Firstly, I apologise if I have missed this topic on an FAQ or previous ost, but I can't find it.

I have recently installed BOINC manager and have a climate prediction project up and functioning. The manager will not let me connect to any other projects. Here is a typical sample set of messages:

The implication seems to be that my computer is fine, but that there is a problem with everyone else's servers. I am not sure I believe this. I have tried turning off my firewall and antivirus software, along with my anti spyware software.

I am running XP sp2 on an AMD sempron 3100+ using i.e.7

Has anyone any idea what my problem is, or have amost all servers attached to BOINC genuinely gone down?

This is invariably a problem at the participants end : there are several things it could be.

* Router issues (try rebooting the router)
* Proxy server issues - is this a home PC, or a work/university PC? Do you use some sort of proxy or gateway?
* DNS issues (try rebooting your PC which will clear the local cache)
* Firewall (you've already tried disabling this)
* ISP issues

I'm sure there are other possible causes which I've forgotten.

Thanks for the genuinely useful comment. Unfortunately the posts I have seen do not seem to help. I am accessing the web from my home PC via a netgear ADSL router (DG824M). Will this make a big difference?
I don't claim to be a networking genius, but as far as I can tell, I am not connecting via a proxy.

You can get to the CPDN servers, but nowhere else.

What happens if you try opening

in a browser.

You should get some XML.

And how are you attaching? Are you letting the wizard fill in the URL for you (as in clicking on the project in the wizard).

I wonder if constructing the appropriate account_*.xml file would let you attach... (and I'm probably just babbling with this idea)

Each XML should be referencing its own project. Like for SETI...

I *assume* accounts were created for these additional projects.
I *assume* you can web browse to each project.
I *assume* you can 'login' via web browser to your account on each project.??
I *assume* you used the SAME e-mail address on all projects.
It appears from DNS you are using that you are in general London,UK area

For one project (with no in-proccess work), in BOINC Manager you can try DETATCHING, then re-ATTACHING to project. In case initial setup never completed.

It could still be a DNS issue at your ISP/DSN provider.
If I can find the info, I'll send a PM to bypass them as a test.

TCP 80 for all http project communications.
TCP 443 for all secure https project communications.

Local firewall should have port 31416 open for communications between boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe and boinc.scr, but this port doesn't need to be open in the router, unless he's trying to control an external PC, from his internal PC.

Knew someone would recall faster than I could search the forums for some vague recollection I had about a previous open port question.

Since Abacus is presumably already surfing both http * https, he shouldn�t need to worry about them.

"Opening ports on the router" is for incoming connections! There is no need to open any port on the router to have BOINC communicate.
