Hello, Im looking to build/Run Boinc on an Itanium 2 machine. Now, I am new to the IA64 thing. I know I need an OS that supports the cpus.

What OS supports this? I currently have Vista 64 on my Xeon box. That OS wont work with Itaniums correct?
Windows server 2008 will fit the bill? Also, What Boinc client is needed to run on the OS I install. Thank you for your time.

Berkeley provides BOINC client/manager binaries for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. There are third party builds for other OSes.

Most projects provide science apps for the three major platforms. Any other OSes are usually not supported out of the box and rely on third parties to compile and distribute them.

HPUX, Linux, Windows 2003 Itanium Edition, OpenVMS are officaly supported by HP on the HP IA64. So far I know support the other vendors Linux and Windows IA64 edition on there systems. - For Windows you will need a special IA64 edition. - Vista would not work, because it's only for the x86/x64 architecture.
FreeBSD and NetBSD has also ports for IA64.

BOINC client and SETI@home application binaries are available for HPUX and Linux IA64 on my homepage http://www.dotsch.de/boinc and http://www.dotsch.de/seti.
SIMAP also supports HPUX and Linux on IA64. Binaries are avialable on the SIMAP homepage http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/appdownloads.php
So far I know are HPUX and Linux the only platforms for which a BOINC client and science applications are avaialable.

I service alot of server room A/C systems and I run in to alot of decomishioned computers setting way side of the room. When I see one I like I ask the IT manger if they would sell it. Usually,I can get them at a great price. Minus ram and HDDs. Otherwise I can't afford it lol.
