I'm currently running BOINC on my Linux OS and I found it hasn't been working quite efficiently: the default priority is set to 19, and the Whetstone/Dhrystone benchmarks are around the half when running under Windows in this machine(which I have removed), so do the RAC. When I renice the tasks to -10, or even 0, there's a large improvement in performance comparatively and doesn't cause system slow-down, only a little bit warmer(but doesn't contribute to global warming since heating is already being supplied). Is there any thoughts of adding the feature of task priority preferences in future versions? I've modified the source to make it run under normal priority, but when making it suggests that I haven't configured my OpenSSL correctly. |

but when making it suggests that I haven't configured my OpenSSL correctly. some mistake here: It reports the error when configuring(./configure --disable-server --enable-client CXXFLAGS="-O3 -funroll-loops -fforce-addr -ffast-math" ), error message: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cannot find openssl libraries. Please install openssl or specify installation directory with --with-ssl=(dir). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anybody has any suggestions? I've installed the openssl package already. |

Huh, solved by installing the package `libcurl4-openssl-dev', the error message is somehow ambiguous. Well, to compile stuff, you do need the development packages, not just the regular ones. Which reminds me... gotta finish setting up my box with the development stuff. Kathryn :o) |

I'm currently running BOINC on my Linux OS ... Which breed of Linux? Some breeds including Ubuntu are reportedly lowering CPU clock when there are no normal-priority tasks running. Well, low priority really means that task doesn't insist on getting any decent amount of CPU power anyway. Best advice for machines that are supposed to run BOICN projects would be to de-activate such functionality of OS. Power management rings the bell for me ... If your try to run BOINC apps with normal (or not so much niced) priority, then it can get into the way when machine is not used only for interactive work, but also for some more serious jobs (like gaming ;-) ).
