Trac ticket #357 was opened 2 years ago for this problem. I've just posted a fix to the BOINC developers mailing list (ticket update has been disabled because of excessive spamming).

In theory you can disable networking for a day by setting the time range to 24:00-00:00 but the advanced preferences dialog gives an invalid format error because the validation only allows for hours up to 23.

You can manually set the network disable pattern you require by saving the following in global_prefs_override.xml in your BOINC data directory:

<global_preferences>
   <net_start_hour>9.000000</net_start_hour>
   <net_end_hour>17.000000</net_end_hour>
   <day_prefs>
      <day_of_week>0</day_of_week>
      <net_start_hour>24.000000</net_start_hour>
      <net_end_hour>0.000000</net_end_hour>
   </day_prefs>
   <day_prefs>
      <day_of_week>6</day_of_week>
      <net_start_hour>24.000000</net_start_hour>
      <net_end_hour>0.000000</net_end_hour>
   </day_prefs>
</global_preferences>

You'll need to click "Advanced - Read local prefs file" (or restart BOINC) to force BOINC to apply the changes.

CPDN Main Project

The new scheduler and database server is now fully functional (at about 10 times the speed of the system it replaced). Work is only available for the HADAM3P application at the moment; work for the other applications is currently being generated to make use of the new mirrored download system and should start appearing soon.

Milo has finally managed to get all of the HADAM3P data he'd stashed away back on to a server where the results website can access it. At some point today he will be taking down uploader1.atm.ox.ac.uk to copy its data off to yet another new server. uploader1 is the destination for one of the HADAM3P result files (_3.zip) and uploading of that file will not be possible while the server is being replaced.

Progress thru Processors seems to have taken off big time. Soon after the new server came on-line it was hit by 4,000 new PtP users, all attempting to download 100MB to run their first task. This sudden network load has effectively become a denial of service attack, making the server all but inaccessible. Carl and Tolu are feverishly working to mirror the downloads to reduce the server's network load. They are hoping that normal service will be resumed within a couple of hours.

Just un-install BOINC and start again.

Also make sure you copy your BOINC data directory to the second drive before reinstalling if you want to carry on with your current set of work.

BBC Climate Change Experiment

The project is being shut down. All models which are still running will be sent a killer trickle next time they send a message to the scheduler and you should not attempt to restore from backup. The scheduler and upload servers will be disabled at the end of this week and you will not be able to return any more trickles or upload files after that happens.

The results which have been returned will be used as part of a submission to the IPCC AR5 (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report). Carl Christensen is working part-time for CPDN on this and is adapting the model to collect some further data for the submission. This will be released on the main CPDN project.

Any BBC CCE users who have yet to sign up for the main project should follow the instructions here

climateapps2 is now back up.

The new climateapps2 server is up and running but is under very heavy load.

Access to the web pages which require database access (including server status, user account pages and the message boards) is very slow and will sometimes time out. If the requested page is displayed it might not have the appearance we're all used to (caused by the content being displayed without the CSS file which controls the layout).

Scheduler requests are being accepted but there might be a delay before credits are updated.

Thanks to everyone for their patience during this outage.

Although climateapps2 is back up it is going to have to be replaced. Its replacement is currently being set up and the scheduler, BOINC message board and account page functions will be disabled until the new server comes online. As the new server is not rack mounted there will have to be a second (more controlled) replacement at some future date.

Milo has run a series of tests to find out what caused the recent server problems. These have revealed a motherboard fault.

The project will be unavailable until the board can be replaced. We are unable to say when the server will return to normal service at this time.

Does the client use a different port? If so, what would it be? I can get it enabled in the firewall.

The standard HTTP and HTTPS destination ports are used (80 and 443). There are a lot of other rules a firewall could be using to block the traffic, but my best guess is a User-Agent whitelist. If it has one make sure "BOINC client" is allowed.

boincview.amanheis.de now has a 302 Moved Temporarily redirection to Sedo's Domain Parking pay-per-click advertising "service". Surely time for it to be removed from the add-ons list.

Milo has updated most of the non-BOINC pages on the CPDN website to use a new system based on the Drupal content management system.

This will make it much easier to keep the site up to date, add new information about experiments, and so on. Inevitably there will be some bugs, broken links etc., but finding and fixing these is Milo's top priority. Please note that the BOINC pages should be unaffected, other than a colour and logo change to match the new pages.

If you discover any problems please post the details on the phpBB forum (separate registration required) here.

Sounds like you're passing through a proxy server which only supports HTTP 1.0.

Try creating a cc_config.xml in your BOINC data directory containing the following:

<cc_config>
    <options>
        <http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
    </options>
</cc_config>

(as in BOINC Client Configuration).

The preferences limit message is generated when any of the 3 disk space preference settings causes no work to be sent. I've seen it most frequently when the free disk space is lower than the leave at least parameter setting.

You should also check the leave at least GB and use at most percentage preferences. The disk space available for BOINC is determined using all 3 preferences and the message generated by the server doesn't indicate which one prevented work from being sent.

What are the ramifications if I add the boinc accounts to the administrators group?

The groups affected by those changes are boinc_users and boinc_admins.

The first one can be ignored unless you've added users to it.

The second one contains the boinc_master user, which is the account boinc.exe runs under. If you add that to the administrators group it's mainly a question of whether you're willing to trust the BOINC core client with the administrator privileges which aren't normally granted to the boinc_admins group (projects will still run at a reduced privilege level). A successful logon (local or remote) using the boinc_master account is extremely unlikely as its password is randomly generated on installation and isn't stored as plain text anywhere.

11/11/2008 8:42:48 AM|climateprediction.net|[error] Process creation failed: A required privilege is not held by the client. (0x522)

I resolved this error a couple weeks back by complete removal and reinstall of BOINC. Today, on my work computer the IT org sent a security update down the wire and now the error has returned.

Any idea which update it was?

Would a BOINC developer PLEASE list what rights the boinc_master and/or boinc_project must have.

Assuming it's a Windows system, Local Security Policy should have the following settings for BOINC users and groups in the User Rights Assignment:

  • Adjust memory quotas for a process - boinc_admins and boinc_projects groups

  • Bypass traverse checking - boinc_admins, boinc_projects and boinc_users groups

  • Create global objects - boinc_admins and boinc_projects groups

  • Debug programs - boinc_admins and boinc_projects groups

  • Deny access to this computer from the network - boinc_project user

  • Log on as a service - boinc_master and boinc_project users

  • Replace a process level token - boinc_admins and boinc_users groups

The problem is the max # of error/total/success tasks.

As set in your graphic the server can generate up to 15 tasks from the workunit, but as soon as 6 have been reported with errors the workunit goes to the 'Too many error results' invalid state. Any unsent tasks will be cancelled and no more tasks will be created. If the quorum hasn't been met credit won't be granted to any successfully completed tasks (even if it seems that the quorum is eventually met by an over-deadline 'No reply' task reporting a successful completion).

The modified setting of 15,15,5 will prevent this from happening (unless the workunit gets to a state when it would have generated a 16th task, in which case it will go to the 'Too many total results' invalid state).
