Sorry to be a bother, I looked at the Release notes, I do not see anything to discriminate one 6.10.x from another 6.10.x

I am running 6.10.43, as I did not have whatever ailed that version and I wanted the BOINC only screen saver controls.

How does 6.10.56 differ from 6.10.43?

  • New: Adjust GPU activity settings via the advanced view activity menu
  • New: Added ability for a project to be specified as a "Backup Project" by setting its resource share to 0
  • New: Suspend computation of BOINC applications if CPU usage from non-BOINC applications exceeds a volunteer defined value (Defaults to 25%)
  • New: Support detecting SSE2, SSE3, and other forms of advanced instruction sets for older Windows machines (Windows)
  • Fix: Numerous CPU/GPU scheduling fixes
  • Fix: Numerous work-fetch fixes
  • Fix: Mac Installer for non-admin installs

6.10.56 has all that plus:

  • New: Support for custom installers to automatically cause new accounts to join a specific team when attaching to a project for the first time (Windows)
  • New: Support for Nvidia Fermi cards
  • New: Added support for 'Transfer at most X Megabytes every N days' preference

Dear friends:

I just started installing version 6.10.56 on my computer, an HP xW8600 workstation with 4 processors under Windows 7-64 bits. Sorry to report that the installation fails as soon as it starts, with message:
"Error reading setup initialization file".
Please let me know what to do, or fix the error if it's in your installation script.

Until I hear from you I'll reinstall version 6.10.18.

See BOINC Installer: Error reading setup initialization file for what causes that error and how to fix it.

Try the 64 bit version. I had somebody else with exactly the same problem.
Maybe a download problem indeed.

Thank you: your advice proved effective.

I installed version 6.10.56 on both my HP workstations, one with an NVIDIA GPU and one with an ATI GPU. Both now run fine, but the NVIDIA GPU alone is compatible with the Milkyway@Home project that requires double-precision calculations.

After installing the 64 bits edition of BOINC version 6.10.56, I found suspicious network traffic started to happen. Using the Windows 7 resource monitor I found two boinc processes that started to have a connection to www.007guard.com

In the host list I have an entry that redirects 007guard.com to localhost which should prevent the system from connecting. When the resource monitor is active and you can see boinc becoming active, at first a connection is made to localhost. But after a few seconds, it is replaced and a connection to www.007guard.com is made.

To make sure I have deinstalled boinc and deleted all of its directories. Then performed a full system scan with McAfee, Spybot SD, and Ad-Aware, and no problem was found. Then I downloaded and installed a fresh copy of the boinc software version 6.10.56. Within a few minutes a connection to www.007guard.com was created.

I have not seen this behavior with previous versions of boinc. Does the software on the boinc download site contain a new virus not found yet by any scanner?

It's more likely that your malware scanners didn't find it.

Do a net search for the full name of the problem program, and look at some of the results for help.
This one for instance.

I installed the latest version (6.10.56) the other day and since then it appears that it will only download and run tasks for a single project at a time (I'm signed up for 5 projects: cosmology@home, einstein@home, lhcathome, milkyway@home & seti@home). I have a quad core machine (AMP Phenom 9550 Quad-Code @ 2.20 GHz, 4.0 GB, 32 Bit Vista Home Premium). Before installing this new version, I usually had several projects running or waiting to run tasks at a time. Any other similar reports or thoughts?

The latest version has a new option:
Suspend work if CPU usage is above
0 means no restriction
Enforced by version 6.10.30+

The default is 25%.

This is used for limiting heat problems.

**************

If your previous version was 5.*, then you need to start using a new version 6.* option:
On multiprocessors, use at most % of the processors
Enforced by version 6.1+

This is to allow for the trend to increasing number of cores on a cpu chip.

e.g. 25% of a quad core is one core.

But suspending work can cause some tasks to fail. And as some projects don't save, you may loose some or all of your work.

On Windows machines use something else like http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/index.html This is more transparent to the running tasks.

Les,

Thanks, I did, of course, go through the options first and even reset all my projects. But just for ducks, I did the resets again about an hour after my post and it started download a bunch of work (except for lhc & milkyway, both of which reported no new tasks available). So perhaps there was just a glich somewhere [which computers never do we all know ;-)], but my box is just as busy as a little beaver right now running four workunits with another 6 waiting for some processor time. Just needed a kick in the right spot, I guess.

Hi all,
I have installed 6.10.56 in some AMD 965 machines running openSuse 11.2 and I've noticed that several work units are not finished, are left "waiting to run", and others, more recent, are started.
Example: a work unit is 90% done but left waiting to complete. Meanwhile it's deadline is reached and work unit - ibercivis and edges - is aborted by project servers.
Back to old 6.10.17 version, and with same wu's, their report time is orderly followed, none is left before completion.

The Activity feature "Use GPU: never" does not prevent pojects from asking work for GPU, even projects with no GPU applications - edges for example.

The "Use GPU: never" option was never intended to prevent BOINC from asking work for the GPU. It's an activity preference with which you can set if you want to use the GPU or not, and then all the time, based on preferences or never.

It doesn't prevent the work request as that's a whole different thing. If you don't want BOINC to use the GPU at all, use the <no_gpus>1</no_gpus> flag in a cc_config.xml file.

The work request continues until it backs off to once every 24 hours. It does this as a project that doesn't have a GPU app today, may have one tomorrow. Then BOINC can fetch work for it without needing your attention and intervention.

Understood, tks.
This version sometimes stops a wu before ending it and starts a new one, not respecting the Report deadline order. This puts some problems as you can imagine...
Tks again.

Boinc has always run in FIFO within a project. It only check due dates to prioritize work if there is a chance it won't be completed on time following the normal order.

Well, I have noticed that it is not working in FIFO basis. I had a lot of wu's -just one project, no mix- started but not completed, in waiting to run state. My wu's are usualy sorted out by Report deadline and only this version jumps forth and backwards...
I had several hours of work in a lot of "waiting to run" tasks, then decided to go back and use 6.10.17 in all linux machines and I guess 6.10.18 to a pair of microsoft ones, and now no loss of work as it is now running FIFO.
Tks.
