Help publicize BOINC, BOINC-based projects, and volunteer computing

Publicizing BOINC and BOINC-based projects in the mass media will increase the number of BOINC volunteers, the amount of computing power available to BOINC-based projects, and the amount of science they get done.

There are various media that could effectively publicize BOINC. For now we are concentrating on magazines related to computing and/or science. You can help this publicity effort by communicating (by mail, email, or phone) with these magazines.

Magazines

Please scan the following list of magazines, and select magazines in your country. Add any magazines that are not already listed. Wikipedia has a good list of computer magazines. You can find more info about many of these magazines there.

Consider sending each magazine either:

  • a letter to their "Letters to the Editor" department describing BOINC and urging readers to participate.
  • a letter to their editor, encouraging him/her to run a story on BOINC, or to include BOINC on any CD/DVD that they include with their magazine, or to "cross-promote" with BOINC. Possible forms of cross-promotion include having them develop a "private label" version of the BOINC client with their logo, creating teams on all the BOINC projects, and so on. Please have the magazines contact David Anderson, and/or the leaders of BOINC-based projects, for info.

If the magazine has Web-based forums, join them and post about BOINC in the appropriate forum.

If you contact a magazine, please add a note to this web page (below the magazine's entry in the list below), saying what you did and the date. This will reduce duplication of effort.

Consider including the following points in your letter or forum posting:

  • Volunteer computing is not just SETI and prime numbers any more; the science projects are doing research in a wide range of areas, from medicine to climate change.
  • With BOINC, you're not locked in to one project. You can run as many as you want, and change whenever you want. You see your credit totals all in one place.
  • BOINC gives you extensive control over when and how your computer is used, including CPU throttling and day-of-week preferences.
  • BOINC is open source, and many of the projects' applications are too. It's possible (and encouraged) for volunteers to optimize applications for specific architectures.
  • Each BOINC-based project has a global community of volunteers, with whom you can communicate using message boards, profiles, and private messages.
