I have just detached from a BOINC project whose message boards have posts advocating murder, assassination, and beheading--and these posts have been up for awhile. I am very close to pulling all three of my computers out of BOINC all together because of this advocation of violence and hate in direct contradiction of posted forum rules. I am a social security recipient and in that long life, I think that this is the first time that I have complained about an abuse of the Right to Free Speech, but to paraphrase the Supreme Court; Free Speech does not include yelling "FIRE!" in a crowded theatre.

Yes, please state which project this is on. We can ask BOINC's main developer to email the project's administrators to get them to remove such posts.

Oh, hold on, you mean Tanpaku?
(that was an old thread you posted in).

Like I said, it's been up there awhile--and guess what, it's still offensive. If it's such an old post why is it still there? Evidently you folks already know about it--all the more reason I should leave.

Easily said, I read the date of the last post before yours. Hence my comment about it being an old thread. I may have Tanpaku bookmarked, but I don't crunch for it or post on its forums.

Now, before you go, why don't you email Tanpaku and give them a run down on why you think that that thread should go, perhaps that the administrator there can do something about it. Their email address is at the bottom of the main page. It's tanpaku-support at mt dot is dot noda dot tus dot ac dot jp (replace the at with @ and the dots with . and you'll have the address).

If you CC in Dr. Anderson it may help as well.

Garry, the projects all have independent administrations. The vast majority of project forums have mods and admins who are very hard-working and actively maintain the standards we all expect. Don't let one thread on one project put you off a massive public endeavour with so many generous participants.

Having said that, I agree that the thread in question is a terrible embarrassment to the whole boinc community. I hope you do send an email quickly. If the thread is still there in two days' time, I'll be sending some emails myself.

I've sent an email to admin there. I've actually done so in the past over other issues. He was pretty good in responding to me in the past, so we'll see what happens with this.

But I do agree with Mo. There are some projects that have extremely active admin (Rosetta and RieselSieve and PrimeGrid) come to mind and some that have little to no involvement.

it seems a bit silly to leave a project (or all projects) because of one nutcase posting. it's not like every kook on a board represents the entire project, scientists, participants etc! it looks like this person posted to a Japanese board, which doesn't have any moderation of the English-speaking/writing board.

As the thread is still there and Dagorath has replied to Garry in my view offensively, I've now sent an email to Tanpaku with a copy to Dr Anderson in Berkeley. As it's now the weekend, I shall wait until perhaps Tuesday to see what the Tanpaku administrators do. If the thread is not deleted on Tuesday I'll ask one of the Japanese Tanpaku crunchers to contact them.

I have received a very positive email response from Tadashi Ando who is one of the Tanpaku developers.

I was searching around checking out various projects when I came across the Tanpaku "trolls flourish here" thread... it was still being actively posted in but winding down. I decided at that time that Tanpaku was definitely not going to receive any cycles from me but that situation didn't affect the other projects that I crunch for or my outlook on BOINC in general.

I see that in response to the emails that the thread has been locked. A thread that hasn't been posted to in almost a year. I think it would have been best deleted but that's just me. It only reaffirms my decision to not help that project with my resources.

We have to give the developer Tadashi Ando who emailed me time to talk to his colleagues and for them to work out a strategy. He did say that they'd need a few days, which is to be expected.

I wouldn't be surprised if

*they never even realised they should appoint moderators capable of handling the occasional difficult poster in the English section

*they mostly don't understand the sarcastic, demeaning, abusive and obscene phrases, slang, abbreviations and acronyms

*when they think they've recognised some of these phrases, they don't believe it's possible on a scientific forum and conclude that they've misunderstood

*they may want moderators to make joint rather than individual decisions - I don't know this, I'm just wondering

*they thought members could just all help each other with technical queries and problems

The Japanese researchers and developers have had the courtesy to open a forum section in a language very different from their own. How many of us could post in the Japanese section or moderate it? We need to allow them time to adopt a strategy and implement it. The email I received gave the impression that they are willing to do this. So I think we should wait patiently and treat them with courtesy and generosity.
