Hi all, As a refugee from 5 years crunching with United Devices and the GRID, I thought I may have stood a good chance of understanding how BOINC works. How wrong I was. I wonder if I'm the only one who finds it very disjointed and hard to navigate around. ( Can you feel the frustration ! ) I've been crunching 'Einstein' and 'WCG' using BOINC MANAGER for nearly a year now. I have tried to attach other projects but after my initial success, I don't seem able to attach to anything else. Rather, I can get them to attach and maybe load some work and then BM just kicks them out again. Can anyone help to explain what is going on. Planet 'B' presumed nonexistent. |

Have you used an account manager such as BAM! or Grid Republic? If so you need to add the new projects at their website and then sync with the site. Kathryn :o) |

Hi Kathryn, Thanks for your quick reply. Is the BAM you refer to, a different thing to the BOINC MANAGER that I mentioned I'm having the trouble attaching projects to ? Incidentally it's version 6.2.19 ? If not then that may be the problem as I thought they were the same thing. To attach a project, I go to - 'Advanced' and then 'Attach to Project' then I pick a project ( Having already signed up to that project on their site ) and add my E-mail and password, it communicates with the project and having done that says I am now successfully attached to that project. The project then appears in the list of projects on the first tab of BOINC MANAGER. Some time later in the 'Messages' tab of BOINC MANAGER, I get: Master file download succeeded Sending scheduler request: Project initialization. Requesting 1 seconds of work, reporting 0 complete Scheduler request succeeded: got 1 new tasks New computer location: home Started download of metropolis_3.12_windows_intelx86.exe Started download of Helvetica-Bold, txf Finished download of metropolis_3.12_windows_intelx86.exe Finished download of Helvetica-Bold, txf Started download ofspinhenge_logo.jpg Started download of spinhenge_logo_earth.tga Finished download ofspinhenge_logo.jpg Started download of tex_day.jpg Finished download of spinhenge_logo_earth.tga Finished download of tex_day.jpg Started download of tex_night.jpg Started download of 8_Fe30_map_1413_161.xml Finished download of 8_Fe30_map_1413_161.xml Started downtoad of 8 Fe30 mao 1413 161, Finished download of tex_night.jpg Finished download of 8_Fe30_map_1413_161.jj Started download of 8_Fe30_map_1413_161.nn Started download of 8_Fe30_map_1413_161.ww Finished download of 3_Fe30_map_1413_161.nn Finished download of 8_Fe30_map_1413_161.ww Started download of statjcon.png Started download of slideshow_metropolis_01.png Finished download of statjcon.png Finished download of slideshow_metropolis_01.png Started download of slideshow_spinhenge_01.png Started download of slideshow_spinhenge_02.png Finished download of slideshow_spinhenge_01.png Finished download of slideshow_spinhenge_02.png Started download of screenshot_new_01.png Started download of screenshot_new_02.png Finished download of screenshot_new_01.png Finished download of screenshot_new_02.png Started download of screenshot_new_03.png Started download of screenshot_new_04.png Finished download of screenshot_new_03.png Finished download of screenshot_new_04.png A little later I get: Spinhenqe@home 24/11/2003 11:04:05 Resetting project Splnhenge@home 24/11/2008 11:04:05 Detaching from project Sorry for all the words but thought it may make the issue clearer. You mention "sync with the site." Maybe I'm not doing that bit ! How do I do it ? I've got about as high up the list of crunchers as I'm likely to with my one comp, and am now in the top 2.5% in the UK and the World as far a stats go. I feel it's time to attach to a few more projects, for variety and to make a few more baskets for my eggs. I clocked up over 730 full days in 5 years with UD GRID fighting Cancer and we all got kicked in the teeth at the end and don't know if any of it was worth doing, hope so. Appreciate any help as I think I've done everything according to the book. Yours James Planet 'B' presumed nonexistent. |

Is the BAM you refer to, a different thing to the BOINC MANAGER that I mentioned I'm having the trouble attaching projects to? BAM! (Boinc Accout Manager) is part of BoincStats.com from where you got your signature image, and it is completely different from BOINC. If you have registered with BAM! (not BoincStats), you must attach to projects using BAM!, otherwise BAM! will detach you again, similar to that: A little later I get: You can check if you are using BAM! (or any other account manager) by clicking on the Tools menu item in advanced view of BOINC Manager. If I do so, I get a single submenu item called "Synchronize with BOINCstats BAM!" Gruß, Gundolf PS: You can enter the signature image in Your account (at the bottom of this page) under Community preferences. Then you don't have to enter it manually in every post. Hi Jahn, I also get "Synchronize with BOINC stats BAM!" when clicking on the Tools menu item in the Advanced view of BOINC Manager. So I must be registered with BAM! I did enter into my Sig preferences after the first time but it then updated all posts and therefore I got a double Sig. So I deleted it again. So the question is, how do I attach projects using BAM! Where is the link ? Is this BAM ? If so that is what I'm using. If not then how ? Confused Planet 'B' presumed nonexistent. |

The image that you posted is just your list of projects. If you originally used BAM, then you probably would have done so by using the Attach to account manager in the Tools part of the menu, instead of using Attach to project Once you do this, you have to use BAM for ALL other attaches, as BAM is a very jealous mistress. If it catches you attaching to other projects using the BOINC manager, it will kill off those other projects. :) I don't know how BAM is used, but the web page is here. |

I don't know how BAM is used, but the web page is here. And Willy has Step by step setup instructions on that page and a link to his FAQ. However, if you don't want to stay with BAM!, there is a menu item in the Advanced menu of BOINC Manager named "Stop using BOINCstats BAM!..." Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. Thanks Les and Jahn, I now understand better the difference between 'BAM!' and 'BOINC Manager' and having logged into BAM! I see all the projects I've been trying to attach to where already in my list the projects, see below: There didn't seem to be any hope of improvement so I took your advice and severed my links with BAM! and have 'Attached to the Projects through 'BOINC Manager' and so far they have stayed put. Fingers crossed. I wonder what would happen if I now reattach to BAM! or maybe tried the other one. Maybe not tonight. Thanks again. Planet 'B' presumed nonexistent. |

Attaching a new host by default will not attach an existing host to a new project. You can attach existing hosts to new projects using either the host list or the resource page. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |
