It was indeed a Rosetta problem that just happened to show up just as I upgraded. Rosetta@home has fixed it now.
Thank you,

I just upgraded to BOINC 7.0.28 and now when Rosetta, (minirosetta 3.43) runs a window pops up on my screen. If I close it it just comes back. The only options are to minimize it or suspend work for the project. This is unacceptable. I share my computer with BOINC but I am not going to let it take over.

There's a bug in the master URL comparison.

The path part of the URL is case sensitive, that is correct.

The protocol/server/domain parts are not case sensitive!

Example :

http://Boinc.Berkeley.Edu/dev and http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev are equivalent

so BOINC should not whine about a wrong master URL.

Solution : lowercase all characters in the URLs up to the 3rd slash (or the end of the string) and then use them. That's faster and easier to handle than splitting the string and comparing the components separate.

DNS is not case sensitive, everything between :// and / is DNS.

No need to count. The number of posts in each thread is listed here

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_forum.php?id=6

It is interesting that you have to be outside the thread to count how many posts are in it. I suppose that is the nature of all forests, they have to be seen from the outside, from the inside you only see the trees.

Happy holidays,

(31 / 212) * 100 = 14.6%

Yay!

How do you know it is 31? Do you count them by hand??

Sorry for the confusion. I am not asking for help. I am trying to help you. I have never had a successful installation of the x64 version of BOINC. It goes though the normal install process but fails to start at the last step and I have to cancel the install and reinstall the .7 version which is not x64. I have no firewall running, and make no changes between the installations. I accept all defaults, select the service install and do not install the screensaver.

I have the 32 bit version of 5.10.20 running on another machine ( which has a 64 bit processor but a 32 bit operating system ) maybe I should put that on here. I am not going to jump through hoops trying to make buggy software work and I really don't care what version I am running. I will wait until I see a reccommended version higher than .21 before I try again.

Have a nice day,
David Stites

How did you install it? I mean, did you install it directly on that machine, on its hard drive, or through a network?

I installed it from my hard drive

Do you have permissions to run the service?

I already told you I do

On Windows 2000/XP machines, the Log On field can be checked by right-clicking the service and choosing Properties. Under the Log On tab, you can see which account the service logs on as.

Did you by chance rename the boinc.exe?

I renamed nothing

Is the RPC service enabled on your machine? The BOINC service depends on the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service being enabled.

Yes, it is. Does 5.10.21 have different requirements than 5.10.7?

It has the same problem as .20 and .13.

"Error 1920,check to make sure you have permissions to install a service"

I check that by successfully reinstalling 5.10.7. This is on XP x64, an AMD Athlon x64 x2 3800+

Where would I lobby to get this changed back? Or at least give us a choice? I participate in one project in which its Resource Share and the length of time for processing a result (more than a day) will cause the Ready to Report status to always last 24 hours. In the second of the three projects I support it will occur frequently. That's two out of three, which is unacceptable. I thought there would be more activity in this thread, as other people would be as irritated as I, but that hasn't happened. Don't other people care about this?

I don't. My concept of helping is to let them tell me what they want me to do and then doing it. I don't try to tell them what or how.
12) Message boards : BOINC client : Can't install boinc in service mode (Message 12746)
Posted 26 Sep 2007 by David Stites
Post:
I've never used Boinc in the service mode, but I have read that it requires a real Administrator password - Blank password wont work.

I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable to explain a work around.

He wrote that he entered and re-entered his password. No mention of it being blank.
I am having the same issue (error 1920) now with version 5.10.19 (version 5.10.18 ran fine a few minutes ago - just prior to the newer one). To be sure I even rebooted the machine after the first attempt resulted in the same error message ...

The next thing I'll try is to rename the old directory but even if that works would I like to know what is causing the problem.

tia,
Roland

I have the same problem. I can't install 5.10.13 or 5.10.20. I am using 5.10.7. This is Windows XP x64 on an Athlonx64 x2 3800+.
Well, so much for theory! It failed just the same: after installing the service the attempt to start it failed with said error message: "Error 1920.Service BOINC (BOINC) failed to start system services." I will now disable Panda Titanium and retry.

I saw that 5.10.13 is now the recommended version for XP-x64 and XP. I downloaded the x64 version and installed it as a service. It failed to start. I am back to 5.10.7.

Have a nice day

Here it is a month later and the problem still exists, and there has been no response to this message. So much for trying to help.
