I just installed Boinc on a laptop running XP.

I have been trying to add projects but after the user and password dialog of any project, I get a message unable to receive HTTP. At that point my internet is interrupted, and every URL I try to visit comes up with a google page saying page not found and I have to restart my computer before anything will work again.

I am upgrading from the world community grid client and want to get crunching again.

Cheers.

Did you upgrade over the WCG client? Or did you uninstall that one first, then install a later version of BOINC into the same directory?

I take it you're using the Attach to Project option in Boinc Manager?
You did allow BOINC fully through your firewall software, on TCP ports 80 and 443?

Port 80 is used for communications (downloads, uploads, reports)
Port 443 is used for secure attaching through.

What happens if you just click on any of the links you see here? Do you get the same Google page back?

If you do, you're blocked from all these pages.
In that case, do you use a proxy to connect to the internet? If yes, what kind of proxy?

I first uninstalled WCG client then I installed the BOINC client.

I have a direct connection to the internet, I have never had troubles with ports or nat. So I don't think that is the problem. Although I do have a software firewall which I disabled.

I only get the google pages after I get the error from BOINC and not before.

Here is the exact error it is giving me.

"Required wizard files are missing from the target server.
(lookup_account.php/create_account.php)"

OK, I am waiting for an answer from one of the developers, as I have never seen that error before. I'll get back at this.

Ok, which projects are you trying to attach to that give you this message?

As the message is given on projects that still use an older version of BOINC software, for BOINC versions 4.xx ... not 5.x.x

Steven,

What does your browser do if you try and open the page:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/lookup_account.php

Do you get something like this?

-1
missing or bad parameter: email_addr

Thanks in advance.

Which firewall are you using? Which virus scanner?

Do you use a proxy server?

The anti virus/firewall I use is Bit Defender. As far as I can tell I am not behind any proxy. I have a direct connection to the internet and ports seem to be forwarded automatically.

Where I am currently living all the apartments have a network socket on the wall and internet access is just provided via a few specific ISPs. I have never needed to use NAT as I used to when connected via a DSL router.

I just cant see why my internet (http) would stop working after it gives the error. Streaming radio, msn and bitTorrent still work I just can not access any websites. (To my own experience that would be a problem with the DNS)

NEW INFORMATION: I can add projects IF I use a web proxy in the connection settings. However it is very slow with the proxy, and doesnt seem to be too stable either.

I tried using the "connect to project" to the malaria project. I cut & pasted the url, & when I got to "new user", I couldn't answer "yes" ("no" had already been automatically entered & clicking "yes" got no response), only to have a "can't connect" message come back as "no account found" (duh...). Can I fix it? Or should I just try again next time I start up?

U already have a malaria account? I tried it but it told me that enrollment is closed at present.

Account creation is disabled at Malaria.
