Berkeley Open Learning Technology (Bolt)

Bolt is a toolkit for web-based teaching and training. Its main features:

  • It provides tools for statistically measuring and comparing the effectiveness of lessons, relative both to the entire student population and to subgroups based on demographics and other factors.
  • It provides tools for making courses 'adaptive', i.e. the content varies according to student characteristics.
  • It is based on PHP, a simple but powerful scripting language. However, any existing Web content may be used, including Flash, video, etc.

Thus, Bolt is designed for educational contexts in which there is a constant arrival of diverse students, and in which course developers want to continually analyze and improve the effectiveness of the teaching materials.
