Wouldn't it be a good idea to maintain a list of planned outages on server side, out of which those entries get sent to the client, which will occur within the next 7 days?

The client could then avoid server contacts while the server hardware, database or scheduler is undergoing a maintenance.

In the second step, the client could even adjust a tiny cache and increase it temporary in order to "survive" a longer outage.
