If this is the wrong forum then I apologise. I (personally) don't find it easy to find my way around this website. I am attempting to run the Climate Change Experiment but cannot find the relavant forum.

I downloaded BOINC yesterday (28/12/07) and it seemed to be running OK. Today I went to look and found it had stopped and was displaying the following messages:

29-Dec-2007 11:29:10 [---] Resuming network activity
29-Dec-2007 11:29:15 [climateprediction.net] Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
29-Dec-2007 11:29:37 [---] Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
29-Dec-2007 11:29:38 [---] Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.
29-Dec-2007 11:29:40 [climateprediction.net] Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server
29-Dec-2007 11:30:40 [climateprediction.net] Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
29-Dec-2007 11:31:01 [---] Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
29-Dec-2007 11:31:02 [---] Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.
29-Dec-2007 11:31:05 [climateprediction.net] Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server
29-Dec-2007 11:32:06 [climateprediction.net] Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks

I thought that I would re-start it and so suspended the two screens and then exited the program. I then would have restarted BOINC but found there is a selection of .exe files in the BOINC directory:

Boinc.exe;
Boincmmd.exe
Boincmgr.exe
Boinctray.exe

I would try each one in turn to see what happens but am concerned that if I click on the wrong one then I could cause problems.

Which one will restart the experiment

When you installed, the installer should have put a link called "BOINC Manager" in the start menu.

But if you want to start it from one of the exe files, you'd want to start boincmgr.exe. That in turn will automagically start boinc.exe.

As for the actual error, make sure BOINC is allowed through your firewall.
boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe and boinc.scr need to be allowed on localhost (your computer) to communicate on TCP port 31416
boinc.exe needs to be allowed onto the internet on TCP port 80.

Hmm... It did manage to get work, but it can't send trickles back...

Are CPDN servers all up and running?

There's been a lot of server access problems caused by them being worked hard with data extraction for the physicists.
This seems to happen most at about 8am (and now also 8pm) UK time.

As well as being busy, some firework / proxy issues prevent trickes working, although downloads work OK.

What sort of firewall and proxy do you have?

Thanks for your help. I did eventually guess that boincmgr.exe ran the experiment and got it back up. When I got it back up I was able to visit the appropriate forum where I read to exit and reboot the PC. I did this and discovered that indeed the experiment starts without any intervention on my part. I do seem to be sending a lot of trickles - every 40 minutes or so (although this reduced overnight). Is this usual?

It is a bit frequent.

We could help you more if you posted on the cpdn forums, as we could then check your computer setup, look at your models, etc
Hope to see you there.

Do you have 'keep in memory when suspended' set to yes or no?

It looks like you've got 'run when busy' set to false, and judging from the way the trickles are being sent, each time you do anything on the PC it throws away the work since the previous checkpoint and starts at that point again.

Usually most PCs don't have a problem with doing Boinc simultaneously to whatever else you're using the PC for (Boinc tasks run at low priority). As long as the PC has plenty of memory, that is.
