I am running Linux Fedora 10 kernel 2.6.37.29, I used yum as root to download and install BOINC. I clicked on the BOINC Manager entry in Systems Tools as a user and it tries to connect to some web site but fails with the "cannot connect to the core client" error.

What is wrong? I was never asked for an email address or anything, I assume because the application was never able to connect to some place on the web.

It doesn't try to connect to a website. BOINC consists of two parts, the core client (CC) and the BOINC manager (BM). They communicate via localhost.

I'm no unix user, but I think it's essential that you start the manager from the directory (folder) where the client has been started. And make sure to be in the right user group.
