I've been having problems with a T61 Thinkpad freezing up, no response to keyboard or mouse. It often happens in the midst of using my system. I've also noticed that my screen saver was never activating. (I am not using the BOINC screen saver, just the default Win XP SP2 screen saver.) Two days ago I discovered that if I change my BOINC to use only 40% CPU the screen saver now works. Also I haven't had a system freeze since then. However I've gone much more than two days without a freeze so I can't say for sure BOINC had anything to do with my freezes. Is there any experience in this community to indicate that BOINC may be responsible for my T61 freezing?

Thanks, Pete

Ah, all from WCG? How much RAM do you have? Is it enough for those projects? (WCG should have system requirements on their website).

How much RAM do you have?

I have 2G of RAM so it looks like I have more than enough. (And I have a lot of free disk space.)
Does this help?

I don't have the Away Manager installed. I have the Maintenance Manager (replacement for Away Manager) installed but it's not scheduled to do anything.

In case anyone is curious Maintenance Manager is a way to schedule (daily, weekly, monthly) disk defrags and other tasks like anti-virus scans, disk cleanup or backup.

Freezing sounds for me that your CPU could have a heating problem.
Excluding the boinc-folder from av-scan or any other of such things is strongly recommended.

No heating problem that I can see. The CPU runs in the high 80s C.

I got a loaner T61 and interchanged the memory and no freezes since Sunday (and am running BOINC at 100%). Assuming that this was an indication of a bad memory module I started running memtest86+ 2.0 on the loaner T61 with the memory from my machine and it's been running without failure all day. Not sure what to do next. Are there other diagnostics I should be running?

Hi there,

I'm having a freeze problem with my T61 thnkpad I bought 8 months ago. I recently did a software update using the Lenovo System updater and installed quite a few items. I can't recall all of them. After the updates and re-start my system froze dead, no mouse, touchpad or keys working. I can't Ctrl-Alt-Del and all i could do was drop the hammer. It has now come to a point now where it freezes on the log-in screen before I type my name! In safe mode I have done all the PC-Doctor checks and a hard drive diagnostic and found no problems. I'm not sure what to do. I'm typing this out on my old trusty T43. Is this s common problem? Is there anyone who can help?
Would be much appreciated.

What does IBM say about it? Does it still have warranty?
You could try to uninstall the updates one by one in Safe Mode until it starts responding again, at least then you know which one is the culprit.

I run SETI and WCG presently on a T61p. For a brief period, I added Rosetta to my project list. The BOINC processes would freeze up with Rosetta going. When I detached Rosetta, I had no further problems.

Have you tried running different projects?
