Message 45143 - Posted: 5 Aug 2012, 0:24:43 UTC

hello,

i've used BOINC for years now on several mac os x systems for stuff like the seti@home project, the world community grid, rosetta, etc.

i now have a mid-2010 27-inch iMac with a intel quad core i7 processor at 2.8 GHz, and have recently upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. i also updated to BOINC 7.0.31 for Mac OS X.

now each time i try and start the BOINC manager, i get this dialogue —

“BOINC Manager
You're currently not authorized to manage the client.

To run BOINC is this user, please:
reinstall BOINC answering "yes" to the question about non--administrative users
or
contact your administrator to add you to the ‘boinc_master’ user group.”

when i click “OK” on that dialogue, BOINC Manager quits. any subsequent attempt to start-up BOINC Manager gets the same result, every time, even after several restarts of the system.

and... all the information it says to try in that dialogue is erroneous. first, i am an administrator user on this iMac, in fact, i'm the only user on it. next, the choice/offer to install as a administrative or non-administrative user never comes up in the install dialogues, and i've tried reinstalling a couple of times now to try and find them. also, as i am the only user and it's a small home office network, there is no other ‘administrator’ to add me to a ‘boinc_master’ group, and as i'm already an administrator, isn't it unnecessary for me to do this? where would i do it, in any case? in the get info dialogue for the application? where?

the dialogue is erroneous and convoluted and unhelpful, at best.

i just would like to be able to use my BOINC Manager project screen saver again, please, just like before the upgrade. please advise at your earliest convenience. thank you in advance.

best,

next, the choice/offer to install as a administrative or non-administrative user never comes up in the install dialogues, and i've tried reinstalling a couple of times now to try and find them.

I think they refer to the option 'Allow all users to control BOINC' which you can check/uncheck during the install.

There are some updates for Mac in the Development BOINC 7.0.32 but I don't know if they apply to your problem:

The developer asks that you run the uninstaller first (can be found in the Extras folder) and then run the 7.0.31 installer again. If that doesn't fix it, please report.

Give a lot more information. I don't even know what you mean with what you say. Normally when you remove any software of course it won't (further) work, until you install the newer version. Is that what you did?

Also, specifically, which previous BOINC version?
Which new BOINC version?
Which operating system?

Do know that we aren't looking over your shoulder, see what you do. You will have to tell us, in detail, what you did, what errors if any you saw etc.

i have downloaded the latest version and install it before removing old version.
i had the message that talk about privileges.
after search on the forum i see that it's recommanded to remove old version before installing the new one.

You say "latest version", but which version number is that? It'll say that in the installer name. If this isn't 7.0.31, then please try with that version first. If need be, go to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php and download it from there.

The BOINC developer for the Mac is subscribed to this thread, so he'll get all this information. And if need be, he'll add his own questions.

In the mean time, try to get a log from the installer. The developer will be interested in getting that. To get the installation log, do the following:

After launching the installer, select "Installer Log" from the Window menu, or type command-L. A log window will appear. In the top left corner of the log window, select "Show all logs" or type command-3.

When the installation is finished, but before clicking Close or Restart, click on the Save icon in the top right corner of the log window to write the log to a file, which can then be emailed or copied into a post or private message.

For the moment save the file locally and wait for the developer to decide how he wants you to treat the file.

Yes, please send us the full installer log. Without it we can't diagnose the problem. Since Mountain Lion is new and we have modified the BOINC installer for it, there may very well be a problem with the BOINC installer, with Mountain Lion, or both.

You can post the installer log here, or if you prefer, send it to me in a private message.

Thanks in advance for your help.

hello, finally it work...

after the first installation when i had the message, i have searched where can come the problem.
i didn't find a boinc_manager entry in the /etc/group file and add one manually... (i work as unix system admin)
i add have added the group in the "user and group" pref for all my users.

this morning, i have deinstall the version, deleted all boinc related files and removed the entry in the /etc/group.
after a reinstall and a reboot it work.
just have the problem of grey screen after reboot (but probably not linked)
sorry for the inconvenience

I'm also getting this message. I'm using the current installer, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've also tried adding Boinc_master and Boinc_project to Sharing & Permissions. I haven't used any previous versions of BOINC. I've got the installer log and a crash report if that information would help.

When you say "current version" I need to know the version number. Also, are you running OS 10.8 Mountain Lion?

Thanks.

I don't know if this helps but because I've got access to a copy of Server tools for Mac I was able to add myself to the group boinc_master (got this suggestion from the earlier post, but I didn't know how to add myself via Terminal). Now the error pops up:
BOINC ownership or permissions are not set properly; please reinstall BOINC.

I finally got it to work by adding boinc_master and boinc_project to the two groups of the same name. However, I've got several other computers that I'd like to add BOINC to. Is there a way to automate this process w/o having to install server tools on each computer?

Thank you for sending me the installer log. I found the problem: normally, OS X creates a "short user name" from your "full user name" by eliminating any spaces, but for some reason your short user name is identical to your full user name, including a space. The short user name is used to create the user's folder. You will notice that your user folder name (in the /Users/ directory) has a space, whereas Lara's does not. Perhaps this is a change in Mountain Lion.

If the other computers don't have any spaces in any short user names, then the standard BOINC installer version 7.0.31 should work. You should never need to use Server tools to install BOINC.

In the next day or two, I will build a special test version of the installer for you to try which should fix the problem. I would appreciate it very much if you would try it and let me know if it solves your problem..

Of course, send me the installer and I'll test it out on one of my other machines.

This will only proof anything if you have "spaces in any short user names"
If you don't have spaces - the older (current) BOINC installer will work (as posted by Charlie Fenton)

I set up my other Mac using migration assistant. This would migrate the paths too, no?

I'm not sure I understand your question, but if you copied all users and applications from a Mac that is successfully running BOINC then the new Mac should also successfully run BOINC without any further effort. However, if you also copied the BOINC Data folder, then the two Macs will be duplicating efforts by working on the same tasks, which you don't want.

After many hours of work, I have created the special trial installer and uninstaller I would like you to test. You can get them here. As BilBg pointed out, your results will be useful to me only if you run it on a system that has your original problem, that is one with a space character in the short user name.

The easiest way to determine if you have a space character in the short user name is to run the Terminal application (at /Applications/Utilities/terminal) and type:
env
followed by a return. Then look at the values for USER and LOGNAME. If your Full User Name is Harry Smith you will see either something like this (though not on adjacent lines):
USER=harrysmith
LOGNAME=harrysmith

or something like this:
USER=Harry Smith
LOGNAME=Harry Smith

If you see the first case, then there is no space in the short user name and no point running the test. If you see the second case, then please do the following:
(1) Run the Uninstall BOINC utility application in the Extras folder of the special test version you downloaded.
(2) Run the BOINC Installer from the special test version, creating the installer log as before with "Show all logs" selected.
If the test installer fixes the problem, then BOINC should run successfully after the system restart (though it may take a few minutes before it runs.) You should not need to run Server Tools or anything else for BOINC to run.

Please send me the installer log in any case (in a private message) and be sure to tell me whether the installation succeeded.

Thanks in advance for your help.
