Only 32-bit versions of BOINC working, and 64-bit versions failing, on low power intel CPUs is a known problem, and we know how to work round it.

Hold on while I look up the earlier references.

Noting for future reference: https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues/2470

To decode the rather obscure language in that reference: we found that 64-bit BOINC crashed when it tried to access 'secure' (https) websites. This was due to BOINC being distributed with old versions of some security files.

BUT: that was in 2018. A change was made at the beginning of 2020, and all BOINC versions from v7.16.4 onwards should be shipped with the updated files, and should work properly. If you're having a problem with (one only?) copy of v7.16.11, we may have to look further.

It was working on 3 SIngle Board Computers and 1 day stopped working. They weren't crashing, they just wouldn't communicate over the internet. Would not download new tasks or upload completed tasks. No changes to the network. The only thing I can think of is that Windows 10 did some automatic updates and that might have broken BOINC. Funny thing is that I have the 64bit version of BOINC running on 2 Windows Surface Pros running up to date Windows 10 and there are no issues. They are running now so I am happy. If there is something you would like me to try on one of the ones that wasn't working or information you would like, let me know. I'll be glad to assist in troubleshooting.

Yes, I was speaking about Single Board Computers. These happen to be Intel based from HardKernel- model ODROID-H2. I built 3 of them in a single PicoCluster case (they make a nice kit which includes power supply and network switch) and am running Windows 10 on them.

I finally got them working again by uninstalling the 64bit version of BIONC and installing the 32bit version. Why it suddenly stopped working or why the 32bit version works and not the 64bit version, I have no idea.

Sorry for not responding sooner as I did not receive notifications of prior postings.

Well, it is failing again. After downloading some tasks it now says it cannot access the internet. I am also getting this on another SBC computer. The internet is reachable from these devices as I can access the internet from a browser and even access the URLs that BIONC is trying to access. BOINC tasks as allowed access to the internet from the Windows firewall. Any clue on how to troubleshoot this?

Never mind. I stepped away for a few hours and came back and now I can add projects again. What changed in those few hours to make it work I have no idea.

I have 3 identical (except for memory) SBC systems running Windows 10 and dedicated to running BOINC (V7.16.11 x64). They have been running for well over a year with no issues. Recently the 3 systems updated WIndows 10. Now BOINC on one of them cannot access the internet. The internet is accessible from the computer as I can access the internet with a browser. I can also use a browser to access the URL BOINC is trying to access with no issues. I have uninstalled BOINC and removed all of the data files. I tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions and both won't work. I use Windows firewall and the BOINC tasks are allowed access to the internet. Anyone have any ideas?

Thinking it might have been an upgrade issue I uninstalled BOINC and deleted the data directory. Rebooted. Installed BOINC. Rebooted. Changed password and set allow_remote_gui_rpc. Rebooted. Still no connection.

So I put on my miners hat and started digging deeper. Going back to my original thought of what the issue was I started to check the firewall settings. Even though I previously tried turning off the firewall it still didn't work. So checking the settings BOINC was allowed through the firewall but it was the wrong one. The rule allowed the 32 bit one through and not the 64 bit one (different directory). Once I changed the rule it started working!

Thank you all for all of your assistance.

The only problem with the 7.16.5 64 bit version is the inability to work with low powered cpus like Atom processors or other low powered cpus used in laptops or handhelds. Problem is with the SSL certification on 64 bit devices. Either update the certs package or stick with the 32 bit version of BOINC.

Processor is an Intel Celeron J4105 CPU. How to update the certs package?

Have you tested that with an actual Atom? My testbed Celeron J3455 couldn't run 64-bit v7.14.2, but is running v7.16.5 64-bit version just fine. A fix was applied, and worked in that case.

What fix was applied?

The 7.14.2 version was 32 bit. The 7.16.5 version was 64 bit.

Reinstalled the 32 bit version of 7.14.2 and it is working again. I don't see a 32 bit version of 7.16.5 available for download.

I am running BoincTasks V1.78 and it connects to 5 Windows 10 PCs and 2 Linux NAS devices with no problem. The Windows 10 PCs are running BOINC version 7.14.2. I updated BOINC on one of the Windows 10 PCs to version 7.16.5 and BoincTasks can no longer connect. I tried disabling the firewall on the updated PC and also on the one running BoincTasks. No go. GUI RPC allowed from any host is enabled. Password file is correct. Rebooted both PCs. Still no go.

Anyone else see this? Any ideas?

I have installed the 32bit version of BOINC and it is running but I'd rather be running the 64bit version as 64bit should run a little faster as long as it is optimized for 64bit.
The 32bit version of BOINC can still run 64bit science applications and it's these latter that speed up calculations or not, not the bitness of the BOINC version you have.

I didn't realize that. Good to know!

Thanks

@byron,

The issue is not about BOINC starting. It is about it crashing. The 64bit version crashes in LIBEAY32.dll. This SSL library is not current and needs to be updated to support certain CPUs. The library is version: 1.0.2.7 and the current one is 1.1.1. It was discussed over a year ago about updating the SSL library in BOINC but it looks like it never happened.

From OpenSSL.org: The latest stable version is the 1.1.1 series. This is also our Long Term Support (LTS) version, supported until 11th September 2023. Our previous LTS version (1.0.2 series) will continue to be supported until 31st December 2019 (security fixes only during the last year of support). The 1.1.0 series is currently only receiving security fixes and will go out of support on 11th September 2019. All users of 1.0.2 and 1.1.0 are encouraged to upgrade to 1.1.1 as soon as possible. The 0.9.8, 1.0.0 and 1.0.1 versions are now out of support and should not be used.

I have installed the 32bit version of BOINC and it is running but I'd rather be running the 64bit version as 64bit should run a little faster as long as it is optimized for 64bit.

I hope the developers issue an update soon that includes the latest SSL library.

https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues/2470

You can try this. It looks like it was an older issue.

Do you have also tried an older version of BOINC?

I tried adding <no_info_fetch>1</no_info_fetch> and still won't work. My cpu is Processor: 4 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Celeron(R) J4105 CPU @ 1.50GHz [Family 6 Model 122 Stepping 1]. I'll try installing the 32 bit version.

There are a few other threads on this issue.

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=11870#81545
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=82881#1933142
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=12383#85590

All talk about it being addressed in a future release but that never happened. Any idea when it will be fixed?

Just an FYI. I purchased three Odroid-H2's to just run BOINC. It is a SBC containing an Intel Quad-core processor J4105 (14nm) with 4MiB Cache, up to 2.5Ghz(Single Thread) or 2.3Ghz(Multi Thread). A very nice piece of kit --> https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-h2/.

I'll provide a separate write up once I get it working.

I am still unable to get this to run. I have uninstalled/installed many times. I have even installed it not as a service. I have disabled Windows firewall and UAC while troubleshooting. Still no joy. Still getting the following in the application event log

Faulting application name: boinc.exe, version: 7.14.2.0, time stamp: 0x5bbe9f91

It needs to be installed as a service?

Yes if you want it to start when the computer starts. Otherwise you have to log in for it to start.

Is this 64 bit windows? 32 bit runtime problem?

Yes, it is 64 bit Windows. No projects are attached/enabled yet because I cannot connect to the client.

What about the question on the cc_config.xml file?

I think the problem is that the client keeps failing. Found this in the system application logs

I installed BOINC 7.14.2 on a new install of Windows 10 Pro on an Odroid-H2. I installed as a service using an admin account and also using run as administrator. Windows is up to date with all patches and updates. I changed the password in the cfg file. I am having a few issues.

1 - the manager will not connect to the client. No error messages.
2 - there was no cc_comfig.xml file created. Do I have to create it or is it supposed to be created automatically?
3 - I get messages stating that the client has stopped x number of times in y minutes and would I like to restart.

I have BOINC running on two other Win 10 computers that I installed a few years ago and don’t remember having any install issues.

What am I missing or doing wrong?
