Just try to create a new thread. You'll see what I mean. You get a lot of these:

token FORUM_SUBMIT_NEW missing from language interface.
token FORUM_SUBMIT_NEW_TITLE missing from language interface.token FORUM_HTML_INFO missing from language interface.
token FORUM_MESSAGE missing from language interface.token FORUM_HTML_INFO missing from language interface.

Looks like something got checked in lumpy... Not that I need too many pointers when given two boxes to leak opinion somewhere, but...

I remember reading a thread somewhere about the implementation of a scheduler notice that announces "this project is down for maintenance". I just noticed my first one of these messages. Boy does it make a difference (I imagine even more so to Joe User who just switched over from... err... Screensaver Classic).

Kudos to the bugfixer!

It's a home machine that was once on my own domain but have since reverted back to a plain old workgroup.

Hrm... One wonders if some old group policies didn't get tattooed onto your machine.

I'd try this: Create a new test user from scratch on the machine. See if the screensaver problem persists. If that fixes things, I have a possible solution that may work for you.

Also, can you scan your Documents and Settings folder for anything with the .MAN extension? Make sure you're scanning hidden and system files, and just search for *.man.

Other possible culprits I can think of are login scripts or computer management applications that periodically "update" or refresh their settings in your registry.

Just shout back and let me know if any of that made any difference. Thanks!

4) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Unable to connect (Message 655)

Ok, my net is finally back up... My EXTERNAL modem decided to act up and I was unable to check my mail, or the message boards until now...

Neil, what happens if you go to the command line and type:

ping 127.0.0.1

You should get 4 Reply from... messages. If not, you have a reasonably serious problem with your OS or network card, or your firewall is planning to be a pain in the tail. Then, on the command line, try:

ping localhost

This will probably fail--if it doesn't, verify you're still having the problem with BOINC not connecting to localhost.

If you run a search on all files with hosts in the file name, you should get one or two. The hosts file works just like DNS, if you know what that is, but on a host level. Basically, the hosts file, like DNS is just a way to turn names (people friendly) into numbers/IP addresses (computer friendly). Make sure that both files have entries linking 127.0.0.1 to localhost (proper format for the Windows hosts file is IP address tab name).

If an antivirus, firewall, or antispyware program deleted the hosts file or deleted the localhost entry in the hosts file, you may see these problems... Shout back and let me know what you find out.

Hmmm, I am not seeing on 4.72 (OS-X) ... interesting ...

I think it has to do with the network being suspended. So when the net comes back up, uploads start. During this time, a trigger event is recognized telling the CC to report results. That's what generates the double tap.

It's a non-standard configuration for me, since I'm on a cable modem, but I'm wondering what the impact will be on the modem users out there.

Actually there is a bug in the 4.4x versions of the client that causes reporting immediately, it should delay until a trigger event.

I would just let BOINC do it's thing though. It should work itself out eventually.

Aha. I thought that was design behavior. Didn't realize it had already been marked as a bug.

BTW, I'm seeing this on 4.72. Haven't tried 5.1.x yet, since LHC won't support it, but hoping it's fixed in 5.2.

Thx, Keck.

I've updated to the 5.1.4 and have exactly the same problems. In fact, I don't know if it's even Boinc related anymore. I've tried to switch to other screensavers, leaving the password protect off and it never comes on and always reverts back to 60 minutes of timeout. It also never comes on after 60 minutes either. Something is directly interferring with the screensaver and I don't have a clue what it is.

Rob, is this a workplace computer that may be joined to a Windows domain, or a home PC?

If I suspend network on BOINC all day, when I allow network access again, the uploads begin uploading, the Work Fetcher starts fetching from LHC (but this may just affect the first project in the list). LHC gives me some stuff to download--usually just two results. Once the uploads are done (a second or two later), BOINC Manager automatically hits the LHC scheduler to report what it just uploaded. Which results in the RPC too Recent error and a backoff on more downloads from LHC. Work Fetcher then goes on to hit SETI (project #2 in the list), DL a slew of work, and no backoff (since all the uploads complete while BOINC double-taps the LHC scheduler. After the 58-second backoff from LHC, the local cache is full of Seti results, so no need to grab any LHC work.

I know the auto-connect after upload is by design. Is this behavior the best it can get, architecturally? Or should I just relax, unclench my BOINC-micromanaging nether regions, and let STD and LTD work their magic to make sure that my resource shares are enforced in the long term? I usually leave the network connected, except during business hours (the UL/DL bursts can bork out my IP softphone).

Interesting philosophical dilemma, though. I wonder what this behavior does on modem connections.

Are you getting this problem when you first start up your machine or log it? It's not uncommon, especially on slower machines or systems with lots of things that run at startup to have the BOINC Daemon (which runs the show in the background) not fully started when the BOINC Manager starts up. The Manager starts, doesn't see the background process running, and tosses an error.

Next time this happens, try going up to the File menu, pick Select Computer, and then hit OK. Usually works for me. If that doesn't do it, just type in localhost in the Host Name: box.

Hey Alan. Very interesting. I'm tempted to believe you're right, that the BOINC client is handing more than just a simple "http://....." to the OS. But I know it isn't hard-coded to start IE.

I haven't reviewed that part of the source code either, though, if you get the urge, it's publicly available if you read C++. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/boinc_dev.php

One interesting test you've probably already tried, but didn't mention is this: You said that uninstalling the Google toolbar didn't help, but uninstalling both did. Did you try using the Google without the Norton bar installed?

I'm just covering the bases here. The only thing that I can think of that's left to do is run a full Filemon/Regmon trace to see what's hitting the registry when you hit those buttons. But that's a ton of work... Now that I say that, I probably won't be able to resist the urge, but it may take me a few days to work up enough time to do it. We'll have to play that by ear.

I'm stumped at this point, so hopefully Rom or one of the other devs will wander through the forum and have some insight off the top of their heads about how BOINC submits that data to the OS.

I covered this originally in the SETI & LHC forums--the ability to sort by CPU time or received time instead of just result ID.

I now have the PHP code rewritten to allow sorts on all fields. What should I do with my changes? Who should I submit them to?

remember, it's a correction factor to their estimate

1) Interesting. Didn't realize that the projects were the ones generating the base estimates for their WUs. You learn something new every day. 8)

2) LHC do something on or ahead of the curve? Right. I'll look for that just after -insert name of hot chick- starts pulling my shots at the local caffiene hut.

3) Still, this is an interesting issue. I wonder if any of the mainstream users think about things like that when they're clamoring for features like this. Oh. Yeah. See that last sentence under #2....

Would this also be an issue for protein predictor? It has 2 (or is it 3?) different applications that it can use to process different units (Mfold, charmm, etc) Is the estimate by project or by program?

IMO, it'll be an issue for all projects (that's why I put it here, anyone who's wondering).

Now that you ask, though, I'm looking across accounts on different projects. I thought the info was kept once across all BOINC projects. Now that I'm digging a little deeper, it looks like the data is kept on a per-host basis. Since the host information is kept on a per-project basis, then the time correction factor will be kept on a per-project basis.

All that said, the same problem may exist. If a Mfold unit in 4.45 estimates that it will take you 10 hours, and it takes 1, then you'll get a corresponding "estimate adjustment %". If a Charmm unit takes you 25% of BOINC-estimated time, then you may run into the same kind of problem.

LHC only uses one executable, and I'm not in PPAH, so I can't test. Wouldn't be a bad idea to give it a try and see what happens. Like I said before, it really only amounts to a nuisance that alters the size of one's cache. It doesn't affect how much work you actually do.

Interesting issue. LHC has started tossing out a few monster units that take ~2x normal time to crunch.

Running 4.72, so it uses the time estimate correction code. Net result is that crunching one of these large WUs causes all WUs from that project to have nearly doubled time estimates. Which in turn affects how many WUs the client pulls down for cache.

Not really a problem, per se, but definitely somethig to be aware of if BOINC projects start putting out WUs of different size. You thought people complained about how big their cache was before you added the time correction factor. 8)

You know, there's a link for that on the homepage... Maybe that dev page should have a link to the DL directory. After all, we've already established I'm too dumb for bookmarks, no? 8) No, nevermind. Sorry I brought it up. We don't need to reflog that one... 8P

I'd love to be the volunteer developer. But I promise you don't want to run anything that I write in C++. It just ain't pretty.

PHP, I can do just fine. Then again, maybe it's time I learn. I'm due a few days of vacation.... (shudder)

The GUI guys did a great job making column headers that just beg you to click on them to do sorting.

Yes, its a silly little thing, but if they bothered to code 'em in there, how hard is it to include the abilty to sort by those columns?

Just for those neurotic crunchers out there like me that want our WUs sorted in deadline order (or progress % order, or project order)

Thanks for the time, devs! Keep up the great work!

Interesting article on what a C0000005 errors are. The example that Calvin puts forth is great. If we're seeing these somewhat regularly in CPDN, it may be a buggy bit of code in the science app. That'd be my guess. It could be the OS, but I doubt it, or you'd see it elsewhere. It's not BOINC, or the BOINC Manager and/or Daemon would fail, not the science app.

So why don't you neatly wait for 5.2.0 to be released then? With the entry of the 5.x.y clients, we're following the Linux development rules:

Odd numbers are development versions, Even are release numbers.
Meaning that the whole 5.1.y version is development, the 5.2.y is release numbers.
So while we try to get the bugs out of the 5.1.y versions, this number can go up each day. Or a new release can be coming out twice a day.

Deftly suggesting I get the hell out of the dev tree? 8) I was trying to be a helpful early adopter and test the new functionality. If a requirement to be useful is that I DL a new ver every day/other day, then you've probably lost a helper.

If, as I expect, I can still be useful by using pre-release code and testing it for bugs and odd behaviors in the real world, then I will.

Regardless--even if I find that my life is fulfilled by nothing more than installing new BOINC versions--my part in this thread was started by the fact that it took me way too long to find where to DL the software in the first place.

-shrug- Maybe it ought to be that hard. I think at this point, I'm going to do what I'm going to do. Tom made the request, I seconded it. You disagree, great. Those that control will do something or they won't. But at this point, we're wasting time talking about wasting time, so I'm going to do my best to bow out. Keeping my mouth shut has never been a strong suit, but I'm gonna try. 8)
