Message 18813 - Posted: 24 Jul 2008, 18:54:14 UTC - in response to Message 18812.

That looks very interesting !

I will try the following cc_config.xml
...
If the debug info doesn't help, maybe the option to delay the start of applications and/or updating to the new client 6.1.6 might help.

MfG, MEX

The <start_delay> option won't work before version 6.x.
Your cc_config.xml file should look like this:
<cc_config>
    <log_flags>
        <http_debug>1</http_debug>
        <http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
        <network_status_debug>1</network_status_debug>
        <proxy_debug>1</proxy_debug>
    </log_flags>
    <options>
        <http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
        <start_delay>60</start_delay>
    </options>
</cc_config>

The <http_1_0> option did help me a lot with http_error, but I think it wouldn't harm to try it in your case. As mentioned above, the <start_delay> option will cause a Unrecognized tag in cc_config.xml: <start_delay> message in version 5.x clients, but otherwise doesn't harm either.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Currently I have only written the flags into my cc_config.xml but until I reboot my computer, or restart the client, I wont get results from these flags ...

As I know about the clients quirk with not being able to connect to the www when started during boot, and how to correct this later with a restart, I am not in a hurry.

MfG, MEX

PS: How do I upgrade to a 6.x version of the client, and will i have to upgrade the manager too if I do this ?

If you want to stick with the package from Fedora, you'll have to wait for Milos to get a new package put together and pushed out to the repositories.

If you want to do your own daemon install, then both install and upgrade instructions are here.

Currently I have only written the flags into my cc_config.xml but until I reboot my computer, or restart the client, I wont get results from these flags ...

There is a menu option in Boinc Manager to do that: Advanced / Read config file.
As the manager isn't started at boot, i prefer to change the cc_config.xml with gedit myself.

After booting I still get the following messages with your cc_config.xml:

@MEX:

I installed Fedora 9 and BOINC 5.10.45 via RPM. BOINC is able to access the Internet when I am logged in as normal user (not root), even with SELinux set to enforcing.

Are starting the client during boot ?

Are you starting the client during boot ?
Yes, it runs as a daemon (starts at boot time before any user logs in).
Did you use the "Fedora 9 i386 DVD" for installing ? Or did you update a older installation, or a new netinstall, ... ?

Installing BOINC via RPM ? Is that the same as "yum install boinc-client boinc-manager" as mentioned in the BOINC wiki ?

Looks like either my hardware (FSC ESPRIMO Mobile V5535 with Celeron 540@1.86GHz, 4 GB RAM & 250 GB HDD ) isn't supported fully by f9, or I made some faults during installing f9 :(
I assume this might be because of the SiS chips this notebook is using for LAN, graphic, ... time to install BOINC on my PS3 to look if I have the same problem there.

... time to install BOINC on my PS3 to look if I have the same problem there.
EVEN WORSE !

I installed linux64 from the Fedora 9 ppc DVD with petitboot as otheros.bld on my PS3.
Installation with yum did work as expected, but the BOINC Manager doesn't have his usual icon in the menu.
When I try to select OPTIONS in EXTRAS of the BOINC Manager the manager disappears ( crashes ? ).
I am able to connect to the servers ( which indicates that my connection problem with the client being unable to connect to the servers when started during booting f9 is hardware-specific on my FSC ESPRIMO Mobile V5535 :rollingeyes: ) even when the client is started by f9 during boot.
But the servers of ALL my projects doesn't find platform "powerpc-pc-linux-gnu" !
I didn't expect that BOINC would find PS3 clients, but at least PPC clients should be available on most servers :(

MfG, MEX

PS: "power-pc-linux-gnu" doesn't look right !
( I would expect ppc instead of pc or powerpc without -pc )
Can it be that there is a faulty platform name in the RPM ?

Maybe try a fresh install of F9 and BOINC? When I installed F9 I used all the defaults except for time zone and hostname. For hostname, rather than the default "automatically via DHCP" option I selected "manual" and entered a hostname. I don't see how that could affect BOINC's ability to connect to the Internet but perhaps it does.
...
If it's the SiS chipset then it should not connect for the root user too. Why a connect problem just for a normal user? I mean either way (no matter who is logged in), root owns the binary that requests/uses the connection and the running process belongs to the user named boinc not the user that logs in. How and why does it decide to connect when root logs in but not when normal user logs in?
I used the default DHCP on both platforms and it works on the PS3.

I assume it is a timing problem at my notebook, where my SiS LAN isn't ready at the time init is starting the boinc-client during booting :rolleyes:

When I log in later with my user mex I don't have any problems using Firefox, only with boinc-client which seems to remember some old state until it is restarted ...

MfG, MEX

PS: Currently the inability of my PS3 boinc-client to get a ppc application from ANY server of any project in which I am participating is much more important that the LAN timing problems of f9 with my V5535 :(

Perhaps. You could test that theory by doing:

1) /sbin/chkconfig boinc-client off - do not start the daemon at boot
2) reboot, login as mex
3) /sbin/service boinc-client start - start the daemon
Currently I login as mex after booting, then do "/sbin/service boinc-client restart" and then the client is able to connect ... I assume that not starting the daemon at boot wont change anything at this.

What I am looking for is how to change the time when the client is started during boot to a later time when more is initialized or to delay the start of the client for a few minutes.

MfG, MEX

PS: I am not looking for cell applications for my PS3 right now, only for PPC applications, which can support altivec, like those clients running on old Mac's with PPC CPU

See this project list. There might be one with an app for your PS3. The platforms are auto updated regularly by a script that querys all the listed projects for platforms they support.
Riesel Sieve

* URL: http://boinc.rieselsieve.com/
* Institution: Riesel Sieve community
* Official launch: 28-10-2007
* Platforms: Linux/x86, Linux/PowerPC64, windows_amd64, Windows, Windows/x86_64, Linux/x86_64
* Description: Find prime numbers of the form k*2n-1
Sadly most of these projects only seem to support Linux/x86 :(
I found only one supporting Linux/PowerPC64 (not counting the proprietary? Yoyo or PS3grid which support the PS3 with Cell platforms).
Seems that I will have to contact http://boinc.berkeley.edu/alpha/, join SETI alpha or will have to compile my own client for my PS3 :(

You've the client, but you don't have any PPC work units, if I'm right (Kathryn, Eric?) -- so this is solved for me:)

Regarding the other problem (not being able to connect to the network), I'm pretty sure that this is just because networking is not up when the boinc daemon is started. Please type "chkconfig --list" and post the output.

PS: How do I upgrade to a 6.x version of the client, and will i have to upgrade the manager too if I do this ?

If you want to stick with the package from Fedora, you'll have to wait for Milos to get a new package put together and pushed out to the repositories.

BOINC 6 is still under development, isn't it? I'll upgrade the package as soon as it will become an official stable branch.

Not entirely, the client tries do download a application from the server, THEN it would download a WU ... so actually I need a PPC application from a projects server for beeing able to download a WU (which are the same for all applications of a project).

As the client cant find a application for my PPC64 with Linux, it is possible that the name of the platform for which the client is requesting a application is not correct. Please check this on another PPC64 hardware with Linux (for example a old Macintosh with PPC64 and Fedora9).

My guess is that you got bitten by delayed DHCP configuration. There are two strategies to start while network configuration is done via DHCP:

  • The first one stalls initialization scripts until LAN configuration is received from DHCP server. Only after that the rest of initialization is done. This insures that LAN is up and functional before other services, possibly requiring LAN connectivity, get started.
  • The second one continues with the rest of scripts and tries to receive DHCP parameters in background. This insures slightly faster start-up times.

There are pros and cons for both approaches. The first one makes sure that LAN is up and running (unless it times out waiting for DHCP server reply). The second one is slightly faster, specially when there's no LAN connectivity while starting.

I think I've seen that Fedora is using the later approach. To circumvent this problem, there are a couple of ways, all of them involve editing start-up script. The best way would be to check for proper LAN connectivity (e.g. there should be a default route), but not longer than some period of time (in case there's no LAN connectivity after all).
A bit easier would be to simply sleep 20 seconds immediately before starting boinc CC as daemon.

HOW do I tell the client to sleep 20 (or less) seconds before starting BOINC client as daemon ?

What do I have to add to which init script ?

MfG, MEX

PS: Currently I use a LAN cable to connect my notebook to a Buffalo WHR-G125-EU, maybe I made something wrong configuring my router :rollingeyes:

As the client cant find a application for my PPC64 with Linux, it is possible that the name of the platform for which the client is requesting a application is not correct. Please check this on another PPC64 hardware with Linux (for example a old Macintosh with PPC64 and Fedora9).

Ah yes, I agree this could be the case (I already had to deal with a similar problem for i386), however I don't have access to any PPC machine.
What's the content of the line starting with:
"Starting BOINC client version 5.10.45 for"
on your PPC/PPC64 machine?
(it is e.g. i686-pc-linux-gnu on an i386 machine)

Next time I boot my notebook, I will type "chkconfig --list" and post the output BEFORE I restart the client, as the current output is after a restart when the client is able to connect to the projects servers.

This doesn't matter: chkconfig --list prints out the settings of installed daemons for all runlevels (whether they should be enabled (Ein) or disabled (Aus) at the specified runlevel)

What happens if you choose "Retry communication" from the menu after booting up *without* restarting the client? Does it work then? If the main problem is really that your network is not ready when starting the service, this should help. Otherwise I'm afraid it must be caused by something else.
