21) Message boards : BOINC client : Xeon Phi (MIC): Will it crunch?
Message 44558 Posted 20 Jun 2012 by zombie67 |
Not really sure where to post this, so I'll try here. Will BOINC be able to use these, assuming the app was written accordingly? http://www.anandtech.com/show/6017/intel-announces-xeon-phi-family-of-coprocessors-mic-goes-retail |

Great! Thanks for looking into this. |

Ivy Bridge includes HD4000 graphics on the chip. It is OpenCL. Will BOINC 7.x recognize that as an OpenCL GPU available for crunching? |

Yes, I would like some clarity on this situation too. I can see that it is broken. But what is not clear to me is if that was intentional, or an unanticipated consequence of changing something else. Also, it is not clear to me if the developers are aware of the problem. Ageless? Do you know? Or should we be taking this up with the development team directly? |

I'm still confused by the various 'answers' to arkayn's original question in this thread. Like him, I too use a resource share of zero to create a backup project that only gets to run if the primary project can't supply. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the backup project concept is (for the time being) collateral damage until something is done to re-engineer it. Hmm. With 0 + 1, boinc will not download any work beyond just enough to keep all the cores and GPUs busy. No additional cache at all. Maybe "0" breaks the new logic somehow. I just changed it to .5 + .5 and it is downloading more work no. A resource share of 0 is not working. It is continuing to download work, even when there is plenty of work from projects with a RS > 0. |

The current test clients practically only listen to the "connect every xx days" for caching. The Additional Buffer does nothing [from the regular user perspective]. Ah, well that explains it. I have my set to connect every zero days + 1 day. |

I am a bit confused. Are you saying that (after downloading a single task), BOINC 7.x will continue to request work from a project with a resource share of zero? At least until it somehow learns not to do so? Regardless of cache size, BOINC should not download work from a zero RS project until it is completely out of work, and there is not other way to prevent idle time. Right? Also, how does one get 7.x to actually d/l enough tasks to fill the cache to the set amount? I can't get any more tasks than just enough to keep the CPUs & GPUs running. |

I am sure this has been suggested, but I'll throw it out anyway. I would like a setting in the manager to choose how many tasks to assign to a GPU, without having to mess with an app_info.xml. Most GPU apps are so inefficient, you have to do this app_info.xml nonsense with almost every GPU project. |

PM their admin. Their server is so old, it's inexcusable. |

There is a pretty good 3 page article on DC in the March 2009 issue of CPU. It includes F@H, S@H, and also talks about BOINC. Lots of quotes from DA and Vijay Pande. January 31, 2008 Also, they are testing beta units, so it you want to participate, you need to enable beta in your prefs. |

FYI, there is an article about BOINC in the October 2008 issue of CPU magazine. Page 96, under the linux "Warm Up To Penguins" section. I would post a link, but they require an account to read the on-line version. |

There is also a (live) SHA project: http://boinc.iaik.tugraz.at/sha1_coll_search/ |

Message 15516 Posted 22 Feb 2008 by zombie67 |
Some people prefer KISS over lots of options. Nothing wrong with that. The problem with UD is that it uses only one core/thread per machine. That was fine 5+ years ago. Not it just wastes processing capacity. |

There is also a PS3 app for TSP. But it is PPE only. |

Message 15414 Posted 14 Feb 2008 by zombie67 |
Good news! The 10.5.2 update helped! My CPU usage was around 80%, not in the high 90%. Still not up to 100% though. |

I have the original 8-way intel Mac Pro. Under Tiger, everything ran fine with 5.10.41. All 8 CPUs were at 100%, and nice showed correctly. Today I did a clean wipe/install of Leopard. Now BOINC tasks show as user, instead of nice. If I read an earlier post in this thread correctly, that is a problem with Activity Monitor and/or MenuMeters. Fine. Annoying, but letting it go for now. The really troubling problem that I am seeing is total CPU usage. Under Tiger, MenuMeters showed all 8 as 100% pegged, all the time. Now, the individual graphs are all jagged with peaks and valleys, and when I set it to "show average for multiple processors a single display" (similar to the way that windows does it) it is showing only about 80% usage. Top shows about 80% as well. I just lost 20% of my processing power! Help! Edit: A snapshot of the Activity Monitor is on my downloads page. |
