Hi, I am running 5.8.15, and downloaded today 5.8.16. When I run it, it gives me a dialog box saying: Error reading setup initialization file So, I can't install it... please, help... Regards, Leo |

I'm assuming that you're on Windows seeing as Mac and Linux release versions are up to 5.8.17. First thing I'd do is try running the 5.8.15 installer again. If you don't have it, you can get it here (direct download). Basically do a repair install. Then try running the new version installer. Failing that, you can try the utility linked in this FAQ. thanks, but no luck.. tried the installer clean up, even when the error is not the same, so it seems I will wait for 5.8.17 then.... Regards, Leo |

I ran into a problem trying to put 5.8.16 on my XP machine as well. I then went and ran the install and told it to completely remove BOINC and then re-installed - I had previously drained all of the work queues first. After re-installing 5.8.16, it worked fine. |

excuse my poor english, but what do you mean "drain all the work queues"??? does it mean to copy the 'projects' folder, remove everything, and then copy it again? or stop new tasks, wait for all of them to finish, and then remove? Regards, Leo |

Put all projects on No New Tasks, run down the results you still have, make sure you upload & report them and then you can do maintenance. |

I am currently running win 6.2.19 and attempting to upgrade to the most current version 6.4.x but have not been able to successfully execute the installation file(s). In attempting to install 6.4.22 through 6.4.25, I have received the error message "error reading setup initialization file" and the install immediately aborts. I've executed the "repair" install option, deleted all installation files, run windows install cleanup utility to remove ALL BOINC-related installation and downleveled from 6.4.21 to 6.2.19. Same error message occurs... Is this error being seen elsewhere -- is there anything I've missed? WinXP SP3 Patches current through December 10, 2009 via Windows Update. Which versions? 6.4.5 is the latest, there are no higher numbers available yet. I wouldn't go for 6.4 yet if I were you as it's very much in beta with lots of problems at the moment. Stay at 6.2.19 until you see a stable 6.4 being released. P.S: Next time please post this in a new thread, don't resurrect a very old one. |

Thanks, Jord. I have been trying to upgrade to several versions beyond 6.4.21 with the latest attempt using 6.4.5 -- all the same results. My apologies for reopening a stale thread, I searched the forums for similar errors/discussions and this one was obviously a very close match. I will heed your advice and open a new thread for any further discussions on this error. Thanks again. |

I have been trying to upgrade to several versions beyond 6.4.21 with the latest attempt using 6.4.5 -- all the same results. You must mean 6.3.21 or 6.3.23 then, while with the 6.2 series any higher versions are World Community Grid BOINC beta versions. BOINC's latest recommended: 6.2.19 WCG BOINC latest Beta: 6.2.28 BOINC's latest development: 6.3.23 BOINC's latest Beta: 6.4.5 |
