Firstly, I apologise if I have missed this topic on an FAQ or previous ost, but I can't find it. I have recently installed BOINC manager and have a climate prediction project up and functioning. The manager will not let me connect to any other projects. Here is a typical sample set of messages: 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Starting BOINC client version 5.10.20 for windows_intelx86 11/09/2007 16:04:33||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Libraries: libcurl/7.16.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Data directory: C:\Program Files\BOINC 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Processor: 1 AuthenticAMD AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3100+ [x86 Family 15 Model 12 Stepping 0] 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Processor features: fpu tsc pae sse sse2 3dnow mmx 11/09/2007 16:04:33||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Memory: 1023.48 MB physical, 3.90 GB virtual 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Disk: 465.76 GB total, 386.39 GB free 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Local time is UTC +0 hours 11/09/2007 16:04:33|climateprediction.net|URL: http://climateprediction.net/; Computer ID: 755811; location: (none); project prefs: default 11/09/2007 16:04:33||General prefs: from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ (last modified 2007-09-08 19:57:14) 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Host location: none 11/09/2007 16:04:33||General prefs: using your defaults 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Reading preferences override file 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 511.74MB 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 921.13MB 11/09/2007 16:04:33||Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB 11/09/2007 16:04:33|climateprediction.net|Restarting task hadsm3fub_0066_005902557_1 using hadsm3 version 506 11/09/2007 16:05:43|climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message 11/09/2007 16:05:43|climateprediction.net|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks) 11/09/2007 16:05:49|climateprediction.net|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 509] 11/09/2007 16:18:50||Fetching configuration file from http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/get_project_config.php 11/09/2007 16:19:02||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 11/09/2007 16:19:04||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. 11/09/2007 16:22:54||Fetching configuration file from http://www.ufluids.net/get_project_config.php 11/09/2007 16:23:28||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 11/09/2007 16:23:29||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. 11/09/2007 16:23:46||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php 11/09/2007 16:24:12||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 11/09/2007 16:24:13||Access to reference site failed - check network connection or proxy configuration. 11/09/2007 16:26:16||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php 11/09/2007 16:26:43||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 11/09/2007 16:26:45||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. 11/09/2007 16:28:21||Fetching configuration file from http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/get_project_config.php 11/09/2007 16:28:30||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 11/09/2007 16:28:32||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. 11/09/2007 16:32:28||Fetching configuration file from http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/get_project_config.php 11/09/2007 16:32:39||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 11/09/2007 16:32:40||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. The implication seems to be that my computer is fine, but that there is a problem with everyone else's servers. I am not sure I believe this. I have tried turning off my firewall and antivirus software, along with my anti spyware software. I am running XP sp2 on an AMD sempron 3100+ using i.e.7 Has anyone any idea what my problem is, or have amost all servers attached to BOINC genuinely gone down? Thanks Paul C |

This is invariably a problem at the participants end : there are several things it could be. * Router issues (try rebooting the router) * Proxy server issues - is this a home PC, or a work/university PC? Do you use some sort of proxy or gateway? * DNS issues (try rebooting your PC which will clear the local cache) * Firewall (you've already tried disabling this) * ISP issues I'm sure there are other possible causes which I've forgotten. The following post has a section about network issues: http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=5896 |

Heflin, Thanks for the helpful comment. Do all the other sites also do their maintenance on Tuesdays as well? MikeMarsUK, Thanks for the genuinely useful comment. Unfortunately the posts I have seen do not seem to help. I am accessing the web from my home PC via a netgear ADSL router (DG824M). Will this make a big difference? I don't claim to be a networking genius, but as far as I can tell, I am not connecting via a proxy. These are my network connection details (if it helps) Physical Address: 00-50-8D-65-1B-F5 IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server: 192.168.0.1 Lease Obtained: 13/09/2007 08:45:33 Lease Expires: 16/09/2007 08:45:33 DNS Servers: 158.152.1.58, 158.152.1.43 WINS Server: I have tried again today after checking the service status, rebooting both the computer and the router. That's just weird... You can get to the CPDN servers, but nowhere else. What happens if you try opening http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/get_project_config.php http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/get_project_config.php in a browser. You should get some XML. And how are you attaching? Are you letting the wizard fill in the URL for you (as in clicking on the project in the wizard). I wonder if constructing the appropriate account_*.xml file would let you attach... (and I'm probably just babbling with this idea) Kathryn :o) |

Yes, I'm using the wizard and just going with the URL it fills in. I do get XML when I put in the URLs you posted, but being a non-programmer it all means very little to me. Any ideas as to what I should do next? Paul C |

Abacus- I got a big smile in the difference between 'helpful comment' and 'genuinely useful comment' ROTFL!! I do get XML when I put in the URLs you posted, but being a non-programmer it all means very little to me.Each XML should be referencing its own project. Like for SETI... <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?> - <project_config> <name>SETI@home</name> <master_url>http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/</master_url> "...home PC via a netgear ADSL router (DG824M). Will this make a big difference?" Should be fine. I *assume* accounts were created for these additional projects. I *assume* you can web browse to each project. I *assume* you can 'login' via web browser to your account on each project.?? I *assume* you used the SAME e-mail address on all projects. It appears from DNS you are using that you are in general London,UK area For one project (with no in-proccess work), in BOINC Manager you can try DETATCHING, then re-ATTACHING to project. In case initial setup never completed. It could still be a DNS issue at your ISP/DSN provider. If I can find the info, I'll send a PM to bypass them as a test. uh....port...what's the port in his router that needs to be open? [never seen this issue myself] back along the lines of 'helpful' but not 'useful', maybe CPDN assimulated you and doesn't want to share ;) |

uh....port...what's the port in his router that needs to be open? TCP 80 for all http project communications. TCP 443 for all secure https project communications. Local firewall should have port 31416 open for communications between boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe and boinc.scr, but this port doesn't need to be open in the router, unless he's trying to control an external PC, from his internal PC. |

Thanks! Knew someone would recall faster than I could search the forums for some vague recollection I had about a previous open port question. Since Abacus is presumably already surfing both http * https, he shouldnt need to worry about them. |

uh....port...what's the port in his router that needs to be open? "Opening ports on the router" is for incoming connections! There is no need to open any port on the router to have BOINC communicate. |
