Jim K's suggestion worked.

After some experimenting, I found that the file generated by "echo > gui_rpc_auth.cfg" also works. It has a single new-line character.

I reinstalled boinc-5.2.14 and tried to start the Boinc Manager without filling in the hostname and password fields.

This didn't work. The Manager still demands a password. The gui_rpc_auth.cfg password works but I have to type it in.

The Manager tells me that I have entered an incorrect password before it gives me a chance to enter a password. If this software is supposed to be remembering the password, it isn't doing it.

I recently upgraded to boinc-5.2.14 using the Gentoo Linux distribution. When I tried to start the Boinc Manager, it asked for a password. (This password allows the Boinc Manager on my computer (i.e., boinc_gui) to connect to the boinc_client running on my computer. It does not affect the link between my computer and the Berkeley boinc servers.) Apparently, this feature has been added to prevent "evil" people who have access to one's computer from disrupting the boinc process (seti@home in my case). However, no one has access to my computer other than me. For me, this password feature is not a benefit but a burden. Previously, I could start the Boinc Manager with one mouse click. Now I have to click a mouse, enter the host name ("localhost"), enter the password (possibly after looking up the password), and then click OK. This is bad.

The Boinc gui_rpc.php page indicated that the password requirement could be bypassed by deleting the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file from my computer. I tried this. It didn't work. The boinc software created a new gui_rpc_auth.cfg file with a new password.

I went back to boinc-4.72.
