Sure! I'll add edit these resources into the original post. My mistake for not including them the first time. (Edit: Looks like it's too late for me to edit them into the original post).

The census is supported by The Science Commons Initiative, a registered 501c3 out of Delaware (status pending). Details on the org can be found at the resources below, but basically we want to rebuild the bridge of trust between academia and the public. We are fairly new, but have already put some bounties out for BOINC development. We intend to expand support in the coming months.

Website: https://thesciencecommons.org/
Board Members: https://thesciencecommons.org/aboutus/
Incorporation Status: https://icis.corp.delaware.gov/Ecorp/EntitySearch/NameSearch.aspx (Search for "The Science Commons Initiative Inc" or file number "6804263")

The census will help us fulfill our mission as detailed on our site.

Regarding BOINC adoption, it's impossible to grow something if you don't know what you're growing. Understanding the make-up of BOINC users will help us understand different people we should be reaching out to to help grow the user-base. For example, understanding the "why" and "how" of the current user-base will help inform our messaging when reaching out to new users.

Fill out the census if you wish. Don't if you don't wish. Or, if you want, come help us help BOINC and distributed computing, science communication/education, and other technological developments as well = ).

This is a project supported by The Science Commons Initiative (The SCI) to improve the ongoing development, marketing and growth of BOINC and its use around the world.

This poll only aims to collect general, anonymous information about you and how you use BOINC. We do not collect email addresses or contact information and only collect very broad demographic information in this survey.

This is not the first BOINC-wide poll that has been conducted, the last poll was in 2006, but this one is the first one that will be regular and ongoing.

The results of the survey will be published publicly for anyone to view after the census is complete. All results will be anonymous.

We encourage you to share this survey with anyone that you know that uses BOINC and to only submit one response to this form.

Thank you for supporting BOINC!

We have over 450 responses to the census so far! The census will remain open until December 31st.

Wow. Okay. I posted this question on several forums and have admittedly received a lot more response than I expected. There’s no way I can reply to everything so I’m just going to absorb and reply in general.

I’m providing the links to all the threads (ordered from most responses to least). I would highly recommend reading them. There are very insightful responses that approach the question from several different perspectives. I have no doubt that they will help anyone looking to spread the Word of BOINC. I plan on integrating a lot of the ideas into my personal elevator pitch.

My own answer to the question was lightly touched on by Mod.Sense over on the Rosetta@home forums when they said:

“BOINC is also the client which makes it easy for participants to connect to projects…”

Lumendan from the Gridcoin community on steemit also shared something that resonates with what I’ve been thinking:

“There is a network of people who contribute to research by volunteering some of their PC's spare computing power to solve massively difficult problems. BOINC is the backbone of that network, it's the system that links research projects with volunteers.”

To elaborate:

BOINC is the middleware software, but it feels like there’s more... particularly after having experienced the BOINC workshop... after sitting in a room (or walking along a lake) and discussing the worlds of BOINC and science with only a few dozen of the engineers, scientists, researchers, professors, contributors, builders, leaders, crunchers, thinkers, tinkerers, students, publishers, enthusiasts,... whatever, involved with BOINC...

it feels like there’s more to BOINC than the code that handles the data.

It feels like there’s more in that when I explain BOINC to my friends we never end up discussing the software or how it works. And when I force them to start crunching and we start talking about BOINC again, we almost never talk about a feature or a coming update. And when an update is released my friends really don’t care.

But when DHEP was spun up… or when DHEP was spun down… or as BlackHoles@home gets closer to release or when WCG teases new climate change projects… or when they realize that IBM runs WCG, or that DHEP was hosted out of the University of Sussex… or that LHC runs data with BOINC… or that some projects are hosted on laptops in closets by people just like them…

What I’m getting at, I suppose, is that these folks really couldn’t care less about the tech behind BOINC, supercomputers, or even science and research in general. Their interest seems to focus on the human network behind BOINC and the potential to become part of that network.

First they seem to think:

Here’s this human network established by and around a program that seeks to better humanity through the advancement of science, understanding, and knowledge.

Then they seem to think:

Here’s this program developed, maintained, and utilized by this human network that lets me immediately participate, contribute, and interact with scientists, entities, and other like-minded individuals by completing real world scientific and data-analytic tasks.

So what is BOINC? Well. What is the internet, what is Linux, what is Bitcoin?

Maybe BOINC is a human network anchored by a grid computing technology that enables seamless and immediate participation in and contribution to that network.

One thing I’ve learned for certain over my years interacting with the BOINC community is that BOINC feels like far more than just some software.

So, I was recently talking to a family member about having attended the BOINC workshop in Chicago. Right off the bat they asked the big questions: BOINC? BOINC what? What’s a BOINC?

I answered as best I could, but ultimately I realized that “it’s a middleware system that networks everyone’s computers together to form a supercomputer that anyone can use. SETI uses it.” was seriously insufficient, particularly when it came to keeping the attention of this science loving technically illiterate individual -- let alone driving their desire to learn more or participate.

I’ve spent some time thinking about it and I have a few different answers now, but even they feel limited. I’ll share a few ideas if the discussion gets going.

So yeah, I'm curious what everyone else thinks:

14) Message boards : The Lounge : Help Gridcoin Test The Team Requirement Removal (Message 92394)
Posted 6 Aug 2019 by jringo
Post:
BOINC Teams,

I come to you with a request for help from the Gridcoin community. I am posting this on a select number of project forums because I would like to reach the most number of teams without spamming across all the projects. If you find this inappropriate, please delete the post and accept my apologies.

For the past year or so, a core group of Gridcoin developers has been working to implement the updates required to remove the Gridcoin team requirement. They are now ready to begin the actual roll-out of the removal, but would first like help testing the functionality and scaling capabilities of the mechanism; They would like the mechanism tested by more people than the dev team and current testers can provide.

There are two planned phases of testing before the team requirement is removed completely. The first phase tests the update on the Gridcoin testnet. The second phase tests the update on the Gridcoin mainnet.

Once the team requirement is completely removed any person contributing processing power to a BOINC project on the Gridcoin whitelist will have the option to earn GRC without leaving their current team.

Phase 1 - Testnet; Functionality

Phase 1 of testing intends to confirm the functionality of the team requirement removal update.

The Gridcoin testnet is a blockchain used to test new features and updates. The cryptocurrency minted by this blockchain has no real-world value. The goal of the testnet is to catch bugs before an update is released onto the mainnet where real-world transaction and currency distribution takes place.

Anyone that wants to help test the team requirement removal on testnet is welcome.

We are specifically looking for people on teams other than the Gridcoin team.

Anyone that wants to help will be joined by several Gridcoin developers who have left the Gridcoin team specifically to test this update. They will walk you through the setup process for testnet. You will be asked to keep your wallet running for a few weeks while the developers monitor the network for any errors or bugs. If a problem comes up you might be asked to download a hotfix or to change a setting. The process for anyone interested in helping with phase 1 testing is fairly straightforward:

- Join the Gridcoin slack server
https://join.slack.com/t/teamgridcoin/shared_invite/enQtMjk2NTI4MzAwMzg0LTUzMmY0YjdiNzYxYzQ0MDc3MGE1NjQ3Nzg2NWMzZTUzMjAwZjdhMWI1YWUzMDE4YzQyZjVjMjMzOTc1M2RmMmM

- Join the #testnet channel in the slack server

- Tag or PM Barton26 (testnet coordinator), or mention in the chat that you are there to help with testing the team requirement removal

Follow instructions given to you. These instructions will include how to:

- Download and setup the testnet wallet
- Register a testnet beacon (the way the blockchain monitors computation contributions)
- Receive testnet GRC (Monopoly money used for testing updates)
- Build magnitude (crunch whitelisted BOINC projects)
- Stake a block on testnet (leave the wallet running)

Phase 1 testing is expected to take 4-6 weeks, though as I’m sure everyone knows, the actual testing schedule depends on the results of the testing.

Phase 2 - Mainnet; Scaling

Phase 2 testing intends to confirm the scaling capabilities of the team requirement removal update.

The Gridcoin mainnet is the main Gridcoin blockchain. The GRC produced by mainnet is controlled entirely by an open-source protocol-based economic system. It can be exchanged for other currencies or used to purchase goods and services.

For phase 2 testing we are looking for 20 teams that would like to volunteer to enable their crunchers to receive GRC for their computation contributions. GRC rewards will be enabled for these teams in four batches of five teams. This will let us slowly test the scaling capabilities of the update.

After all 20 teams are enabled and if everything is running smoothly the team requirement will be completely removed. Once the team requirement is removed, any person contributing computation to a whitelisted BOINC project, regardless of their team, will have the option to earn GRC for their work.

We are using a phased roll-out out of an abundance of caution with regards to testing the team requirement removal. Remember: every cruncher will have access to GRC rewards at the end of this process, regardless of their team. We do not recommend switching teams if your team does not want to be involved in phase 2 testing. The benefit for doing so will be negligible.

To be one of the teams that helps with phase 2 testing of the Gridcoin team requirement removal:

- Discuss it among your team
- Have your team leader contact myself or Jim (Gridcoin core developer and very long standing BOINCer -- https://www.boincstats.com/stats/-1/user/detail/13042401404/overview)

Hello!

We have been hard at work defining who we are and how we operate over at Gridcoin. A main product from these conversations is the Gridcoin whitepaper. We have finalized the initial content and are currently working on formatting and visuals. Afterwards, we will begin the process of adding select details from the bluepaper which is currently under development, along with additional sections describing other functions of the Gridcoin network as they become a reality.

Before we begin the process of seeking approval from the general user-base of Gridcoin, we want to present the paper to BOINC users. We look forward to hearing your feedback, particularly regarding the section on BOINC.

If there are sections you think could be expressed more clearly, please let us know. Also, if you want to get involved or have any ideas on how we can use blockchain technology to improve the world of science and data analysis, we're all ears!

I have copied the Mission, Overview, and section defining IPP from the paper into this thread. You can find a link to a google doc that contains the entirety of the paper at the end of this thread.

Mission
Gridcoin seeks to develop a blockchain-based distributed computing network powered by the idle processing potential of existing hardware. Access to this network is free for those with data to process, while participants of the network are incentivized with cryptocurrency minted by the Gridcoin protocol.

Overview
Gridcoin is an open-source blockchain that mints and distributes cryptocurrency in relation to the processing power a network participant directs toward data driven analysis and scientific discovery (sections 3 and 4). Currently, the Gridcoin blockchain (section 5) is secured through a proof-of-stake protocol and monitors processing contributions to the distributed computing infrastructure, BOINC. BOINC, the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, hosts major institutional computing projects such as IBM’s World Community Grid, SETI, and data from the Large Hadron Collider, alongside projects developed by students, enthusiasts, mathematicians, researchers, and citizen scientists.

Idle Processing Potential
Gridcoin defines Idle Processing Potential (IPP) as the processing power of a computing device multiplied by the proportion of unused processing over time. Every phone, every computer, every gaming system, every car, refrigerator, toy and object that houses a processor is potentially part of this network. IPP represents an enormous resource which will continue to grow as processors and embedded devices become an increasingly pervasive part of modern life. Gridcoin seeks to tap into this significant potential by encouraging the contribution of existing IPP to approved distributed computing platforms.
