Hi HTH,

Thanks very much for your reply. That's good to hear that the new SSDs are more resilient than what I was reading (no idea how old the article was). This computer is a very new model, a tiny form factor case about the size of a book, so the heat might just be a side effect of the model. I'll need to call the manufacturer and see what they say about it. I have 16GB of RAM which is twice what my old machine has, so hopefully there's plenty of room for everything, and I can snooze BOINC if I need to. I do find it helps to specify less than 100% maximum CPU time and memory.

I just bought a new computer that has a SSD instead of HDD. I was just reading somewhere that there is a limitation on read/writes to SSDs and that excessive activity (e.g. file shredding) can shorten the life of the SSD. ...Which made me wonder if BOINC might also be a problem?? :-( I've been running BOINC projects (SETI initially, now World Community Grid) for over 11 years and don't want to stop, but I don't want to wreck my SSD in the process either.

Are there certain settings that are recommended for running on an SSD that will minimize the wear and tear? I've noticed that the machine seems to be running hotter than I expected too (judging by the temperature of the air coming out the rear exhaust), and wondered if BOINC activity might be raising the temperature as well.

(It might also help to add my machine configuration: Windows 10 64-bit, i5-7500T CPU @ 2.70Ghz, 16GB RAM)

Many thanks in advance for any help I can get about both concerns.

Thanks Jord. As I just posted (before I saw your reply), rebooting did seem to correct it. So far so good (knock wood ;-). Mind you, I had just done a Windows update before noticing the problem before, so simply rebooting didn't seem to do the trick. I'm now running 7.2.47, whereas I had been running 7.2.42.

Anyway, I wanted to say thanks and leave the information here in case someone else has the same problem. FWIW I saw some reports (in the WCG forum) of the same problem of BOINC attempting to download 2 .png files, so this is more than just me. Maybe that's the lipcurl issue you mentioned.

Thanks again!

Well, I don't know what caused it to run out a few days ago, but it seems all I needed was to reboot after updating the BOINC software. Running fine now (fingers crossed!).

Thanks again. :-)

I've let BOINC run with World Community Grid (WCG) projects for many years. I check the Manager occasionally to see that everything seems to be working okay and it almost always is. I just checked it today and found that there were NO tasks! None waiting and none running. ??? Usually there is at least one screenful of tasks waiting to be crunched, so this was a shock to say the least. It looks like the last upload was November 7th (it's the 11th now).

I have 2 computers running BOINC - one running Vista that is also crunching WCG projects and it seems to be doing fine, with the expected number of tasks waiting patiently.

The computer with no tasks runs on Windows 7 (with all the updates, except for that infernal Windows 10 upgrade nagware). Both machines run ESET as the anti-virus, so it can't be anything about an update to my antivirus. My firewall is my router, to which both machines are attached.

I'm utterly at a loss to even know what to check to find what the problem is! But I'll try to describe what I'm seeing. Under the Transfers tab, it had said it was trying to download 2 files -- both .png files. ??? I aborted both downloads, then went to the Projects tab, selected World Community Grid (the only project listed, which is as expected) and clicked Update, but it seems it can't connect. It keeps deferring communication.

I tried updating the software too, from 7.2.42 to 7.2.47. The only thing that changed was the icon in the System Tray, which now shows WCG's logo instead of BOINC's.

What the heck happened? Any ideas? And how do I fix this? Many thanks in advance for any help with this. Let me know what information you need to help me diagnose and fix this.

I'll copy the log below, which will show activity since I updated BOINC. Maybe it will shed some light on the problem:

Hi Claggy, thanks for the help. I'll put the startup messages below from when my 'puter was rebooted this morning, up to the point of restarting the various jobs and the one checkpoint that follows them.

FYI: I just came back after being out for a couple of hours (everything was still running) and files are back in memory again, even though they're suspended.

Edited: ...and in the few minutes since I put this post together, those files are suddenly gone from memory!

Hmm... It seemed to be working for a while, but this morning it's back to keeping the files in memory again. I keep my computer running all night, and the log confirms that several checkpoints were done througout the night, the most recent being almost 4 minutes before processing was suspended due to computer activity. (I have the checkpoint set to 60 seconds at the most.)

What's weird is that one of the jobs running (Clean Energy Project) hasn't been checkpointed. It has over 7 hours of processing having elapsed, with over 5 hours to go. It was last running on the 19th, which might have been before I added <checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug> to cc_config.xml. Perhaps I didn't do that correctly?

I just rebooted (for unrelated reasons...as far as I know!) and those files are no longer showing in memory, although that doesn't mean they won't get stuck in memory again at some point. I have no explanation for how/why they got stuck there, apparently last night.

But here's another weird thing: that one job that doesn't seem to want to checkpoint (Clean Energy Project) is now showing as only 36 minutes elapsed and 13 hours remaining. ??? I'm thinking maybe I should just abort that job; maybe it's a source of this problem. Does that sound like a good idea? I don't want to abort it if the majority of it really has been processed and if it's not the source of the problem.

I'm at a loss as to what is going on here. Any other insights? Thank you!

I'm setting the preferences through the menu on the BOINC Manager window (that comes up when I double-click the system tray icon). I imagine that's at the local level, correct? If so, it should take precedence, from what you're saying.

I have my computing preferences in BOINC set so that the box is UNchecked for "Leave applications in memory while suspended," and also unchecked for "Compuing allowed while computer is in use." Nevertheless the WCG (World Community Grid) files remain in memory, to the tune of around 200MB!

I upgraded to the most recent BOINC version a couple of days ago (7.0.28) to be sure it wasn't a bug that had been fixed. I thought it was working okay after that, but now they're back again. Is there something else in the setup that's overriding my preferred settings?

Another thing that's weird is that right now I have 7 files in memory, whereas I believe only 4 should be running at a time (and only 4 are showing as suspended under the Tasks tab).

I'm running this on Vista (Service Pack 2) 32-bit with 4GB RAM. CPU is Intel Core2 Quad. I make sure everything is always upgraded.

Any ideas what could be wrong? I run a lot of programs and 200MG takes a chunk out of the available memory.

Thanks for the help!

Scripting is way over my head, but I've wondered the same thing. I'm fine (most of the time) for BOINC to run in the background using less CPUsage when I'm on the computer, and a higher percentage when I'm not. Is there a wish list of features somewhere that this could be added to?
16) Message boards : Questions and problems : Keep losing automatic startup at reboot
Message 34077
Posted 5 Aug 2010 by Starhugger
Okay, here's what I found. When I shut down BOINC separately and then reboot (with the box checked to start up on login), it *does* start up after it reboots. Then, following a hunch, I rebooted *without* shutting BOINC down first and lo and behold, it started up automatically after reboot! I think what happens is that if you change that setting, it needs to be shut down properly before rebooting; otherwise it doesn't hold the changed setting.

I had been installing some stuff a while back, and I had shut off the automatic startup until after I had all the new installations done. But when I tried to change the setting back, I had only just rebooted (not shut BOINC down first), so it wasn't holding the changed-back setting. However, once the change is "solidified" by shutting down BOINC first with the changed setting, it seems to hold it even if you don't shut down BOINC first on subsequent reboots. (Does that make sense?) It's possible there might be some variations too (like just shutting down BOINC with the changed setting and then restarting BOINC manually without having to reboot).

So the bottom line is: if you're going to change the setting, shut down BOINC separately before your next reboot, or else it won't hold the changed setting.

Thanks Claggy for the tip about this! It wouldn't have occurred to me to check that.

I leave my computer on 24/7 most of the time, to allow BOINC to run, but occasionally need to reboot it. Although I have checked the checkbox in Options to "Run Manager at login" (many times), it keeps losing that setting when I reboot. I've had this problem before, though not for a long time, and I don't remember how it got resolved.

Just in case, I just installed the latest version (6.10.58) and tested it by rebooting, but it's still losing the setting. I'm running this on Windows Vista Home Premium. It's driving me a little nuts because if I don't catch it when I reboot, I wind up leaving my computer on overnight for nothing (since BOINC isn't running).

Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug? Thanks in advance for help with this.

You'll probably be best off asking this over at WCG forums.

It's a question about their science application, not the BOINC software.

But from what I remember of WCG, some of their science apps are very memory intensive. You're probably swapping stuff in and out of RAM like crazy.

Thanks Kathryn. I'll try there. Yes, according to Windows Task Manager this packet takes up around 200MB in memory! I don't remember what the Aids packets took up, but I don't remember seeing numbers like that. Thanks for replying.
