Hello folks, I have spent the last three years very learning about how to operate these volunteer computing projects and have managed to develop both Hydrogen@Home and DrugDiscovery@Home. Both of these projects are highly idealistic yet seem short on reaching either goals. Our major barrier seems finding the reliable sources of funding that can keep these projects running effectively.
You see, developing a project is more and more looking like a full time job and I was unemployed for about 6 months. In the US, we have witnessed the highest unemployment in over 6 decades. So right now I'm clinging onto my job and dedicating the majority of my time to it.
What I have failed miserably at is convincing those people with money that the key to getting us out of a slump is to gamble away their money on supporting innovative research efforts.
One of the main fundamental questions is how these projects should be funded? If you make a discovery through a volunteer computing system, can their be intellectual property that gets monetized by some entity. By whom? If we got a bunch of venture capitalists to invest in a project, they are going to want their cut. Grant funding is just so competitive that I cannot imagine ever winning one.
I'm looking for answers. I started working on these projects with good intentions, but I sure cannot see a way to success if I cannot make a full time job out of it. |
