Message 34299 - Posted: 20 Aug 2010, 20:23:26 UTC - in response to Message 34298.

There's a new option:
Suspend work if CPU usage is above
0 means no restriction
Enforced by version 6.10.30+

The default is 25%. Set this to zero to not use the option.

No, it's not a Bug, it's a new feature, go to your computing preferences at one of your projects, and set the following to Zero to disable it:

Suspend work if CPU usage is above
0 means no restriction
Enforced by version 6.10.30+ 0 %

and if you do want your computer to suspend computation when you're doing something intensive on the computer, then set it to a higher value,

It's most probably the screen saver part doing that. That's been fixed in the next generation BOINC.

Hi.

I received the message for the new manager program being available for the Mac OS system and read up on the system requirements that it's OK to use for OS 10.3.9. That said, when I downloaded the extractor file and then opened the installer, it pops up a message that I need 10.4

Was there an error in the systems requirement page, or is something funky going on with the installer?

Thanks!

-Doug

(ps: first time user on the forums, but I've been running boinc since around 2005)

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php states you need 10.4.0+ for BOINC 6.10.58.

Mac OS X
Version 10.4.0+

Ah, I see you read it on http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/System_requirements. I'll have the developer for the Mac look at that. (Edit: the second page now also shows 10.4.0 and later. Sorry for the confusion, but thanks for pointing this out. I'm afraid that for OS X 10.3.9 you're stuck at 6.6.36).

Couldn't find a "Start New Thread" link on BOINC so forced to post here (sorry)!

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
BOINC 6.10.17

Problem:-
Unable to upgrade BOINC to 6.10.56 ... I have spent days on this.
Simple, (preferably UK English) step-by-step, noobie, no Linux knowledge (preferably one-click upgrade) help required!

Please, pretty please don't ask me any technical questions nor give any /bish/bash/bonk nor terminal instructions. Please, pretty please don't! I just won't understand, sorry again!

I just want to upgrade BOINC 6.10.17 to BOINC 6.10.56 then get some sleep.

Hi.
Thanks for that, but ...
It doesn't upgrade/update BOINC 6.10.17 to 6.10.56/58 although all the Install progress details show OK.
When I check I'm still running BOINC 6.10.17
I have also tried uninstalling (Complete Removal) the pre-existing installed BOINC 6.10.17 elements that I can, via Synaptics Package Manager, then re-installing via the link ... still showing BOINC 6.10.17 AND I lost my curent work progress.
I think I'll simply stick with 6.10.17 until a BOINC update is pushed through from Ubuntu/whoever.
But thanks, again, for the interest in this thread and understanding that a One-click-fix is what's required.
Cheers, Ray
PS - According to the pre-existing and post-failed-upgrade BOINC metapackage info, the Ubuntu Developers (Maintainer) say via Properties that 6.10.17 is the Latest Available Version .. checked today 24/8/10

I'm having trouble installing this update. I'm using windows 7 on a 64 bit HP desktop. I downloaded the 64 bit version. I keep getting "Internal Error 2718 {4d12d895-50b2-4287-b389-ad4d74f85693} I am installing over the previous version of boinc. I have tried removing all boinc references from the registry, all boinc folders form HD. A fresh download, several reboots, a registry cleaner. I wanted to try installing from the command prompt, but I don't know how to do this. Can anyone help? I've used boinc for years had don't want to stop!

Thanks.

I suspect that your Windows installer is damaged or corrupt. The error message you get is from the Windows installer. Try to follow the steps to fix it, here in the MSKB. Try that first, please.

You may also want to check in the registry, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions that the installer isn't being blocked there.

One thing you can also try is go back to an earlier restore point, to see if that fixes the problems with the Windows installer.

Thanks for the response. I tried the steps listed in the mskb, (Performed method 1 2 4 8 11 and 12) Did a fresh search of the registry and removed everything boinc. Also ran a couple of registry cleaners. Used windows installer cleanup (boinc is not listed)Also checked for pending installs in the registry.I am at the end of my knowledge!Amy other things to try? I think I may just use my system backup image and reimage my HD with the version prior to the attempted upgrade and forget trying to upgrade.

Reimaging your hard drive is something to do.

But really, all "Internal Error 2718 {4d12d895-50b2-4287-b389-ad4d74f85693}" means is this:

Windows found that there is a problem at registry entry {4d12d895-50b2-4287-b389-ad4d74f85693} and therefore can't continue the operation you requested. Just stick "internal error 2718" into any search engine.

It is also possible that you have a corrupt BOINC installer. In this case, delete your temporary internet files (Start->All programs->Internet Explorer->Tools->Internet Options->General (Browsing history)->Delete->Check temporary internet files and history->Delete). Then download the BOINC installer again from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php (although, perhaps better to do it from all versions, in case you're offered the 32bit version).

Problem solved! This error is caused by an incomplete removal of the previous software. The solution was to re-download the old version. Reinstall it and then use the old program to uninstall. After restarting the computer, the installation of the new software goes without incident. Previous preferences and stored data are maintained and all is well with the world. It is strange the a complete inspection of the registry and HD did not locate the BOINC related entries that were causing the problem, if that was indeed the cause. In any event, this procedure works. I hope that this helps others with the same installation problem.

  • Fix: Numerous CPU/GPU scheduling fixes

Is it described somewhere how the scheduling is supposed to work?
The reason for asking is that I want to help reporting observed issues, but since I don't know how it is supposed to work, it is difficult to determine what is important in such reports.
With the 6.10.58 version and just having one CPU project, orbit, which was and still is down, I noticed the BOINC app not prioritize working on the tasks according to their deadling, but instead set some tasks to "high priority". This resulted in BOINC to postpone tasks it was working on and start woring on tasks with a longer deadline. Fortunately, this computer was able to do all tasks within 24 hours of the deadline of the latest task. There are circumstances around this issue probably is significant to explain why this behaviour occurred, but I can't list all of them here. However, if I had known which circumstances that play a role in the scheduling, I could list those and you could probably have found the cause for this issue.

Hi. I have also noticed that since installing version 6.10.58 that wu's are not prioritising correctly and I have lost several wu results due to them being over the report deadline. I am having to manually stop other wu's from running in order for the wu's nearest to their deadline to run and complete in time.

What are the chances of getting cc_config.xml incorporated into the next release?

I'd suspect none. The cc_config.xml file is for advanced use only, so if you want to have one, you'll have to make it your self.
