6.13 will become 7 any day now, but it's far from stable. It is stable enough to go from alpha to beta test, but still not stable enough to go to stable release. We've had several crashes of the client with 6.13.10, so please make sure you update to the next 6.13 when it's available, or to the first Boinc 7 when it surfaces.

I'm still seeing this problem as of 7.0.8 on Snow Leopard.

Why does the 7.x installer require a reboot?

We suspect that one of the projects may be creating its files in a way that does not set up permissions correctly. Please tell me:
(1) What is the error code in the error message when BOINC tells you to reinstall.
(2) Which projects are you running?

When I install 6.12.35, I get:

"Your are currently not authorized to manage the client. To run BOINC as this user, please: - reinstall BOINC answering "Yes" to the question about non-administrative users or - contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_master' user group."

My memory says that I get the same message from 7.0.8, but I can't afford the reboot to replicate this for your right now.

BTW, I was not asked any question about allowing non-administrative users, and my username is definitely in the boinc_master group. Yes, I'm an administrator for my laptop. ;-)

My projects are: Seti@Home, PrimeGrid, Einstein@Home, Collatz Conjecture, & Milkyway@home

Back to 6.10.58...

Hi Charlie,

I'm running quite a few iMacs with Lion and not seeing any issues like this but out of interest I browsed through the install log posted by Mizo back on Oct 13 2011. This may be totally not relevant but I happened to notice the following lines as I looked through:
....
Oct 14 00:16:24 Martin-Siljedals-Mac-Pro Installer[325]: Env: HOME=/Users/martinsiljedal 1
Oct 14 00:16:24 Martin-Siljedals-Mac-Pro Installer[325]: Env: USER=martinsiljedal
Oct 14 00:16:24 Martin-Siljedals-Mac-Pro Installer[325]: Env: LOGNAME=martinsiljedal
....
....
Oct 14 00:17:05 Martin-Siljedals-Mac-Pro installd[334]: ./postupgrade: [1] Checking user .
Oct 14 00:17:05 Martin-Siljedals-Mac-Pro installd[334]: ./postupgrade: [1] Checking user ..
Oct 14 00:17:05 Martin-Siljedals-Mac-Pro installd[334]: ./postupgrade: [1] Checking user .localized
Oct 14 00:17:05 Martin-Siljedals-Mac-Pro installd[334]: ./postupgrade: [1] Checking user martinsiljedal 1
Oct 14 00:17:05 Martin-Siljedals-Mac-Pro installd[334]: ./postupgrade: [1] martinsiljedal 1 not in getpwnam data base
....

The HOME directory looks good but the environment variables for USER and LOGNAME don't have the " 1" on the end. Is this anything to do with the problem? The later checks seem to be looking for a user with the " 1" in the name.

I'm guessing this is it and it got fixed with the new installer in 6.13.8 since Mizo had success with that. Is it possible that Tony Li has some quirky user name that is causing a similar problem? Please ignore if I'm off track here.

I have access to about a dozen iMacs from late 2009 right up to current. They are all at Lion 10.7.2 and they are all running BOINC 6.12.35 with Einstein as the only project. I upgraded one to 7.0.11 in order to have a platform for testing the OpenCL app at Einstein. Before testing that app, I thought I'd give the Collatz app a spin because of its lower memory requirements.

The machine has an ATI HD 4670 and OS X reports it as having 256MB RAM. BOINC 7.0.11 reports it as having 512MB. The machine immediately locks up if I try to run the Collatz app.

If it's of any use to you, I'm quite happy to devote any of these iMacs to testing any aspect of the installer or of the latest BOINC clients. They are running in a workplace environment so I have to be a bit careful with what I do but so far, the users don't seem to be bothered with BOINC running in the background and I do have access 'after hours' to conduct tests.

Cheers,
Gary.

One difference in the installer is that the old installer stepped through the /Users directory assuming that its contents corresponded to the users on that computer. But I learned that this is not necessarily true, as in Mizo's case, so I asked Apple for a better way to get a list of the users and implemented that method in the new installer. The new installer also creates BOINC's private users and groups (boinc_master and boinc_project) differently, based on Apple's recommendations. The installer requires a restart after creating after creating boinc_master and boinc_project for the first time, or after changing them to the values recommended by Apple. Once they exist, future upgrades will not require a restart.

I assumed Tony Li was talking about a different issue here, but I may have been mistaken. He just said "I still have the problem" but did not specify exactly what that problem is. There have been reports of BOINC reporting permissions errors after a relaunch or system restart, and I thought that was his problem. But from his most recent post I see this was apparently not the case.

The machine has an ATI HD 4670 and OS X reports it as having 256MB RAM. BOINC 7.0.11 reports it as having 512MB. The machine immediately locks up if I try to run the Collatz app.

It is a known bug that OpenCL reports only 50% of the RAM for some ATI GPUs; we are working on the best way to deal with that. John Sonntag of Collatz is working with us on this.

If it helps, my username is 'tli'.

What else can I do to help debug this? Where would the installer log be located?

Hi Tony,
BTW, I was not asked any question about allowing non-administrative users

The installer will ask that only if your Mac is configured with non-admin users in addition to the admin users.

If it helps, my username is 'tli'.

What else can I do to help debug this? Where would the installer log be located?

First of all, which version of Mac OS X are you running?

I would like to ask you to try 7.0.8 again. I have made major changes to the way the installer sets up the users and groups to solve problems like yours with the earlier versions of BOINC. You may want to continue running 7.0.8 if it works for you, even though it is an alpha test release, until the official public version BOINC 7.0.x release. If 7.0.8 works for you, then just let me know and we are done.

WARNING: If you run version 7.x.x, it will change the format of your data to one incompatible with the 6.12 or earlier series. If you then revert to 6.12.x or earlier, all your projects will be reset, causing you to lose all incomplete or unreported work. The projects will resend you the lost tasks, but you will start crunching them from the beginning again. To prevent this from happening, back up your BOINC Data folder before upgrading to 7.x.x, and restore it before downgrading to 6.12.x.

When you run the BOINC installer, please generate and save the installer log as follows:
[1] As soon as the first installer window appears ("Welcome to the BOINC Manager installer"), select "Installer Log" from the Installer's "Window" menu, or type command-L.
[2] In the new Log window which appears, select "Show all logs" in the Log window's top left corner, or type command-3.
[3] Run the installer.
[4 Before clicking on the Close or Restart button at the end of the install, click on the Save icon in the Log window's top right corner to save the log to a file.

If version 7.0.8 does not solve your problem, please do the following:
To confirm that the users and groups are set up properly, please run the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application and enter the following:
dscl . -read /Groups/admin GroupMembership
dscl . -read /Groups/boinc_master
dscl . -read /Groups/boinc_project
dscl . -read /users/boinc_master PrimaryGroupID
dscl . -read /users/boinc_project PrimaryGroupID

Then save the results to a file by selecting "Export text as..." from Terminal's Shell menu.

Please either post the installer log and the results from Terminal here, or send them to me in a private message if you prefer.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers,
--Charlie

I'm having the same problem ... not authorized - same window - not authorized to manage client, etc.. I'm running Lion 10.7.3 and have been running WCG for a long time. I had to reboot for another reason and when I did, I got the window saying reinstall Boinc. but I can't. I've tried several times, v6.12.35, over and over, with the same error code and window.

Has this been resolved yet? I meant to mention that it's the first time I've done an install that triggered and opened Pacifist!

Donna, can you please try BOINC 7.0.18 available from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php and see if that fares better? If not, please let me know ASAP and I'll forward your plight to the developers.

I apologize for not responding. Forgot I posted here and I've been in frequent contact with WCG tech support to no avail. I have uninstalled, reinstalled every version, including most recently 7.0.20 with the same result …. not authorized to manage this client. These are the files I captured.

Also, for the first time, when I closed the window saying I wasn't authorized, BOINC tried to relaunch and I got this … it's partial:

Hi Donna,

I had not heard of Pacifist before. I found Pacifist on the web and learned it is an extraction tool for compressed files which can sometimes be used instead of the standard installer. If Pacifist is changing file permissions based on what is in the package, that may be the cause of your problems

The permissions in the installer package are not what BOINC requires. The BOINC installer is quite complex and involves many steps before and after extracting the files from the package. After the installer extracts the files (using the Mac's standard built-in file extraction tools), it runs a post-install script and post-install application which then set the correct file ownerships and permissions to what BOINC requires. If Pacifist is changing them again, BOINC won't run.

The BOINC installer also creates two non-login role accounts boinc_master and boinc_project, and two new groups also named boinc_master and boinc_project. It then adds all administrator users of the Mac to these groups (and optionally non-admin users as well.)

The message "You currently are not authorized to manage the client" generally means that the user has not been added to the boinc_master group. If you are using Pacifist to install BOINC, this is almost certainly your problem. I downloaded Pacifist, and the FAQ that comes with it says:
"Pacifist, in its present form, is not a complete replacement for the Installer. For example, it does not run the pre-install or post-install scripts of a package. This has several implications - on one hand, it can make installation safer, since a poorly written shell script can cause damage to your files. On the other hand, there is the possibility that there could be something important that the shell script does that is necessary for a complete install to be successful."

I don't know if this is the problem, but it is worth checking.

If you are installing using the standard BOINC installer and Pacifist is not involved, let me know and I will suggest some other things to try.

Cheers,
--Charlie

Hi again, Donna,

In case Pacifist is not the cause of your problem, I have created a small diagnostic shell script to help me analyze your situation. Please download this file CheckGroupMemberShellScript.sh. You should be able to just double-click on it and it should automatically launch the Mac's Terminal utility application.

If that doesn't work (because the script's permissions were lost), then you can run it as follows: open the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application and type "sh" followed by a space, drag CheckGroupMemberShellScript.sh from the Finder onto the Terminal window, and press the return key.

This script will write a file to your home directory named BOINC_results.txt. Please copy the contents of this text file into a private message to me (using the Send Message button to the left of this post.)

Be sure to run the script from the same login account that you use when trying to run BOINC. Also, please verify that the "RealName" listed in the BOINC_results.txt file matches the name on your login account. The "LOGNAME" and "whoami" results should match the short user name associated with your login account.

Thanks for your persistence, and for your help in figuring this out.

Cheers,
--Charlie

Charlie-
BOINC tech support forwarded my attempts and results to World Community Grid tech support and I heard back from them today. They suspected Pacifist and had me remove it. When I moved the Pacifist folder out of Utilities to the desktop and installed BOINC 6.12.35 for the millionth time, it looked like installs are supposed to, went smoothly, and now works great.

That resolves the issue when Pacifist auto-launches but, unfortunately, not for other instances.

Hi Donna,

I'm glad that fixed it, and thanks for letting me know. But I'm unclear what you mean by "not for other instances." Would you be kind enough to elaborate on what is still not working?

Cheers,

I had the same error dialog listed in the first post when installing the 6.12.35 client over a much older client (6.10.x I think). During the installation process I was never asked about allowing non-admin users to run the app. I then downloaded the 7.0.20 version, but I first uninstalled the prior version, including removing my old Boinc Data folder and my prefs file. I then installed the new version, but it too did not ask me about non-admin permissions. After the required reboot however, I was happy to find that Boinc Manager was installed and running.

It claims to be downloading work, but in the Advanced View window it shows about 10 progress bars and none of them are moving. I'm going to let it run for a while to see if anything happens and then report back.

I'm running 10.7.3 on a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
