TANPAKU has now been down for 3 weeks and I agree there is not much information on what is happening. I have 60hours of unsent work waiting and becoming increasingly out of data. I am not sure what to do with it. Should I wait or just delete it? I guess there are thousands in the same situation. I was hoping the down time would be a few days, but it has dragged on, and with no new information. Might the team have been scrapped, project abandoned, or could the entire team developed serious illness? Perhaps the repair job did not go too well; a small team could have built a new server, set it up and re-configured it for the project well within that time. |

It's now late September (more then a month since the date in their lattest message), and still no info. Like many I also have unfinished WUs. This is the point where without newer info one begins to wonder if the project has been abandoned or just no timely work on the matter. |

If anyone knows how please tell me how to contact someone at BOINC to ask them to contact the folks running the TANPAKU project to find out what is the problem. |

To Professor Tadashi Ando(and TANPAKU project) It does not operate more than TANPAKU project, one month. How does it turn out? Is a project the end? Can you ask for a briefing as such? |

It's Oct now and the Tanpaku server has been down for over 6 weeks. Apparently the person responsible for the project is out of the country, so it seems unlikely that the server will be up and running any time soon! I have taken Tanpaku off one of my systems and will be doing the same with the others shortly. It is unfortunate that the Tanpaku team have acted so irresponsible towards the contributors and undermined the Boinc projects credibility. Many people have been left in the same situation as me; I have over 60hours of unsent work. My guess is that the work done would be lost anyway, so there is no point having numerous computers repeatedly trying to contact a server in Japan. Even if Tanpaku get up and running again I will be disassociating myself (disconnecting) from the project because of their failures. I am annoyed that the Boinc community did so little to help sort out this problem. The lack of leadership of the Boinc project is becoming a problem. It seems that no-one is responsible for anything. Rather than having a hierarchy or centralized structure, there is a small minded individual project mentality. The only Project that seems to have moved away from this attitude and structure, but still uses Boinc, is the World Community Grid. The smaller projects seems to be on and off, up and down, emerging and abandoned. Surely the Boinc team can see that this is having a negative impact on participants (disillusionment) and can lend a hand to struggling projects. For example, should a projects server fail, Boinc or an alternative project (a bit of synergy), could have a standby server to upload data to. The projects domain could be re-routed when DNS routing to the projects own server fails for say 5 hours. |

I have had some email conversations with a scientist in Japan. They are very breife and provide no time line, but at least someone answered. Dear Sir, We are replacing broken computers now, and preparing new service. Please wait for a while though it troubles you. Sincerely yours, Masayuki ******** Professor Department of Information Sciences Tokyo University of Science Crunching for SCIENCE not CREDITS. |

Finally, some news even though it is now over a month old. I'm willing to wait on Project TANPAKU for a while longer. The only computer I have running TANPAKU now is normally not online and I only use it to run BOINC projects. My other computers have been switched to the Einstein project. Should TANPAKU get going again I will add them back to my other computers. By the way, I agree that BOINC seems to not really care one way or the other and goes out of their way to avoid keeping their members informed. It takes more work to avoid work than it would be just to do the work. |

Boinc is just a framework for people to use to create and run projects. It's not up to the handfull of BOINC people to keep track of what projects exist from time to time, and what is happening with them. Just as it's not the job of Microsoft to keep track of all of the things for which people use Windows. The total number of BOINC projects is now around 100, so if you're not happy with some of them, then there are plenty of others to run. |

I just looked at the TANPAKU site again: http://issofty17.is.noda.tus.ac.jp/ It is now available in Japanese only. Google can attempt to translate it: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://issofty17.is.noda.tus.ac.jp/&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dissofty17.is.noda.tus.ac.jp%26num%3D100%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26client%3Dopera%26rls%3Den%26hs%3DOqE Although the translation is poor, it is clear that they had a serious problem and that they do not plan to reactivate the project soon. They say something about using the data. At the bottom of the page is a link which translates as "page of results". If you click on that link there is an English version. The English version (original, does not need translation) has some graphical results: http://issofty17.is.noda.tus.ac.jp/doc/Results.html Apparently, most of the data has or will serve some scientific interest. It also appears that any results still waiting to be reported will never be accepted. My best wishes to the Japanese scientists who set up the project. I will be pleased to contribute more time to them when and if they ever set up the project or a similar one again. |

I posted something in the shout box a few days ago and got an answer from a Japanese: Project is now dead and the staff have been moved to other projects. Game Over. Sorry to see it happen; I was hoping it would be back up by now. |

It is now March 2009 and Tanpaku is still down. Has the project been permanently discontinued? I would appreciate feedback. |
