI see you in the morning I hope.

CPDN main project - kraken outage

When kraken's disk filled up on Mon 18 Oct Milo at first wanted to transfer its data to temporary storage, but there were difficulties with this plan.

Several weeks ago he ordered a new server with 32x 2TB disks for CPDN. It has arrived from the US today and he is installing it now. As soon as possible, probably early next week, he will transfer the data from kraken to it. The data transfer job may take two days. So FAMOUS models may not be able to upload their files until about Wed 27 Oct.

Files waiting in the Transfers tab of Boinc manager are OK. Do not try to force FAMOUS files to upload as they cannot at the moment. You can suspend Boinc network activity some or all of the time if you wish or you can take no action.

Project is slow due to a database machine swap.
The master boinc database machine (mork) is not operating properly. The task of serving the database has been moved to another machine (jocelyn). This temporary master database server does not have the capacity to run the project at full speed. Work distribution will be slow until the new server arrives. The purchase of this new machine was made possible by a very successful funding drive carried out by SETI@Home participants.

Well, the message boards are back, but SETI isn't dishing out or accepting any science yet.

SETI back down - no WU D//L, no scheduling server (so no WU U/L, either), and no fora. Bummer.

CPDN main project and CPDN Beta

Uploads to kraken

Kraken still shows as down on the CPDN Server status page but Milo has enabled uploads to it again. So CPDN main project FAMOUS files and Beta project _13 files for the three types of regional model can now upload.

Milo will at some time need to shut kraken down again for uploads but only for a few minutes.

Thanks to Milo for acting as quickly as possible and to all members for your patience.

SETI@home

Jeff Cobb - Project scientist - posted the following: - here

Just a quick note. Obviously, jocelyn is up. Mork is recovering.

The purchase orders for both oscar and the new mork went out late today or will go out early tomorrow. It takes a while for these things to work their way through the purchasing pipeline.

We decided to go with HP for these machines. They gave us a very good deal. We are getting two identical (oscar class) machines. I'll post the specs in another note. We hope to have them on hand in about 2 weeks.

At this point, we are discussing what we will do between now and when the new servers are on line.

Quantum Fire Alpha is down for a day or two due to a power cut at Cavendish Lab.

And they're back up.

QuantumFIRE Alpha have indicated that they are planning an extended outage (several weeks), while they plan and re-equip for an enlarged QuantumFIRE Beta. The plan was to keep the existing server running for as long as possible to allow work in progress to be returned.

QFA BOINC services are down again, and the website is inaccessible. Does anyone know whether this is the final Alpha shutdown, or just another random glitch? I've still got a few tasks that they're welcome to if they'd like them.

Extended outage warning for Seti@Home. From this thread:

Jeff Cobb wrote:
We've decided to keep the project down until the new servers are up and running and the databases migrated to them.

The forums will stay up.

The back end and the upload server will stay up until we clear the outstanding results.

The time line we are looking at is about one month - two weeks for the servers to arrive and another two to get them going. We'll see as time goes on whether or not that's too aggressive.

The down time will be used for preparing the databases for migration. For example, on the science side, we can finally finish a big merge of the spike table and drop the old spike table. This will make the database smaller and easier to migrate.

We will also use the time for science processing and analysis.

More later...
