The rush to eliminate "copper" landline phone service has been going on in the US for at least 15 years now...

In many parts of the US the telco's have "decommissioned" the old copper infrastructure and laid next to it all fiber optics from the central office to the sub division / greater neighborhood area aka "Fiber to the node."

A 2010 order from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that mandated all POTS lines in the US be replaced with an alternative service by August 2, 2022. But that date has passed and some legacy telco's still offer copper landline but it's not cheap.

My subdivision which was built about 18 years ago is fiber to the neighborhood and the new subdivision going in down the road from here will be all fiber to the premise / home for both the Telco and "local" cable TV provider.

Originally the recessed fixture held four 48 inch tubes two ballasts and measures 2 foot by 4 foot by 4 inches and had a swinging diffuser cover to access the tubes. The replacement removes most of that and replaces it with led strip lights and their ballast and has a clip on diffuser. Yes I've seen the led tubes that are supposed to replace the fluorescent tubes, but they are more suitable for "shop" lighting type fixtures and not "office" type fixtures.

I wasn't suggesting those tubes, in fact the complete opposite, I was suggesting the whole fixture be removed. The LED strips come ready to take 240V, and support their own 2 grams of weight, you don't need any existing casing or electrics. And I'm pretty sure it's quicker to just remove the whole thing than modify it. Save on manpower.

Ah, I've never seen the point in that. LED lamps often tend to be their own fixture, as they don't need to be designed for easy replacement as they virtually never wear out. The ones I've seen are a complete unit with a connection for 240V. They just clip onto clips you screw into the ceiling and are exceedingly light weight.

One of my BOINC projects puts up a full page advertising splat every time I visit their massage boards, another site puts up video covering part of the content. My system payback was actually a lot faster than the original planning document outlined. Payback was in 4 years and 9 months. Paid off in August of 2018. The solar generation credit of 30% of the system value was deducted from my first two years tax bills. Plus I pay a lot more for power than you I suspect. My power tariff has ranged from $0.13 - $0.52 kWh depending on the season since I put the system in.
Generally I knocked about $175 off each month's power bill since installation. My annualized ROI was around 22%.

You could set the pref to no GPU work and see if you get anything for the CPU.

Well as usual, anytime you change a project's preferences to something other than originally set, or add a brand new project, you run afoul of BOINC's attempt to balance credit debt to other projects.

If you are sure you have allow cpu work set in your preferences . . . . and specifically for the location or venue you have assigned your host at Einstein, set sched_op_debug in logging Options and check the log after you make a scheduler request to Einstein to be sure you are actually asking for cpu work seconds.

OK, the thot plickens ...

Looking back the work request response has always been 'requesting work for CPU' (I hadn't noticed that) because it then says 'sending x new tasks' but they are GPU tasks NOT CPU tasks. For some reason it is sending GPU tasks in lieu of CPU tasks. To be clear, it is NOT requesting GPU work (I did turn on debug) but is requesting only CPU work because I have none, yet the scheduler is sending ONLY GPU work.

Anyone know how to give the E@H scheduler a kick in the butt? :(

Why are they speaking English backwards?

My hard drive was corrupted by a driver update. Unfortunately my Time Machine backup drive had gotten corrupted as well so I was unable to do a normal restore. I did a clean install of my OS (10.14.6) and a time machine restore of my data. I had lots of errors trying to restore apps so I manually restored the ones I needed. Since I reinstalled BOINC I get the error message "BOINC manager, BOINC ownership or permissions are not set properly; please reinstall BOINC (Error code -1005). The uninstall failed so I've reinstalled manually. I manually removed the app and library files and reinstalled, I've tried to fix permissions. Any idea what I'm missing?

There's only one other possibility I can think of: is either of our complainants running tasks which require a Virtual Machine?

If the VM is communicating directly with its project base (as I know LHC does), this would show up in a network traffic scan but not in BOINC.

I'm with the OP on this. The point of selecting subprojects is that you only want to run those, not any others, and if that's the only project you're running it should be obvious that you're ok with an idle machine. How many times in these and project forums have we seen people asking why they're getting work that they didn't select? Most of time it's because they overlooked the "accept other work" checkbox, which is easy to miss if you're not aware of it. Frankly I'd be fine with the "accept other work" going away completely. If you're worried about idle machines the sensible thing to do is select everything.

There were thunderstorms in the neighborhood of the launch platform and therefore if the drone ship was relaying its signals via the Kennedy Space Center, it's very well possible lightning took down the feed for a while. Where technology is concerned things will go wrong at the weirdest of times. Doesn't mean they hide something or that there's need for a conspiracy.

They've had that issue before, basically the camera gets knocked off air due to noise and vibration levels and they have to remote onto another camera (after searching through the other camera feeds until they find one that works)

If you look at the server lists for main & Beta, apart from the server names there is one big difference - Beta lacks the SETI@Home science database. Beta has been used to test/develop new server code as well as the applications, but those have always either been replicas of, or sub-sets of the main database.

Virtualbox wasn't designed to have BOINC control it in such a fashion. You will also find if you pause BOINC that virtualbox does not pause.

When I pause Boinc, the CPU stops completely, I just paused a 24 core machine in Boinc, 6 of the cores running LHC Theory tasks under Vbox. The CPU usage went to zero almost immediately.

Also you will find vitrualbox uses all your cores. Remember it is an O/S.

Not sure what you mean by that. It uses what Boinc expects it to. LHC Theory uses 1 core per task/VM. LHC Atlas uses up to 8, depending on my settings, but this is displayed in Boinc, Boinc knows how many cores are allocated to that task.

Beta has NEVER fed data into the main science database, despite what some people have thought and said. Much of the work it ran was either a standard set of data, or re-badged completed data, and it is this that may have caused the confusion.

Whenever I shut down Windows 10, and Virtualbox is in use (eg an LHC task), Windows says "Virtualbox has active connections". I can force it to stop, but if it's a remote computer this is annoying or very difficult to do, and it doesn't seem right to force stop a running project. If I wait, Windows eventually gives up and goes back to the desktop. Sometimes if I try to shut down again, it works, but sometimes I get the same error message again. I've done a Google search and this seems to have been a problem for years. Is this a Virtualbox problem, a Windows 10 problem, a Boinc problem, or an LHC problem?

I've got carpet here and I've never zapped a thing. Never felt a shock myself either. I never bothered with those anti-static straps, I used to just touch an earthed computer case first, now I don't even bother with that. Modern stuff has diode protection from static.

This makes sense in a weird way. It is the futures market. Some months ago you promised to buy some oil at a fixed price hoping the market price would be higher than the price you promised. Unfortunately the world demand for oil dropped big time due to the lack of demand because of the pandemic
. Oil companies stored as much as they had room for but now the storage is full. Tuesday is the due date for these futures. so you are going to be stuck with cheap oil but no place to put it so you pay someone to take it, hence a negative price.

Stopping people from eating meat from dodgy markets is a lot nicer of a change to make than preventing tourism. It doesn't matter if you can't prove it and can't hold them responsible, you can still make them not do it again.

If there was not unrestricted air travel then whatever happend anywhere would not spread with the speed this has. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of air travel and was planning to visit the US next year and realised at my age that opportunity has now gone.

No country will be able to hold a county like China "Responsible" and if any legal or otherwise measures were tried how long to the think the arguing would go on.

Our government is looking into one or two apps that everyone with a smartphone is obligated to install, with which they can track our every movement under the guise that if we come into contact with someone who will fall ill of corona, that they can send everyone who has been in the neighborhood of this person a message that they should now go into self-isolation. However, by default I have location on my phone turned off except when using it as a satnav. I also switch the phone off before leaving home while travelling and when I don't want to be antisocial and interrupt time with others, e.g. at work. If people are desperate to contact me they can leave a message for mobile or landline. They would not be able to make me keep the thing switched on in order for the app to work.

Rob actually each beer is brewed to be served at a specific temp. If you want nit pick they also should be served in specific shapes of glass which is partly responsible for how bid the head is. The bigger the head less co2. The CO2 concentration effects the acidity which has a huge bearing on the taste.

Back in the windows nt days, we were able to crack 12 digit passwords in a matter of minutes, on older hardware (Pentium 166Mhz), with a DVD containing 3-4Gb of passwords (rainbow tables).

If back then it took only 2 minutes to crack a password, it'll take mere few seconds to crack them using 4000+ core GPUs.

Also, the generation of 2-4 GB of rainbow tables took nearly a year.

With current hardware, and an optimized algorithm, 100GB Blu-ray discs filled with rainbow tables can be generated in the same amount of time. Meaning, once the table is out in the open, even 15 digit passwords containing asci characters (letters, numbers, capital letters, symbols and spaces), can be hacked in a matter of minutes.

Doesn't this require you to try millions of times to log in? The server should notice this is a hacking attempt and lock you out.

No. It takes special equipment to detect FRB's and the Seti observatories do not have such.

Yes ape. With only two projects you won't notice. With a dozen and one doesn't have work long term then the work fetch will go ape. It will try and try to get work which isn't there, when it fails it will get the smallest it can from another project just so the machine isn't idle. Remember it is trying to level the work - FLOPS - to the preferences you have set. It expects there to be work next time it fetches and it wants to keep room for it and with a large deficit it will not fill the cache with work from other projects. You can look at the work fetch priority in the advanced manager by getting the project properties.

Not sure why it would be more likely to go ape with a dozen projects. With two, it tries to get it from the one that's been offline, but when it fails, it fills my cache from the other one. Wouldn't it do the same from one or more of your other 11? I have my Boinc set to 1+1 days of cache - maybe that might make a difference for yours? Common sense would dictate it would get 1 day of work from the low priority ones if it had to, but 2 days from the high priority one. But then common sense doesn't always prevail, Boinc does some weird things sometimes.

In all the projects I use, there's "run only the selected applications" in the preferences. I can't find any explanation as to what this would do if you deselected all of them. Would it allow all to run, or none?

I just tried it on Amicable numbers, and it automatically reselected them all, after stating "all applications" in the non-editing screen of the preferences.

So not sure what would happen if a new application was brought out - would it default to being ticked? What I'm trying to do is tell it to run any application the project wants, including future ones.

It is called a one way hash and salt. Math. You put in a number, your password converted to a number, and it spits out a different number. Done right there is no way to put the result number in and backtrack to the password. Hackers get the hash file and brute force build up what each password was.

So is it possible to create such a system which cannot be brute forced cracked? Or would take more power than is available in current computers?

I do know one of my older passwords was found out from somewhere, because I occasionally get requests by email for me to pay somebody a few grand in bitcoins so they don't tell the world I watch porn or something. And they quote a password I used several years ago.

Surely, a website/forum/whatever can store passwords in some kind of secure form so they can't just be read when hacked? Some way the server can check I entered the right password but it doesn't actually know what it is?

And I assume the Google one is better, as I assume it's checking the email address AND password, whereas your link only checks the email address. It said I had been compromised, but it didn't tell me what password was used, so I have no idea if I have to change it again or not. Can I change a setting at my end to make Boinc only report tasks every 15 minutes? With Milkyway, they seem to have set it so they only send me new work if I haven't contacted the project in 10 minutes. I assume the admins have done this to reduce server load. I find it absurd that my Boinc client is reporting 3 tasks as completed every 2 minutes after having downloaded a block of 600. This seems to be adding unnecessary server load. It also means it runs out of work and sits idle for a while after each 600.

I was wondering if seti was going to have a Tuesday maintenance shutdown, and I thought that maybe not since it has been crazy in Berkeley with power outages, fire and smoke. I then thought that this is exactly the time you want a good backup.

I'm ready to cheer and toast a good backup and maintenance, and then whatever ritual is needed to ensure the system comes back online.

It is Saturday on the upper left coast and with the Sunday issue apparently fixed I ask what will we do for fun on Sunday?
