61) Message boards : BOINC client : BAM resets project-specific settings

Many projects have unique settings, such as opting into beta (malaria control) or run time (Rosetta/RALPH). Anytime changes are made to the resource share for a project on BAM, it resets those project-specific settings. And that means one has to remember to back into the project site to fix them. Are the project developers aware of this bug? Is it being fixed?

There's more issues with non-CPU-intensive projects (which I'll call NCI). I think it breaks a bit the concept of the total credit. Users can run multiple nci projects at the same time as normal projects. Users running nci projects get more credits per day than users with the same CPU specs who run only normal projects.

Good point! I can run up to 10 DepSpid WUs per machine, in addition to the 1 normal WU per thread.

Help me understand. Lets say that for team X, person A is the founder at project 1, and person B is the founder at project 2. Then person C goes to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/teams/, and creates team X, with himself as the founder. Will person C then be automatically made the founder at projects 1 and 2?

Edit: Follow-up questions: A new project (3) is created. It is an invitation-only project, allowing only some people to join. Person C is not allowed to join. How is C supposed to manage the team at project 3? What is to prevent some other person at project 3, from initiating transfer, waiting 2 months, and taking over the team?

So we went ahead with this feature anyway, I see.

It may be that having an edit option leads to sloppy posts. If people knew every post was final, we would probably be less impulsive and pay more attention...

I wish we had the option to delete our own posts within the hour if nobody has yet replied.

Amen.

Speaking for myself I really want this feature to succeed. There are a number of projects where I'm not the founder of my team and it remains to be seen if I ever get foundership of these teams.

That's not a tech problem, right? It sounds like a political problem. If the founder is gone, just use the initiate transfer protocol. Or am I missing something?

My team (in the top 30) "founder" was pulled from SETI@home, as far as I can tell. He has only "SETI Classic" credits. I can't find him anywhere in BOINCstats. Now this person will be made the founder for all new projects? And now we have to go through the 2 month waiting period for every new project?

Please delete.

Which? My post(s)? Or did you make a post that you later changed to "please delete"?

Not sure when this happened, but I see we have MAR now. Thanks!

Well nuts. Too bad it doesn't work.

Seti is pretty much the test bed for server code. We only get an upgrade here when we ask for it.

Ah. Let's ask then. =;^)

Difficult to diagnose. Did the other thing work, though?

Nope. Same thing happens. It must be one of those files I copied over that is causing the problem.

At this point, I think I am going to have to just scrap all my WIP, do a fresh install, and fresh attach to all those projects (there were a bunch that aren't on BAM yet).

Thanks for the help.

The actual errors are scrolling off the buffer. How do I crease the buffer size beyond 999?

If it's possible, it's in the properties of the command line window.
But aren't they logged to stderrdae.txt, by chance?

BOINCmgr was logging it in that file, but when running it from the command line, no, nothing was logged. Here is the output when running the mgr:

Still sounds like a firewall problem to me.

Or something that just went wrong with (permissions?) the BOINC directory.
By the way, you can easily recover the work in the old directory. Sorry, I saw the edit a bit late. So if you want to, you can ignore my PM.

But for that you just exit BOINC.
Copy all sub-directories and their files from the old directory to the new one.
Copy over all account_*.xml files.
Copy over client_state.xml

Then restart BOINC in the new directory.

The only firewall I have is the one that came with windows, and it is not turned on.

I'll give this a shot.

I removed abc beta and VTU via BAM. Then:

boinc_cmd is not a recognized command. However, boinccmd is.

boinccmd --acct_mgr_rpc
connect: no error
can't connect to local host

Duh. Have to start the boinc client first. Did that, but then the client quits suddenly too.

The actual errors are scrolling off the buffer. How do I crease the buffer size beyond 999?

I removed abc beta and VTU via BAM. Then:

boinc_cmd is not a recognized command. However, boinccmd is.

boinccmd --acct_mgr_rpc
connect: no error
can't connect to local host

Also, VTU is *gone*. The URL is no longer valid. Could this be causing it?

Yes, I am using BAM.

Does this help? it looks like it is ABC, or whatever BOINC was going to do just after contacting ABC...

Any way to manually remove ABC from the list of attached projects (without starting BOINC), to see if that helps?

To pause/resume tasks hit CTRL-C, to exit hit CTRL-BREAK

Make sure your firewall didn't start blocking TCP port 31416 all of a sudden.
And check if your gui_rpc_auth.cfg file is still available in the BOINC directory, if it still is only around 1KB and just holds the password that came with it, or the password you provided.

Rebooting the machine will also help at times.

Thanks.

I tried turning off the firewall completely.

My gui_rpc_auth.cfg file is unchanged, and 1k.

I have rebooted many times now (the first thing I try with windows boxes).

Any other suggestions?

Edit: I uninstalled BOINC again, renamed the BOINC folder to something else, then reinstalled BOINC. Works like a charm. So now I need to figure out what is wrong with my BOINC folder. I am attached to about 50 projects, and have lots of work from many of them in progress (quad core). Any ideas?

Suddenly, one of my windows XP machines is having a problem with BOINC. When starting BOINC, all the normal startup text shows in the messages tab, showing things like the URLs for all the attached projects. Then a split second later, everything goes blank. The icon in the system tray has the white circle with the red dot in the center, and then I get a pop-up saying "The BOINC manager is not able to connect to the BOINC client. Would you like to try tot connect again?" Clicking on Yes does not do anything, and the message pops up again.

It seems to be working correctly for a split second at start up, and then losing the connection.

I have tried re-running the installer to "repair". I have tried re-running the installer to "remove", and then reinstalling. This is with both 5.10.13, and 5.10.20. No change in results.

Suggestions?
