Message 29532 - Posted: 17 Dec 2009, 16:06:22 UTC

Both 6.10.21 and the previous version have displayed this issue. I am the admin and sole user on my DP G5 running 10.4.11, BOINC is run as a service. Initially after boot I can access BOINCManager just fine, but after a few days without a reboot I get an error stating:

"BOINC Manager

You currently are not authorized to manage the client. To run BOINC as this user, please:
- reinstall BOINC answering "Yes" to the question about non-administrative users

or

- contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_master' user group."

This is a fairly minor annoyance, can I remedy it by adding my short user name to boinc_master group in NetInfo Manager? Shouldn't I already be a member of this group, being the admin, only user, and the original installer of BOINCManager?

You could add your name, although it should've been done automatically. Though Charlie has had problems on some systems, so he's constantly tweaking it. You could try BOINC 6.10.25 to see if that one fixed it for you.

So I checked NetInfo Manager and my name is in the boinc_master group, I will give 6.10.25 a try. Thank you for the reply and the link.

Message 30242 - Posted: 18 Dec 2009, 6:35:25 UTC - in response to Message 29533.

After installing 6.10.25 and rebooting, I received the same error message when I launched BOINCManager for the first time. Later after another reboot I was able to open in but this is pretty much the same behaviour as 6.10.21 and the previous release. Checking the boinc_master group I find that I am still a member of it.

Forwarded to Charlie. He'll probably be passing by at any time and ask for specifics or things to test.

I think I've found the problem. Please try version 6.10.26 when it is released, which should be soon.

Cheers,

Will do, thank you both. Should I watch for .26 at /dl/?C=M;O=D or is it going to be a public release?

It will certainly be on the /dl/?C=M;O=D site, whether or not it becomes a public release.

I'm having a similar issue.

I was running version 5.10.45 for a while and everything was fine. Then last week I went to the website and saw that there was a newer version - 6.10.21. I checked the system requirements, and when I saw that I met them, I downloaded and ran the installer. Installation went smoothly. No questions about permission came up during this.

But when I tried to open the Boinc manager, it said I didn't have permission.

Nothing I have tried has fixed this problem. I checked the user groups. I searched this website. I wrote to you guys (and got no answer). I searched the site and found a newer version (I had to do some serious digging - why isn't the latest version on the "download" page?), which didn't work either. And by the way, the link on the help page that says "Live help via Internet phone or email" does NOT include anything about e-mail.

Even using Time Machine to restore my old version didn't work.

Like Penguirl, I am the sole user (and admin) on my Mac. But unlike them, I get this problem EVERY time I try to open it - not just sporadically.

I am now locked out of Boinc, completely.

Oh yes, and one more I forgot to mention:
Having read this thread, I looked for and tried .26 - no luck there either.

If all else fails, try running the Uninstall Boinc application provided with the latest version (now 6.10.28) and then run the installer again.

Via 'snail mail'? The answers in the mail. :)
On a web site? SETI perhaps? This site isn't SETI, it's BOINC.
And both of your only 2 posts on this site are here in this thread.

The latest public release version IS on the downloads page.
The other versions are still test / beta.

... the link on the help page that says "Live help via Internet phone or email" does NOT include anything about e-mail ...

That page is for getting in touch with other BOINC crunchers who are willing to make themselves available via either (or both), Skype or email.
Not many volunteered for the former, and probably none for the latter.

I just installed 6.10.28 and everything looked good at the first launch of BOINCManager after reboot.

One thing I've neglected to mention is that whenever I upgrade BOINCManager the daemon fails to start at the post install auto-launch. After reboot I never see that error again. This has been the case for me since about v5.x, I thought maybe it was related to running BOINC as a service.

Did that, three times. With reboots before/between/after un/installs.

No, by e-mail.

Ah. Wish they were labeled thus.

I'm not talking about WHO the page is about contacting, but HOW. The page is titled "Internet phone or email" but there's no e-mail on the page. Just instructions for using Skype.

Perhaps I did write to SETI and not Boinc. Either way, I don't care about pointing fingers or nitpicking other people, I just want to get it working again.

Markman, please clarify: Does the error alert say that "You currently are not authorized to manage the client" or that "BOINC ownership or permissions are not set properly."

These are two different issues; I need to be sure which one you are seeing before we can try to diagnose your problem.

I think I have fixed this for the next release of BOINC. Please post here if this is still a problem with the next release.

It's been a few days since I tried, but I believe it was the first, "not authorized to manage the client."

Message 30612 - Posted: 21 Jan 2010, 9:21:53 UTC - in response to Message 30575.

It's been a few days since I tried, but I believe it was the first, "not authorized to manage the client."

Several people reported this problem a while back, but I thought we had fixed it. I'm particularly surprised that running Uninstall BOINC and re-installing did not fix it. Apparently your situation is different from the cases we fixed.

First, I need to know which version of OS X you are running.

Then, would you be kind enough to run some tests and report back the results? Not only will it help me solve your problem, but it will help me fix BOINC for other volunteers who may have the same situation.

When you see the "not authorized" message, please open the Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and enter the following 3 commands. You might want to copy and paste these; they are case-sensitive:
dscl . -read groups/boinc_master
dscl . -read groups/admin
ls -al /Applications/BOINCManager.app/Contents/Resources

In the response to the first command [dscl . -read groups/boinc_master], you will see a value for PrimaryGroupID (typically between 29 and 32). Please also enter the following command, substituting this value for the xx:
dscl . -search groups PrimaryGroupID xx

Please post the output you get in terminal. You can copy and paste from the Terminal window, or use the Export Text As ... command in the Shell menu. You can either post the results here or send them to me in a private message.

Also, please confirm whether the user under which you are running BOINC did appear in the GroupMembership list for both groups boinc_master and admin.

Thank you in advance for your help in tracking down this problem.
