BOINC is a landmark piece of software that democratizes citizen science by greatly facilitating access and contribution to distributed computing projects, and imho only the arrival of quantum computing will eventually make it history (but I'm probably wrong on that). It is an humbling but fascinating experience to be able to contribute to scientific research, especially as a non-scientist/specialist !
