1) Message boards : News : Web site changes

Quite interesting the homepage claims there are about thirty BOINC-projects. I'm running fourty-four, and there are more of them. Has this number been there for a longer time, or has anybody cut something off to make BOINC seem less attractive? ^^ And is it possible that Science United has more space on the page than BOINC? - - - - - I don't see the fun in participating anonymously at some projects I don't know anything about. Comparing credits and fighting in challenges is a lot of the fun I'm having around BOINC. The Formula is quite nice in that respect as are Pentathlon and the annually WCG-crunching. In fact, this stuff is what makes me run more computers than I personally need - just for BOINC! Meeting people and discussing BOINC-related and -unrelated topics in forums or real-life is quite nice as well. There are people who take the trouble to register an account on a forum just to ask if something is not ok with a special project, sub-project or work-unit because their computers are acting up. Additionally, some projects will run a lot more efficiently if tweaked properly. So, with SU, will there be automagically created config-files to make machines run safe - and run projects at their best? I doubt it. Well, no advantages for me. Rather a lot of drawbacks. Count me out, please. |
2) Message boards : BOINC Manager : If a project manager is set, I'd prefer other preferences should not be loaded

Hi. I've been using Boinc for quite a while now on different machines. I really like the possibility to set a project manager to control things from anywhere and not have to do it from home. Unfortunately Boinc still allows projects to fiddle with the preferences despite this. This is just disturbing. When I set up preferences to use a certain amount of memory on a machine and some project preferences override this with a smaller value, projects that I want to run won't run anymore. When vbox applications take stopping badly they might crash. Properly adjusted preferences can prevent this. Loading unfit preferences might cause a crash, hours of work might be destroyed (on RNA World we're talking about months, not hours btw.), users will be frustrated and maybe stop using Boinc. If GPU on/off settings are changed a machine will not be responsive anymore if you're unlucky. Furthermore my MacBook Pro has issues with its graphics card. If it gets stopped because the setting is changed to 'don't use GPU while machine is in use' and I touch a key it freezes. This is not disturbing, this is a reason to ban Boinc from it which I don't want, or to not run GPU projects. I suggest that if a project manager is used only preferences loaded by the manager will be used. That way the above-mentioned things will not annoy users. A way to implement this might be the use of the the preferences override-file through the project manager. Thanks for reading. |
3) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Boinc Manager Mac doesn't use default buttons
Message 84070 Posted 28 Dec 2017 by gemini8 |
Hi there. I'm running Boinc 7.8.4 (and other versions) on El Capitan. The Boinc Manager does not use default keys as usual on Macs. If you define a default button, pressing [enter] should activate it while [escape] should cancel. When I open the 'Boinc Diagnosemeldungen einstellen'-window, 'abbrechen' (cancel) is defined as default, but pressing [enter] does nothing. Instead [escape] closes it. This is quite Mac-unlike. Usually the default button should be [OK], activated by pressing [enter] with [escape] activating [Cancel]. The preferences settings are similar: When I open them to have a look, [enter] should work on [OK]. It doesn't unless I tick an input field. It shouldn't be active if it can't be used by pressing [enter]. Please look into this. Thanks. |
4) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Boinc Manager Mac doesn't react to scrolling with keys
Message 84069 Posted 28 Dec 2017 by gemini8 |
Hi. I'm using Boinc 7.8.4 on a Mac Mini (and other devices) running El Capitan. The Boinc Manager does not do anything when I try to scroll with the cursor- or page_up/page_down-keys. On the Mac Mini this is quite annoying as I use a one-button-mouse. On the other devices I didn't notice this as I'm using trackpads there and my personal behaviour regarding scrolling is different. Please fix this. Thanks. |
