41) Message boards : The Lounge : Why have so few WCG folks come over to BOINC

Some people prefer KISS over lots of options. Nothing wrong with that.

I think if projects offered UD as an option they might get more CPU cycles donated.

The problem with UD is that it uses only one core/thread per machine. That was fine 5+ years ago. Not it just wastes processing capacity.

There is also a PS3 app for TSP. But it is PPE only.

Good news! The 10.5.2 update helped! My CPU usage was around 80%, not in the high 90%. Still not up to 100% though.

I have the original 8-way intel Mac Pro. Under Tiger, everything ran fine with 5.10.41. All 8 CPUs were at 100%, and nice showed correctly.

Today I did a clean wipe/install of Leopard. Now BOINC tasks show as user, instead of nice. If I read an earlier post in this thread correctly, that is a problem with Activity Monitor and/or MenuMeters. Fine. Annoying, but letting it go for now.

The really troubling problem that I am seeing is total CPU usage. Under Tiger, MenuMeters showed all 8 as 100% pegged, all the time. Now, the individual graphs are all jagged with peaks and valleys, and when I set it to "show average for multiple processors a single display" (similar to the way that windows does it) it is showing only about 80% usage. Top shows about 80% as well.

I just lost 20% of my processing power! Help!

Edit: A snapshot of the Activity Monitor is on my downloads page.

Wait. I thought BOINC could only allow one task per thread. Did MindModeling really find a way to allow a task to use more than one thread inside BOINC? If so, this is great news for MT apps, no? Should someone tell Folding@Home?

Also, what does this mean when a single project task takes over all my threads? Especially to all the other BOINC tasks running?

Give the man a break. ;)

He's on an island that shares a dual 128k, and that's over cellular. It will take about a day to get everything transferred to the new server.

I have had mine crunching 24/7 for about half a year now, with no problems. About cooling, no additional cooling needed. Just don't put it in an enclosed cabinet with the doors shut.

It doesn't however, overcome the fundamental problem of unfair credit allocation, within the same project, affecting the position of the individual within that project.

Hmmm.

Credits within a project are a completely different problem than cross-project credits.

The former, IMO, are completely the responsibility of the project, and far more easily defined. It is a relatively easy problem to solve. Fixed credits, transaction counting, benchmarks/quorum, whatever. The advantage a project has is that they are all running the same app, using the same resources.

The latter is the real problem (IMO), and I think the position comparison may be the solution.

Perhaps cross-project credit parity really is impossible. I really like the idea behind Formula BOINC:

Rather than comparing credits between projects, you compare positions

However, since you never explicitly created the account, it's wrong for the newsletter checkbox to be on by default! I'll point the devs to this thread tomorrow.

True, however, I *do* want to be notified by email when my team & user account is created on a new project.

3. Create BOINC forums using the BOINC forum software, alongside the
existing dev forums. Pro: the devil you know. Con: the developers don't
seem to like using the dev forums, much.

Isn't #3 what we already have here? Why would a second set of forums be needed?

The teams were included in this feature without being asked first whether they wanted to participate or not, the profiles had simply been copied and pasted from one specific project (Seti, why not Einstein or CPDN?) without permission from the team admins.

This is the real problem, IMO. This would have gone much better, if they had

1) Announced the plan for this new functionality in advance, which would then

2) Allow each team to set up their BOINC-wide teams properly, or not at all, depending on each team's decision.

The copying of SETI teams, and implementation without any kind of notification is causing all kinds of garbage team info to get replicated all over the place. And best case, it will take 2 months to stop the replication, and up to another two months to correct all the replicated garbage at all the new projects.

Is it me, or is http://www.boincteams.com/ not available? I get an error "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.boincteams.com."

Works for me.

Notice that by putting a "reply" link or button on each post encourages people to needlessly quote large volumes of text. One way around this is to provide a "post to thread" link which posts without quoting, along with a "reply to *this* post" link.

I thought we were trying to get rid of the generic "post to thread" in order to get to threaded readers.

What is this dubious group about? It's not a proper place for discussions. It's now readable without surrendering your privacy to the "Datenkrake" Google, but it's definitely no proper place for discussions about BOINC.

There is this official forum to talk about such stuff or the dev-list, full stop. Everything else is just BS.

It sure does appear like smoke-filled, back-room decisions are being made. It appears that *some* team founders were invited to join this google group, created by David Anderson, back in July. I assume the list of invited founders was taken from the S@H list of team founders. My team was not invited, probably because my team's S@H founder no longer exists. In any case, that the discussion was hidden, and not here or the mailing list is more than a bit frustrating. Or did I miss an announce about this group somewhere official?

I did find this bit of official documentation:

Half-baked is too kind.

So, on one hand it seems like a fine idea to have the name SETI.Germany kind of copyrighted in new projects from the beginning...

It doesn't even do that. Consider this scenario:

New project, where membership is still invitation only. Team Foo is automatically created, yet no team members from Foo can join at this time. So random person Bar decides to hijack the team by initiating the transfer request.

Oh yeah, and the default founder no longer exists, as is the case for my own team. How he got set up as the default team founder is a mystery to me and my team. I am guessing the default teams were simply copied from SETI, where he is also founder.

But will it be a problem if most people use Reply to this post and almost always quote the post they're replying to? I find that unnecessary quotes really slow down the quick reading and flow of a thread.

The issue with people not trimming the quoted material is a problem for any forum, regardless. It is a problem with the forums we currently use for BOINC today.
